Affiliate products vs. own product

Dear fellow warriors,

Some time ago I posted a thread on making USD 50 a day and how I was going to achieve it. In the meantime I read 3 excellent books on IM and I am now in the process of researching the keywords (in Wordtracker) that I will be targeting with my site. I also changed my target into something more realistic and definite. It is: "To make at least USD 25 per day with this site, ultimately by December 31 2009" . It gives met about 6,5 months to work on this project and do it right the first time.

I want to focus on making a decent information product (with good content) that gives a high ROI for my customers. I want to sell it through PayPal. You see I'm actually not interested in promoting other people's stuff at the moment. I believe I could be making more money with my own targeted information product.

What's your opinion ont his??

I think you are on the right track. There is no right answer here. It all goes back to business basics of weighing risk and rewards...

Affiliates take less risks in promoting proven products, but are limited in various aspects of the sales process. Affiliates are entrepreneurs, no doubt, but are riding a wave catching the pieces of the wealth.

Product creators, on the other hand, are taking slightly higher risks. You have to create a product that can sell. Even after that, you still have to sell it, create channels, and do all the stuff an affiliate would do, plus find other affiliates to promote your product. This is the hat of a true entrepreneur, it is yours to win or lose, but to those who succeed - great wealth can be had.

Either way, take action! All it is is a decision and you have already made that decision - go for it and keep us posted!

  • What can you bring to the table that a thousand other guys/girls have not already? Figure that out. What can you do that your competition isn't already doing? Then figure out who your target customer is and how you can solve their problems with your offer better than anyone else. Then it just might work. The most important part of Marketing is finding your market and then getting them in front of your offer. But that doesn't make you money that just gives you a chance. It's the Sales/Conversion process that makes the money. But you need to do everything in order.

Who would you trust more... A Doctor you pick out of the phone book or the Doctor that was recommended to you buy a close friend? How is your offer going to convince people to buy?

At some point you'll need to establish trust in your offer or people won't buy.

It's noble to sell your own stuff... and ultimately perhaps more profitable. But you can learn a whole lot about the process by working on Affiliate Products first.

    Good luck.

Offering your own products is the right way forward in every respect.

You control the product. It is your own asset. Affiliates sell it for you. You write the sales letter. No intermediate landing page dilution. Worth much more as a business - well affiliate sites are not worth anything to speak of.

    And so on.

I know people say that you can learn from affiliate marketing, but the methods are no different to promoting your own products, so why not jump straight in?

Also if you are using PPC, you get 100% of the profit on your own product but only 50% at best of someone else's, and then you have to send them to a landing page where you lose most of the visitors.

I could say more, but instead I will say - just do it.

Having a plan increases your chances of success. It sounds like you have one, but I would suggest you become a little more ambitious about it.

Are you writing about a topic you are actually an expert on, or is it one of these "me too" products? This is something you should consider.

I always recommend to my readers that they write about things they are actually interested in, passionate about, and have some knowledge on. Although I know there are some out there who can write about anything (thing Tim Gorman), most don't have the confidence. Besides, if you don't care about what you are writing about, it shows.

Good luck. Creating a new product is always an awesome journey.

    Thanks guys!

"You control the product. It is your own asset." -- that's what I was thinking too.
"Are you writing about a topic you are actually an expert on" -- In fact I am, I used to run a "real world" commission agency where I would introduce new customers to the seller a % of the total sales price.

Since I know a lot about this product and since I have a passion for writing, I think an e-Book is the way to go. You are right that writing about something you don't care about shows immediately. That's what I want to avoid and that's why I chose a topic in which I'm an "expert" .
