I have use exit pop-ups both on my squeeze pages and my blogs and the bottom line is that... IT WORKS!
It might be annoying but in the end of the day you want more and not less conversions, right?
Some people might disagree but this is just what I do...
    Cheers

You should track whether it will improve your conversion rate 9either lead or sales), if yes, then go ahead and use it.

An exit popup will increase your conversions, period...

Why would you throw away 5-20% of your leads / sales?

Just use it in a smart way so it doesn't annoy people but actually provide value, here's an example:

    - If you're building a list, use an exit popup to redirect people to another squeeze page, but offer something else which is related to your main free offer. For instance if your main free offer is how to make money, make your free offer on the second squeeze page about how to get targeted traffic. If you present people with 2 options chnaces are high they will be interested in atleast 1 free offer, hence increasing your conversions.
    - If you're selling a product, use a downsell to increase your conversions. Let's say the main offer is $27, use an exit popup to offer a $1 trial. People who were on the verge of buying will get that extra push to hit that buy button.

Hope this gives you a better idea
    Jens

If you're selling a product, go ahead and put one up. The main point is to sell and make money.

An exit popup is for when the sale is most likely lost, chances are they won't be coming back soon, so why not throw the net and see if anything gets caught

Most visitors leave a website without buying or subscribing even when they like the content.

    Why?

There are 2 main reasons (from my experience):

    1. they have a short attention span

    2. there is no clear call-to-action on most pages

Therefore I am using exit popus.

    How is that not annoying?

In the past I ran a split test to see how popup effects my traffic behavior.

The first thing I found was that the bounce rate on a page with an exit popup was the exact same as the page with no exit.

Second, I had absolutely zero user complaints.

Last but not least the amount of leads and sales I got with exit popup was significant.

    Good luck,
    Igman

    It depends...If it's a blog, don't use it.

If it's a squeeze page, then use it. I don't see any logic in trying not to annoy peolle trying to leave your squeeze page. They're not going to subscribe anyway so might as well squeeze every ounce of chance to get them on your list.
