Internet Marketing Career

I'm not 100% sure if this is the correct place to post so sorry in advance.
I have been wondering if internet marketing is a good job to have as a career? How many people on here make a high solid living based on internet marketing? Is anyone making 100K plus a year?
I'm currently studying my diploma in business and have just finished my IV in multimedia at aged 17 even though I have these qualification I'm not sure if any of that is what I would like to do but on the other hand internet marketing seems so interesting and vast that's something I would love to do, I remember when I first bought a website off of eBay for 0.99 cents and flipped it for $200 Including the domain name on Flippa was the best day ever for me.

Would anyone recommenced internet marketing as a career choice or should I stick to business (private equity or finance)

Thank everyone who replies, great day/night

You can certainly take Internet marketing as a career and business.
I have just posted about my resignation from my full time day job on this forum because I want to focus more on online business. I started IM 2 and a half years ago and it has helped me a lot that I left my full time work for it.

What has been the most successful internet marketing method you have tried, by this I mean; affiliate marketing, starting your own eCommerce store, flipping websites etc

Internet marketing is an entrepreneurial venture. There is no safety net.

Deciding between a J.O.B. or a business is really the decision between faith in yourself or faith in your boss.

A true entrepreneur is willing to lose it all every morning they go to work. It's an adventure that involves huge risks and huge rewards.

Building a business online is just that - a business.

It takes time, dedication, reading the landscape and the ability to change what you are doing on a dime. A business means you are responsible 24 hours a day.

Succeeding in business (online or off) means you must be willing to do whatever it takes.

You have to continuously educate, apply what you learn, and adapt.

Putting yourself in a corporate box where another makes your decisions for you or takes credit for yours in trade for a paycheque still won't guarantee you safety. You can never be guaranteed an income.

When a person asks me if they should get a J.O.B or do what it takes to make a living online - I believe they are really asking me if they will be "safe".

No - you will not be safe.

But you can be guaranteed that you will never get the RUSH you felt when you flipped that website.

Different things work for different people. Some might have a better "knack" for affiliate programs...others might be better at leveraging PPC and SEO (pay per click and search engine optimization).

Much of making a career out of the IM industry (which I've done for 15+ years now!) means finding what you're good at, and really letting yourself shine. I happen to be really good at writing and designing, so those areas are where I spend the bulk of my time.

Think about what you're good at. Do you have the analytical skills to look at keywords and bids all day and leverage traffic? Or are you more creative and can you build and launch websites rather quickly? These are the things to ask yourself when creating a career in IM. It's not just "internet marketing", it's a very detailed sub-set of things that you can specialize in.

    Hope this helps!

If you are OK with working for someone else, then you should not even consider an internet business.

Plus, the best education out there is in the real world. What you learn in school may not even help you if you want to succeed online with your own business.

Setbacks and challenges is the best school when it comes to internet marketing. You learn every day something new.

$100K a year is certainly possible online and many have reached that level and beyond, including many WF members.

Personally, I can't think of any easier opportunity other than the Internet, that affords the average person the ability to either earn extra income or start his or her own business from home without having a huge barrier to entry.

Now, with that being said, don't quit your day job to go full time till you are steadily making a monthly income that is at least 1.5 to 2X the amount you need to live on. You will need that extra income as a buffer as well as to grow your business further.

Yes this is a good point.

People seem to believe that if their monthly expenses are $2000 that's what they need to come up with. But you will sink and die if this is what you do.

Your business costs money to operate. Even an online business. Hosting. Autoresponder. Advertising. Some friendly soul hacks into your site to "educate" you about security, and you have to get that fixed. You want another tool to make your business easier. All these things and a lot more cost money.

        And then there are taxes.

And oh, you wanted to make a profit??

You need at least double your expenses for your monthly revenue target, or you won't survive. It's just not sustainable. If all you do is try to break even every month, you will sink because of the unexpected expenses.

Nobody should head out there and "see how it goes." Have a set target for money and figure out how you're going to get there.

You are too young and impressionable to be taking career advice from random people on a forum that may or may not be who they say they are. Email some people that you know are successful in whatever it is that you find interesting and ask them some questions.

This forum is very anti-employment, which is a shame. Many people here would benefit greatly by getting hired by a marketing agency or tech startup to learn how things really work rather than being delusional thinking they can spam YouTube videos with "Earn $99,999 in 5 days!"

Of course you can, but you shouldn't pursue it unless you want to be a business owner. Ultimately, you will become a business owner or just go find some other industry related position.

  • I agree with the comments above. Internet marketing business takes a lot of risks and if you are not prepared for it then might as well settle at regular job outside.

I have seen and talked with a lot of starting entrepreneurs in this field and most of them really find IM very frustrating simply because they are not as patient, as open-minded, and as risk-taker as those who have become successful in the industry.

Also, when it comes to starting with IM, you need to be prepared for the worst. You can lose a lot of time, money, and effort by finding the perfect business platform for you out there but with patience and set of mind- you can be a successful internet marketer.

    Good luck!
