It's not all about the money...

Well, mostly, yes it is, I know, but it's also about learning new skills.

I'm not making money. I know the HOW of it, I've been around here long enough, but it just doesn't work for me. However, I am not wasting my time completely because I'm learning something.

Today I saved my son around $70 by building him a simple WordPress site for his offline business. Granted, it's not magnificent, but it has plugins and it's a start.

Three months ago I didn't have a clue what a WordPress site was and a plugin was a nice smelling thingy that I had in the electric socket at home.

So, if you're feeling a bit down about this whole IM thing just stop for a while and consider what you have learned. Be glad of it. The income part may come in time.

Yes, very well put. The skills that can be acquired as you learn about IM are good skills even though they may not result in tons of cash today but those skills can be used to assit people - that is definately worth something.

Maybe you could earn some money building similar wordpress site for other offline businesses!

    Katie, I agree.

    Sort of.

And the reason I say this is because it is my opinion that most people spend too much time learning new skills and not enough time learning how to make money.

I've read thousands and thousands of Warrior Forum posts over the years and I'm always amazed and horrified to see how long people are at it without getting the results they truly want...the money part of it.

And my conclusion from all this sad effort of spinning wheels and getting bogged down boils down to this:

They waste too much time learning Everything when they could be focusing on NEED TO KNOW information.

What does one need to know to start making money? What is the minimum of knowledge, skills and time needed to make this IM thing work?

The number ONE lament on WF is information OVERLOAD. They step into the quick sand of IM and many never get out.

May I use you as an example?. Your blog.

You have not branded yourself. Just one of many Grannies out there. Yet you have some interesting hobbies, like jewelry. Why don't I see some samples? Even if you don't sell your jewelry, it makes YOU more real to us...gives us something about you we can relate too.

Spread out a comforter you have knitted and put all the books you've read recently on it, give us a picture. So, if you love books, why don't you have links to Amazon as an affiliate? To etsy for jewelry? To coffee world for fresh beans?

Maximize your blog. You are warm, have a charm and you know how to do Word Press. But don't deprive your followers...give us the opportunity to SHARE in those joys we too have.

See? I don't have a problem with links and affiliate programs, especially if I like the blogger, then I would want to read her favorite book too.

What the NEED TO KNOW part is...you already have all the skills you need to have to start making more money than you can imagine...

The HOW to is use and leverage what you have and to grow in the direction of your goals.

Learn as you grow, but learn what you NEED to KNOW to make the dough.

I agree with you completely. I had to learn again as I lost all interest in IM and when I came back a few months ago I had no idea how anything worked any more. I used to offer a VA service here but I couldn't remember how to do anything.

You made me think - I mean really think. You are right, I'm just a granny with no purpose - other than 11 grandchildren. I don't make comforters, I make wedding boleros, but yes, I will take your suggestions and work with them. I think the main reason I'm getting nowhere is because my passion is just not in the IM niche. THANK YOU I needed that!

A lot of people get stuck thinking the IM niche is the best and/or only way to make money online when they get started. The sooner most people get that belief out of their head, the better off they'll be.

        Good luck to you!

Actually, I disagree with this. I'm new here but it seems like 75% of the people around here spend 99% learning all the tricks and tips for eeking out a penny here and a nickel there. I guess that's OK if what you're looking for is an extra penny or nickel, but if you're really interested in making a viable business, adding a few affiliate links to an underperforming website isn't gonna make much of a difference. At the end of the month you may have a cup of coffee, but that's about it.

What people around here DON'T concentrate enough on is bringing value to their customers. Why should users go to your site in the first place? More importantly, why should they go back? What is it that you can offer people that is different/better/cheaper than your competition can? What's your value proposition to your customer?

The next question, naturally, is can you monetize the value you're giving to your customer somehow, but if you have nothing worth monetizing in the first place, what's the point of your business anyway?

Unless... Maybe the point for you really is just to learn something new... There's certainly nothing wrong with that. But if this is just a hobby, then I'd focus your energies on the aspects of it that you enjoy the most, whether it is writing a blog, learning new technologies or socializing in IM forums. But I wouldn't worry too much about the money side unless that's really the side that you love.

For me the point is to make an income, I don't have one so it would really help

Initially I had to re-learn a lot of things. I concentrated on the IM niche, which is silly really as I have access to over 2000 jewellery making enthusiast and 1000 people interested in wedding supplies.

My son is delighted with his simple website, even more so because it was free and I have had a couple of enquiries from friends of his about something similar

I've taken the advice given here and spent the day changing my blog, monetising with click bank and adsense and making it more appealing to the non IM niche people I will be inviting over to chat, post and comment on knitting, jewellery making and crochet.

I'm also working on setting up a wedding directory/store.

Learning is great, but talfighel and gjabiz are correct, it's time to take action now.

    Great post, Katie.

A few years ago, I didn't know what Wordpress was either.

Fast forward to today, and I have configured the homepage on my blog and made it look how I want it to look. I even know how to do basic CSS and HTML editing.

But echoing what gjabiz has said above - learning is fine as long as that learning has an end goal.

I am earning - the learning thing isn't really a big deal for me though. The biggest thing for me is that I enjoy what I do, whether I am earning or not.

Congratulations. The thing is, this stuff is not instant riches and we need other means of measuring success to keep from getting discouraged. And you have found a great one. Just being able to look back and realize how far you've come and how many skills you now have is excellent.

That is the kind of thing that keep you pressing on toward your goal, without giving up when things get a little rough.

    Thanks for the inspiration.

We hear so often about how easy it all is. Well for some it isn't easy at all. Finding something positive after trying hard for a long time is the only way to give yourself a boost.

I know I could pay to join an MLM programme or pay $2000 to learn how to get others to join and pay $2000 to learn... but that's not for me. It seems underhand, somehow. Or maybe morals don't count in some of the IM niches.

Anyone who tells you it's easy is trying to sell you something.

I can't speak for others, but my wife and I work 60-70 hours a week each on our site. She's been working on it full-time for over two years and it took over a year before it started earning enough to replace the income she gave up. And it was another year before I felt comfortable enough to quit my job and work on it full time too. That said, the site is growing and I'm hopeful that soon we'll be able to hire some people to help decrease our workload. But it's taken a long, long time and it's been a lot of work getting here (and still is a lot of work!).

So no, it's not easy. But it IS possible. So don't get discouraged if money isn't falling from the sky -- I don't imagine there are really many people (if any) that actually make "easy" money.

I spent 3 years on an ecommerce site trying to compete with newegg.com and well I lost my back side.

I discovered WF through a WSO sale. It was a SEO plugin, browsed the forums. Learned about clickbank and jvzoo and within a day or two I made my first sale.

Agreed. But I still think people who make it seem like all you gotta do is pick the cow and it will milk itself are being disingenuous. My wife and I are making enough money to replace both our incomes and soon we'll be hiring some help, but it's taken a lot of work getting here.

Maybe some people can make gobs and gobs of passive income by putting the right links on a crappy website -- but I'm very, very skeptical (the people who claim to be doing that tend to be selling you get rich quick schemes). I can imagine making some spending money that way, but not a real income and that's certainly not how you grow a real business.

I concentrated on the IM niche because I was told to when I was following an online marketing course, but I didn't have the heart for it. I'm a crafter, I make things, physical things with wire and pearls, not ebooks and plugins.

I have clickbank items on the blog now, they don't do anything relevant at JVZoo.

One of us spends about 40 hours a week on social media. Facebook is most important to us be we also write about three blog posts per week, and keep active on Twitter and Pinterest. We also moderate our social media pretty heavily which is a challenge given our size.

On the tech/design side, we create lots of new images to post on social media and our site. We're also currently redesigning our entire site. Other projects include recently coding a script to link our site to a new affiliate's API, upgrading all our servers on Amazon Web Services, upgrading our site's software and fixing bugs that arose because of extensions or custom code we wrote, and writing customizations to work with the new affiliate. We're also always coding other custom site enhancements and features. (We do all our development in house).

Then there's the day to day sysadmin stuff, product updates and additions, answering the large volume of mail and messages we get on social media, the administrative stuff (accounting, etc.), data analysis, the odd media interview, managing interns and the list goes on and on...

To be honest, when all is said and done the 60 - 70 hours that we work really isn't enough.

If you think you're a WP ace, put an ad on your local CL and tell local businesses you do WP or Blog management.

If you use the ultimate seo widget, you can even pop some pages on SE's and sell your skills as 'seo related'.

    LOL

Have you had any huge WP attacks yet on your blogs?

Big security issue with WP they have a wide open post routine, so we had to make a custom .htaccess script to deny any major wp attacks.

Of course. I mean that I know there are a number of ways to get started. MLM schemes, building a list, blogging, being an affiliate and the rest. I have no idea about keywords, CPL - no spare funds for that anyway - and traffic methods. I have also had to overcome feeling useless and lacking in worth, both part of the depression I have suffered for the last few years. I know the how, but none of the above have worked for me so far. 1 blog signup in 2 months isn't success.

I disagree, if your end goal is to make x amount in a time bound setting then your actions that are designed to yield your desired goal should only be a means to an end.

This goes for most things, losing weight, quitting smoking etc...

There is value in learning new skills but if you rationalize your failures by feeling content about your new skill then failure would lose it's bite. And cease to be a powerful motivator.

It's ALL about your goal, whatever that goal is. I think's appealing to say "its not all about the money" in a greed laden world. Replace "money" with another goal and I bet less people would agree with you.

Turning failure into a fluffy bed to fall on, isn't doing anyone any favors.

All this being said; congrats on building your son's site Katie! That's cool!

      Thanks you.

If you fall hard without a soft pillow then after a few try's you give up. It hurts.

The fluffy bed is a landing stage. From that you can bounce a little, it doesn't hurt as much so you can try again.

I do understand what you mean, but please remember that a huge number of people struggle for a long time with IM and most of us don't have thousands sitting around to pay for a mentor/coach. Encouragement is the only thing we have and one success after failure - no matter how small - is what keeps most of us going!

Now I bought another course and then also failed.

This continued for 2 years when I simply read a statement in some article that IM is just to provide Information.

This simply changed my life and I just gave information and since then there is no looking back!

Dear Katie i must say that the positive motivation that you have a secret power that can make loads of money and if you need any help then message me and I will surely help!

IN 2014 HAVE ALSO TAKEN A MISSION CALLED 2014 THAT AIMS TO HELP ALL THE NEWBIE AND STRUGGLERS TO GIVE ALL THE SECRETS OF IM.

That's great that you were able to make your son a Wordpress blog!! Well done. Now, here's the thing - can you leverage it? Does your son have other friends who also need a Wordpress blog setting up for them? If so, wouldn't they be prepared to pay, say $50 instead of the $70 they would have paid somewhere else when they're likely getting a better, more bespoke installation. Could you teach other people how to set up a WordPress blog that would work for their offline business and save them $70 each time - if so, how much would this be worth to them? $5? $10? More? And you can sell it many times over.

Not only have you (and your son ) benefited from your learning - also, you've discovered that your learning has real dollar value - providing that value to others is the key to kickstarting your earnings. Your realisation that your own knowledge acquired over the past few months has genuine monetary value could prove to be a real turning point . . .

Keep on learning and keep on realising the value in your knowledge. Now leverage, leverage, leverage!! Well done

Thank you. (I have no idea where the 'Thanks' button has gone, perhaps I have overdone it today)?

I will do just that. I'm no expert but I can make a simple site, so yes, it has value and I will leverage it.

Nice post katie. The mindset most people have is they are chasing money, does not work. When you provide a ton of value that's when the money will flow to you.The marketplace pays for value.

Yes the higher skillset you have, the more income you will make so its worth practicing the skills you learn. If you find a mentor they will be able to point out where you need to focus your attention next to get you making some money.

    Hope that helps.

I have also been working online for quite sometime and I haven't made much money from my websites, unless a few dollars from adsense counts. Most of my income comes from my article writing service. Hopefully once my eBook is done I'll be able to generate some income through that as well.

Personally, I prefer to sell my OWN products, I think its much more profitable, and your in control.

I tried an online course but I couldn't afford the $2000 they wanted for me to continue it. Mentors are not something I can afford, I have no job and no income of my own.

Nothing at the moment as I am changing the niche to jewellery making, knitting and crochet. All things that I AM an expert on, rather than IM which I am not.
There are not many free offers for those niches though.

            Katie,

There is a ton of free stuff . . . it's called public domain. Just give away vintage jewelry making patterns, knitting advice, and crochet patterns.

Check out this web site. Artistic Thread Works. They have a membership site charging $10/month. They offer tutorials, sewing patterns, a community of members (forum).

Why couldn't you do something similar? This site is making excellent money and is the "hangout" for mostly ladies that love to sew. Why not join for a month, see what they're doing, maybe even become friends with the owners and tell them you're trying to start a site in jewelry making, or knitting, or whatever - they may even help you or let you advertise on their site.

Thanks for your thread. There is hope if you just get a little creative!

Not necessarily. You may not be presenting things in a way that will convince people to buy. Marketing is psychology, pure and simple.

This is so true. There is always a positive way to look at things, instead of focusing on the negative, which in most cases leads to one giving up.

Hi Katie great post. I too had this vision of creating myself an income through IM but kept getting putting it off with feeble excuses but all the while learning as you did.
But then I took action and built a simple website and filled it with lots of hints and tips relating to my work. Then I began promoting this site on LinkedIn and from that I got a lot of enquiries into my work and from there never looked back.

Exactly my point. I know others say that action is the most important thing, but when you have taken that action and nothing positive has happened you either give up or create a positive to keep you going.

      Congratulations!
I disagree that you are not offering what people want.
Every single day people either want a website, or want to know HOW to create one themselves.
You are already ahead of them!
Now you just need to put yourself out there in front of those people, charge a fee, and you're in business!
Have you considered Fiverr? Or even better, you can start right here! Create a report that shows exactly how you did it for your son, and sell it!
People need to know this stuff, so they WILL buy!
      All the best to you!

    Hi Katie
I think many people including me have learnt a lot about IM and website building and seo,but have not made any money.I think the problem of why we failed is because we are chasing money. In one of the webinars that I attend,I learnt that you must offer value and then the money will follow you. This is something that I am trying to implement.
