You don't need a website...but...

There's a ton of products, strategies and plans that tell you that you don't need a website to make them work. And this may be true. However, having at least one good looking website with quality content will get you much further in your IM career.

If you don't have your own site, you are severly limited in the affiliate programs you can apply to. Most require a site when you apply.

You can't take advantage of many of the great Wordpress plugins without your own site. You can't add cookies, so you won't be able to "remarket/retarget". And there's many other resources you won't be able to use, putting yourself at a disadvantage, if being new to IM wasn't enough.

Some resources, such as Youtube, may restrict your ability to directly link to affiliate programs. Youtube also lets you "associate" your own site, which means you can link directly to your site in the video itself. This is a powerful technique and is one you can't use if you don't have your own site.

If you're just starting out in IM, one of your first goals should be to get a domain name, hosting and make a good looking site. I suggest a "generic tips" type site and domain name that you can use in a variety of ways.

Here's some generic suggestions for a website:
BlueGuyLifeHacks.com
Essentials247.com
BestTipsTricksToo.com

These types of domain names will allow you to promote just about anything and everything.

Get a good looking web or WP template, add 20 pages of GOOD content and you'll have a site with a wide variety of uses.

You may hear advice that you don't need a website. But having a website gives you so much more opportunity, you likely really do need a website. If you are truly in IM for the long haul, it's one of the best investments in time and money you can make.

Totally agree with you Kurt, having your own website is a must in my opinion. Your domain name could also be your actual name if it's not already taken aswell.

Your own site also makes you look more professional and ads to your reputation as a marketer.

Honestly, whoever doesn't have a website isn't actually in business IMO.

Why wouldn't someone not want a website? It's required by a ton of marketing and affiliate networks, allows you more freedom to sell your products and services, is an investment for the future, so on and so forth.

I have been wondering about this as well, I am from the school of always building a website, but what about linking straight to the affiliate link on a PPC campaign, I've been wondering if there are people doing it. Ive also seen people purchasing domain names for redirection purposes only, I guess its a better option for analytics. However I have always hosted my site and built website to market products, what do you guys think about it?

If you have a good domain, are promoting a product with a great sales page, and know how to rank a domain and bring targeted traffic, redirection works well.

The fewer bounces between interest and sales increases conversions.

I couldn't do IM without my own site. Never been big on affiliate marketing as my main source of income. Run out of products then this would be a great option though.

I absolutely agree that a website is essential.

But I have also noticed two trends about websites when it comes to those just getting started.

One is the belief that building a website requires incredible technical skill; consequently, many people never even start down that path.

The other is the belief that once you build a website, money starts to magically appear; when the realization that that is just the first step sinks in, many people get frustrated and quit.

I guess what I'm saying is that it seems to me many people want some kind of success early on to keep going. And that can happen without a website, at least in the short term.

In the long run, though, there is no doubt that a website is going to have to be put in place.
