Whats the blog etiquette in this situation

lets say my blog is

Living in London dot come

I have a page about clubs and someone comments saying "this is a great article, thanks for sharing" and then adds his link to his name bestlondonclubs dot come

not accept or remove his URL from his name? Its not a direct competitor, but close enough that they could take my viewers off my site.

      I do.

I delete the URL and flesh out the comment so it doesn't look like spam. I reply too, nice bit of social interaction.

Pisses the spammer of too if it's a human, if it's a bot, thanks very much.

That's actually a pretty interesting idea, never really thought about it. If you're willing to spend a couple of minutes for each of this, then it could work out in your favor

I remember someone here mentioning it some time ago. I can't claim any credit for it.

I don't really do it on established sites that have interaction but I find any new sites always get hit with spam before a genuine visitor, I just find in those times (or quiet times on established sites) it's beneficial to get some interaction going, even if it's not real. When humans arrive they'll see a site with plenty of conversation.

In the past I've even made the comments slightly negative then engaged in a conversation so I win them round.

Kind of like talking to yourself really!

It is your blog , you decide what to do with it. But comment moderation I think is a must. with a bit of practical thinking you can always turn things into your advantage by commenting back (if it is a person doing the bad commenting and redirecting your crowd).

Those usually get filtered out by my spam filter so I never see them. If I do, they go straight to the spam folder.

But maybe I'll start replacing their link with an affiliate link of my own. :-)

Those kinds of comments are 100% spam. I would reconsider though if the comment is really helpful like if the author provided more feedback or insight about my blog entry. With regards to links within the comment, I would only consider links within the comment if the link is relevant to my blog post.
