What's the most cost effective way to launch my website?

Hi All,

This is my first post here so bare with me. I figured this forum is a good place to ask for help since you guys are involved in web design/online marketing/online revenue. I know nothing about such things.

I'm going to launch a website this August for a project I've been working on for some time. I won't say what yet on a public post but its all content/articles based on deep prior experience and knowledge; I'm not selling anything. Just high quality content, about 2-3k words per article. I plan to launch with about 22 articles and maybe add a new one once per month after that. I have a catchy domain name I already bought through GoDaddy.

My plan to monetize the site, since I'm not selling any products/affiliate marketing, is through ad revenue (I know I won't get rich doing this, but if I can make $500-1000 per month eventually I'll be happy).

So my questions are:

Who/How/When do I hire someone to build my site? What costs am I looking at for building the initial site and future maintenance? I want it to look clean and good, like modern high quality content sites I've seen that have fancy comments sections at the bottom of each article, the ability to share it on social media, etc.

Should I put up ads to start at the launch, or should I wait to see my traffic level after some time, and then plan how to monetize it effectively?

Thanks guys!!

      Ryan,

If you're happy with $500-$1000/month you're too easy to please. You could make ten times that amount with just a little more work. Get creative and figure out how to build (or have created for you) your own products.

Advertising based revenue models are great for high trafficked sites and tons of subscribers, but that doesn't sound like it fits your vision for your site.

You can niche down, position your site as an authority, development some specific products based on your experience, and have a real thriving business - but not as an advertiser.

Why put forth the effort to get traffic to your web site then only be paid peanuts when your viewers click away to go elsewhere?

      Something to think about.

      Good luck,

      Steve

Thanks for the replies guys. I think what I need to do is discuss my plan in more detail (including what the content is, on a basic level) with someone knowledgeable from this site. I don't want to just go find some web designer in my city first and pay way too much before I know what my gameplan is.

Even though this is a big project for me, it's not my only income source or a full time endeavor. I plan to launch the site, hopefully build traffic and let the content speak for itself. Sort of a "launch and forget" if you will, other than responding to comments on my articles and maybe adding a new article every so often. My audience isn't all that niche either- its pretty much anyone in the US. Hence my focus on traffic and being happy with just some ad revenue.

Would either of you guys who already replied or anyone else who knows what they're talking about on this forum be willing to exchange emails or phone calls with me to flesh this out more? I'd be happy to pay a small fee for someone's time if they know what they're talking about and I can do some research on their prior posts/history.

Like I said, I know nothing about web design/maintenance or the best ways to monetize my specific content- I just know the content and have almost finished writing all of it.

        Thanks!!

Start with a simple WordPress site and decent hosting.. Approach this as a business, not a way to get rich quick.

Spend time in this section and find the five star rated thread You may want to visit the Seo sub-form. and learn about adsenes. Stay away from WSOs and watch out for information overload. Watch out for scammers. You could try building the site your self, just go type in How to build a WordPress sites in google and watch a few videos. Good luck

Hey, I think this was some great advice from Steve! More than traffic, you should be looking to take advantage of your position as an authority/reliable source on a certain subject. If you are truly generating beneficial content, you will start to see some monetization options open up on their own.

I recommend you take these 3 months before your planned launch date and get your own hosting and install wordpress on it. I use Hostgator, it only costs me about $10 per month. Other decent hosts are bluehost and godaddy and there are many others. Wordpress is a one click install on most hosts... super easy. Also, the settings and controls in Wordpress are almost self-explanatory. Of course most advanced controls are not, but everything you will need will probably be a piece of cake. I started with nothing and I have a wordpress site now and I knew nothing but basic HTML when I started. You can do it too.

Make a good social media promotion plan and do it. If you content is good , eventually visitors will come from search engines. Only search engine traffic can help you to earn. And do stumbleupon daily.

Piggyback off of someone elses traffic. I would start with joint ventures. Then migrate to PPC to see how well your offer converts.
