Dear Warriors

damn, I was hesitating on updating to 3.9.

Then came 3.9.1 and I knew that I need to update sooner or later for not getting into troubles.

Today I finally hit that sweat button "Updtate to the lastest WP version" and
what I feared happened.

Wp hangs when I try to get into other sections or try to edit a plugin which is compatible with 3.9.

Can't search for plugins, get "unexpected error" message, several plugins don't work anymore (not WP related - I know that the plugin has to be updated) etc.

Not happy.

Anyone else facing issues?

I have had same problem with you before. First things, i had to do is deactivate all of my plugin through cpanel or ftp. Then I update all of my plugin, and activate it. After that i update my wordpress.

Try reinstall your wordpress. Or find the way to solve your problem through youtube.

Don't be 'not happy' with WP. Be 'not happy' with plugin/theme authors that don't update their products.

The errors you're encountering aren't the fault of WP.

I had not faced any problem with upgradation of my wordpress version. Yes! It is necessary that your themes and plugins are compatible with the latest version of WP.

I'm aware that the plugins have to be updates to make it work nicely.

But when I try to go from the plugins section to the widget section the page loads endlessly and "hangs". I have to reload over browser.

That's most probably not a plugin related problem and that's why I ask you guy's if someone face the same issue.

On one of my sites did this. I was stuck in the plug in section too.

The only thing I noticed about that site compared with others is a specific plug in I have on that site only. I deactivated it and it worked again.

Forgive me but have you temporarily deactivated all your plugins to see if the problem persists?

Thanks for the suggestion, NO I haven't because I can't.

I have a plugin called EZ Price Table which displays currently a price table at my homepage, working fine.

But the plugin seams to have a problem as I can't edit anything and can't setup any new table. Looks like it should get an update.

If I deactivate the plugin I fear that it won't work anymore.

But seriously, I am in the dashboard and click at APPEARANCE and it takes 50 sec. to load that section that can't be a plugin problem IMO.

        Any idea?

          You're resisting the solution here.

It very well CAN be, and most likely IS, a plugin problem.

You can deactivate the plugin by renaming its folder in the wp-content/plugins/ folder. You won't lose any settings, but your front page may malfunction - or it may not, depending on whether or not it needs the plugin to display the table.

Unfortunately, you don't have many alternatives here.

            Hi BWH1,

Sorry I do realise just how frustrating this is but I'm afraid I'm with Steve.

The plugin I had was a big part of the site and it did malfunction after. I eventually deleted it permanently and found an alternative, I appreciate this may not help you though.

Again, this may not help either but I use Jason Fladliens WP Twin. It clones the entire site. By doing this and taking regular clones I don't tend to worry about the updates and it means if it does go wrong, I can test and play around knowing I can re-upload the site. Just gives me some peace of mind and I'm sure there are lots of products similar to that. Though right now I appreciate it's of little comfort.

I do think you need to deactivate the plugin, do as Steve said to retain the settings then experiment. The plugin may not work temporarily on the homepage but you'll know what the issue is at least.

I have seen some issues, mostly related to the toolbar in the main editor, they are probably executing some Jquery scripts that are conflicting with plugins that are now loading in a different way, no specifics, I am watching for 4.0 RC, I always try to test out plugins with the beta or RC then I know if I can safely upgrade to the latest.

You need to have compatible plugins with wordpress version else everything should be alright.
also try to backup your database before update, it always helps if there is any problem, you can revert back to the earlier easily.

I will have to find a way to check my plugins then, thanks for insisting :-)

I have other WP setups with less, different plugins and will check their speed first.

Here's the thing - it's not the number of plugins, it's one specific plugin that's causing your issue, and it's more than likely your tables plugin.

If I had to guess from a distance, not knowing the plugin, I would guess that the plugin uses javascript to build the table, then insert it into the post editor.

WP 3.9 upgraded the TinyMCE editor to a new version, and many - if not most - plugins that interact with the editor have broken. It's not WP's fault specifically, the upgrade to the new editor was LONG overdue. The fact remains, though, that some things may break.

It's easy to say, "why couldn't they just leave it alone?", I get it. But if we were to take that approach, we'd still all be running MS-DOS and 5-1/4" floppies. Change can create some messes, we just have to deal with it.

If if disabling the plugins doesn't fix it it could be your theme.

To disable the theme and have WordPress use one of the default themes, rename the
    /httpdocs/wp-content/themes/currentTheme /style.css

    to something like style.txt

In the alternative you could download a prior version Download › Release Archives

Instructions for installing are here Updating WordPress « WordPress Codex

like Steve, I would also guess it's a bad plugin, but it could also be your theme as Robin suggested.

There is absolutely nothing at all wrong with WordPress 3.9.1

all my clients had no issues with their upgrades, thank goodness
