You're doing just fine. 10% is about average in my experience.

Somebody will come in here and brag about getting higher,
even much higher - but 10% is pretty decent in my opinion.

I agree with Loren - 10% seems to be about the average rate.

    10% is a good average.

Many list addresses are "throw away mailboxes" on the big free email providers which the owner never reads.

Always treat your email subject line like an AdWords subject line - give them a reason to read your email.

How are you measuring your rates? Unless image loading is available in your reader's mail/webmail client you're not getting an accurate picture. It is possible that your open rates might actually be higher.

I agree, 10% is about average. The subject line of the email has to raise interest and not reveal too much.

We average 12%. What's even more important is your click through after opening. You want that number to be high.

With Aweber my average is 15% with the high at 36% but I use Mass Control aspects with most mailings...Without MC it's usually about 6% to 10% CTR.

    Hi,

I have always had a good relationship with the majority of my list due to how it was built.

My lowest open rate so far is 16.2% with highest being 86.3% using Aweber.

I actually aim to improve this as I just got some advice from someone on my subject lines that should see a big jump in opens...

My open rate is averaging about 20%. It may be more because this is only an estimate as not everyone will click on the "display images" in the message. So the html code will not be recorded to give a precise open rate.

Yes, mine is about 10% and this was a total surprise to me...I thought that once people double opted in they would at least read the emails!

If you sell to 10% of the 10% who open...man do you need a huge list to make money!

    • For my "non IM" lists in Aweber my average
      open rates are:

      LEADS lists - from 10% to 15%
      BUYERS lists - from 25% to 35%

      Now here's an hilarious fact...

      ------------------------------------------------
Open rates of 121.6%? How is that Aweber?
      -------------------------------------------------

Now my favorite list is the one with 190 people
I run from my university Friends. The open rates
I get have an average of about... 60%-80%!!!

And when the topic is really HOT I can see
"hilarious" open rates of as high as 121.6%.
      Here's the hilarious proof:

      http://www.fredericovilaverde.com/wa...open-rates.png

This happens because Aweber does NOT record
"unique opens"... but rather "RAW open rates"
      (as you may know!).

Also, the email subject lines above are in
Portuguese. What's fun to note is this...

The email with the open rate of 121.6%
says "more less" this in the headline:

      [Pictures]: {!firstname_fix}, our THANK YOU!

Now, does this headline sound "75% familiar"
      to you?

      ---------------------------------
      Why such HIGH open rates?
      ---------------------------------

I guess that has to do with the TOP reasons
on why ordinary people read emails online...
or the "email mindset" so to speak.

In fact, this is how "average people" have their
email priorities listed (and I am not talking about
      IM marketers):

Email Mindset #1: Relationship stuff (check pictures from friends, vacations and jokes!)
Email Mindset #2: Communicate with FRIENDS (reply to a friends's email)
Email Mindset #3: I wonder what's up with [insert topic] (NEWS getting mood)
Email Mindset #4: "Let's be productive" ("WORK" mood)
Email Mindset #5: Offers (What we would LOVE to be a TOP priority... "BUY stuff"!)

      ----------------------------------------------
      * This list above specifically is based on Frank Kern's
stuff I've read in the past on his blog a few years ago.
I did not create this list myself.
      ----------------------------------------------

Yet, what I would like to point is this...

I've never seen people actually testing this stuff
with their "friends" or college/university people.

I know it is kind a "crazy" to test this stuff
with your friends or college/university people
      ... or apparently weird!

The fact is I've learned more about setting,
      developing and nurturing relationships when
dealing with these lists... than when actually
going out into niches where you know nothing
and having to establish a connection to make
it or brake it from a sales point of view.

      --------------------------------------------------
What does this have to do with business online?
      --------------------------------------------------

      Honestly, I think everything...

On my personal tests, I've come to realise that
such kind of open rates can only be achieved
based on a solid BOND and TRUST with
the people you have on your list.

      Which means that...

      a) "Friends"
      b) And business

      Have 3 factors in common:

      a) Principle of Liking
      b) Principle of Bond
      c) Principle of Trust

... It's all about developing and nurturing relationships.

      --------------------------------------------------
      Moving the 2 Other Lines
      --------------------------------------------------

      I now usually say this...

We are not just moving the "FREE line".
We are also moving 2 other lines.

      1) The "FREE" line (list of LEADS)
      2) The "FANS" line (list of Buyers)
      3) The "FRIENDS" line (list of friends)

As you can see... the third line is entirely
optional and NOT a requisite to "make money"
      per se online.

What it does mean to me is... that we are
always faded away from the TRUE meaning
      of email. Which is this...

      - To develop and foster RELATIONSHIPS!

      Just a few thoughts.

And some hilarious stats from my own experience
      for you guys to consider.

      Regards,

      Frederico Vila Verde

Here's my recent Aweber Broadcast Percentages report for one of my main lists:

The higher percentages usually mentioned something directly related to the exact reason they signed up to this particular list.

The 35.23% rate is a subject line I use once or twice a year with all my lists, always gets a good open rate.
