Craigslist fishing for business

Because I"m posting for a friends local business on Cragislist I'm seeing all the crap that goes on with this popular site.

It may be nothing new to you, but to me its a little education. Now that I've posted some ads for my friend in Home Services... I am getting an email almost everyday with the simple text " Are you still looking for a job? " I'm sure if I reply I'll be on some autoresponder.

Unfortunately everyone doing legit business has to deal with these spammy crappy methods of selling whatever it is they are promoting.

  • According to Microsoft 97.1% of all email spent is SPAM. If people would stop responding to bogus offers it would end. But as long as there is even a 1 in 1000 chance that some idiot will "bite" the spam will continue.

Most the scams involve sending a check with some story then asking the sucker to send a part of the check back to them via Western Union. And you would think that Western Union would care about being used for scam purposes, but they clearly do not.

      Interesting statistic.

The problem with not responding is that legitimate folks who email provide an unsubscribe link. So on the one hand, folks are encouraged to click on the unsub to get off a list...but on the other, if you do that on a spam email, you're most likely just confirming it's an active email address and then the address gets blasted.

It's tough for the less-than-spam-savvy user to figure out who the good guys are sometimes.

    Hi Scott,

Unfortunately you are 100% correct. I have a part-time service biz (offline) and posted an ad on CL. Now I get phone calls & text messages & spam. I'm just glad I used my cell phone and not my home #. Thank goodness for caller id.

I assumed it was just somebody looking to send you
a link to a CPA offer for some work-at-home thing,
not a scam really, but certainly fishing,

I don't know why the email companies even bother with a spam folder. I keep putting the same emails in my spam folders and yet they keep sending them to my inbox.
