is it safe to create your own smtp server?

I am using a imply configured smtp server with dovecot and postfix on my marketing site..
I am doing so just to avoid mailchimp o mailgun
what i cannot figure out if would be safe to open my smtp port to about 10/12 users of my django crm application or if i will drawn in spamming and hacking

i am asking this just to know if someone have already tried this "experiment" oer if i should stink to mailgun-mailchimp.

Do you have experience managing a server, or a mail server at that? If not, I'd recommend using a service that specializes in mail delivery or else you'll most likely end up with problems.

      I agree.
There would be back-end experience required to maintain a server.
For reasons as consistent run time and ever more so security. I thought about and attempted it myself and..... No,,, forget about that! Me no experience to handle that.

Let's flip your question. How do you intend to close it to the rest of the world? Keep in mind, it is very easy to spoof an IP address and it is unlikely your users will always have the same IP address, so opening by IP is not reliable.

I'd stick with your Mailchimp connection for safety.

Even if you get around the security, you will have a deliverability problem.

...Even if you're on the right track, you'll get run over if you just set there.

i just dont have the time to defend my ubuntu 12.04 from multiple thread

At the end maybe the best solution (for a django/python programmer, could be mailgun api in python..
