Ways to off-set traffic cost...

Hey Warriors!

Ok, so I have a website with very high quality content on it. The whole purpose of the site and content is to get people on to an email list.

I'll be driving paid traffic to the content on the site which will utilize a pop-up opt-in box.

I want to find ways to offset the cost of advertising as best I can to bring the CPC down and the cost per opt-in down.

Ideally, I want to break even on the traffic so I can profit from the list that it creates on the back end. No mean feat, I know, but every little helps.

I have thought of:

-Adsense
-Selling Banner Space
-Having a really low priced OTO immediatley after opt-in

What else can I do to offset the cost?

Drive it to a stand-alone squeeze page.

This will help as long as it converts. Test, test, test!

IMO it's going to be hard to offset the cost of paid traffic using that method.

It's better to drive traffic to a converting squeeze page -->offer that pays for your traffic -->... then follow up with your content.

You may be spinning your wheels to try and break even the way you mention.

The above options are likely to affect either the quality or number of your opt-ins.

If you want to offset traffic cost, or any marketing expense, you need to understand how much each subscriber is worth to your business. That will depend on your conversion rate and the value of your offers.

These are the metrics that should dictate how much you allocate to driving traffic and any other promotional methods. If, as you say, the purpose of your site is to generate subscribers, the cost of getting those leads should be factored into your business plan.

Anything on your site that could potentially distract your visitors from performing the action you want, whether it's a banner ad or an Adsense block, could dilute your opt-in rates and push up the cost of lead generation. And hitting them with a low cost OTO after opt-in might not be conducive to what you plan for your list, in terms of long-term monetization.

What niche is your content for?

if its IM related then you could create $1 WSO and use JVZoo to add them to your list. You only need to sell 20 copies and you have your money back. Keep bumping until sales dry up.

You can build a list this way foe very cheap and it's a buying list..

You could also send your visitor's to a CPA offer after sign-up in the opt-in box. Of course, it would have to be a related offer to appear seemless. You may get some commissions out of it, but no guarantee of completely break-even....

I completely agree that sending your traffic to a dedicated squeeze (optin) page is the best bet. That will be the quickest way to get an offer back in front of your subscribers and generate some cashe!

Adsense, Banner Space, and other advertising avenues are defeating the purpose. All of those are taking the traffic AWAY from your site and the opt-in. That's why Brent mentioned you should send them to a squeeze page. The whole point of a squeeze page is to get the visitor to do ONE thing...opt in.

I wouldn't worry too much about trying to offset the costs. If the opt-in and newsletter work you should end up way ahead in the long run. Just start slow so that you can optimize and test everything. As things are looking good, keep ramping up the traffic you send.
