And was wondering how many peoples still blog and how many of those make an income from blogging e.g. do it full-time?

    I think it's a pretty saturated market too. Anyone and everyone is blogging these days. It's all a matter of time and consistency though.

    Making money from blogging is certainly not impossible but many markets are saturated and it is very tough to make even a part time living. You really need to build a list along side your blog that you can use for promoting your own or affiliate products. Plus you can send out a broadcast to your list for each new post you publish on your blog, instead of relying on the likes of Google who can slash your traffic in seconds.

      "Markets being saturated" (which many of us believe to be nonsense anyway) has almost nothing to do with the question of whether people are still making money from blogging.

      Blogging is not in itself a monetized or a traffic-attracting activity.

      It's a monetizable activity, of course, but that's a very different matter.

      It seems to me that many people who report in this forum that they've "tried blogging and failed with it" perhaps did so imagining that publishing content only on their own site/blog was, in itself, a traffic-generating activity. The reality, of course, is that for most people the only traffic that's ever likely to generate on its own is a little bit of gradual, eventual, search-engine traffic which sometimes has very little (if any) real monetizable value.

      Also, in these days of lack of significant distinction between "blogs" and "non-blog websites" (with blogging CMS's being used to make all sorts of static websites, and with all sorts of non-blog website-builders being used to make regularly-updated sites which effectively serve as blogs), the whole concept of "blogging" is rather an ill-defined one, with little clear consensus as to its meaning.

      Nevertheless, many people clearly are still making money just from "blogging": I haven't seen Perez Hilton complaining about his income.

        While I agree that it shouldn't be relied upon, it can be highly monetizable depending on the keywords. Just as it depends on the blog that syndicate's your article in the traffic method you preach.

          Just as people (including me!) get to choose their own keywords, I get to choose most of those publications and websites myself (and to select my niches in accordance with how easy and profitable I judge that's going to be to do).

          Please excuse the observation that that seems to me to be putting it rather mildly, when you look at the hundreds of Warriors who have openly cursed their former business models for Google-dependence, having woken up one day to find that they no longer have a business, to speak of, after some algorithm-change, or whatever. A business that depends on Google for its primary traffic is never more than one algorithm-change away from a possible disaster.

          Nevertheless I acknowledge, of course, that some people do achieve some success with monetizing some search engine traffic. It's not like I'm short of search engine traffic, myself (high rankings for a wide range of keywords happen to be a minor side-effect of content syndication, of course): it's just that I can understand why people depending on search engine traffic seem to end up building lists with open-rates of about 15% so regularly that they apparently consider that "normal" (I admit that for me, to have more than 80% of my own subscribers unwilling even to open an email from me would feel like an unmitigated disaster).

    Yes people are making money blogging- some doing really well!

    If you can get your reader base up to a good level and get at least 1000 email subscribers, then you will make money through coaching, affiliate marketing, product creation or all of them.

    People give up to easy with blogging, it's not an overnight success and it takes time to build it up.

    You need to get off your blog to gain exposure, a lot don't do this and fail.

        Not true. A simple, honest blog that gathers followers fast and has adsense or any other ads in could bring you the income you want. I know people who make money with blogging.

    Absolutely...although I do not make a full-time income from blogging...I do use it to build my list and make some extra money...

    Like others have said it takes time to blog and consistency is important...Don't expect to write a couple of blog posts and make loads of money...Posting consistently and optimizing your blog can be a great source of traffic if done correctly.

    People are making very good income from their blog.

    Most of them have been online for years and have many blog post and articles.

    This is just me....If you are new and want faster results to what ever you are promoting, I would advertise your website/links with pay per click ads.

    Ask Viral Nova and I F-ing Love Science and a ton of others. Pretty sure they'll tell you that you can make money blogging, and, here's the kicker...you can make money blogging "duplicated content".

      And you can also get a nice fat judgment against you for copyright infringement. Just because many popular sites are engaging in copyright infringement and getting away with it for now, doesn't mean it's not an incredibly risky thing to do.         Drew was simply making the point (and quite correctly) that if you know what you're doing, you can make money by blogging even using syndicated/re-published content. Another example, albeit not the one Drew offered, would be articles taken and re-published from article directories (which is, of course, what article directories are there for, hello). He's quite right, anyway.

          You're completely wrong. He was referencing viral types sites. Go back and read his post. Those sites are not getting "articles" from directories.

          They are taking images from other blogs and republishing them but with a citation to the source, which means nothing when it comes to copyright law. Permission to reproduce is required, not citation to the source.

          Now, if those sites have permission, then fine. But if they don't - and there are so many blogs that duplicate content so fast that I'd be surprised if they got permission for all of their reblogged posts - then they can get some huge fines against them.

              No one is talking about syndicated content. We don't care about your example because it's completely irrelevant. We're talking about viral sites reblogging content from other sites. They don't get them from directories or syndicated content.

              Have you ever been to a viral site? It's all pics and videos, not articles that you'd find in a directory.

              Drewfioravanti mentioned viral reblogging sites that rely on duplicate content. I addressed specifically that and the copyright infringement risks of doing so. Then you come along and start talking about something completely different.

                    I supposed what I meant by blogging was as in the old original sense of the word.

                    A web log.

                    Seem a lot of you guys are saying the same things.

                    Makes sense.

                    I just found a really good article from Lifehacker on the topic.

                    Some of the numbers that jumped out at me:

                    - Average blogger earns 24K a year.
                    -81% never even earn $100
                    -2% spend less than two hours a day blogging but earn more than 150K

    Blogging is still a very viable way to make money. In fact, many people even in the most saturated of niches are making good money blogging. The biggest issue is what you define as blogging and what your intentions are.

    Blogging 5 or 6 times over the span of 12 months is not going to work out for you. Most bloggers take years to really bring in a huge following, or they make themselves known in their industry through personal branding.

    The bloggers that find major success seem to always have their own products or services at some point. Look at problogger for instance. He makes a lot of money, but he makes money through everything from advertising to his own products.

    If you take blogging as a side project, you may not find success. The ones that make money come up with a content strategy, know their market and understand that blogging is a work in progress. It has to be continual and you need to really network for a long time to find success.

    You see so many people try to charge to make a blog post that includes a link, but then that often sabotages them on the search engines. But if you build a following then people are willing to pay for banner space, etc.

    I make money blogging. That being said, blogging directly isn't what brings in the money -- it's the outreach. Networking with other bloggers. Getting exposure. Getting your name and your expertise out there. That leads to more blogging opportunities, which open up even more opportunities, and so on.

    I guarantee I've had more projects fail than Al Bundy...

    And I'm the Rodney Dangerfield of the blogging market; no respect...

    But... It literally puts everything I do together, and acts like a house/hub for all of my content.

    Not only that?

    I actually love what I do haha... I'd blog if nobody even read my stuff. Call me a #warriorpoet.

    Also... Traffic has really started to pick up haha... (Getting like 4k uniques monthly with absolutely 0 SEO hype).

    (And yeah, I make a little change here and there).

    Just my $.02...

      Do like Sarevok's take on this.

      I love posting on my blog as well and it is bringing in some money but not as much as some others of course :rolleyes:

      But to me that's not the most important thing! I want my blog to be my hub. I also want it to reflect the sort of person I am and give my future readers/customers etc. confidence in the fact that they're actually dealing with a real person.

      And that he happens to know what he's talking about...

      Before I started my blog I visited a lot of IM blogs and found that many had good content added for a while (6 months to a year maybe?) and then the content stopped!

      Some actually looked a bit lonely with no comments against some very good posts and articles, maybe if the bloggers had only....

      Back to my opinion!

      Blogging is actually good fun and I think you really need to treat it as such.

      Enjoy it. Use it to develop your online presence.

      Get your name in the URL if possible! Make your blog you.

      Then when someone starts googling your name to give them that extra bit of confidence in buying your latest product, BAM, your blog will hopefully be at the top of the page.

      You never know, it might make some money itself along the way.

    Blogs can be a great platform to interact with your target market and they can earn lots of money with focused and consistent effort.

    If you're just getting started I'd suggest you only pick one niche and focus all your efforts on one blog until it is successful.

    Many people have failed trying to create 5, 10, or even 25+ blogs all in different niches right from the start.

    Blogging alone, not really - but blogging as a part of a product or service that you sell, then of course.

    Otherwise there are too many bloggers out there with something amazing to say - which is all great if you find your niche - but I rather go about it for supporting a product or service and just talk about areas around it.

    Of course we are - blogging is the best way to get traffic if you publish high quality content - even after Google's sweeping changes in their algo we're still making $7000+ a month from just blog content. You have to make sure you are blogging in a really high paying niche though.

      You could try and do both. One ad and one subscriber form won`t hurt. Especially when you find ads that relate to your visitors and help them solve their issues. A subs form is simply a subs form. But an ad could help your visitors and bring in profits.

    There are a TON of bloggers out there, but are there a ton of bloggers that know internet marketing + marketing as a whole? As in selling a product etc? I do a site edit every month and I go through thousands of blogs. They're all wonderful, with thousands of followers and visitors, but they're lacking one big thing which is monetizing their site.

    I realize it's not hard to even make a blog but moreso how do you monetize?

    I make an average of $450 per 500 word article I write. I know everyone is thinking 'no way, he is an idiot' but its true -- but you have to understand I've been doing Internet marketing since the 90s and I know what articles can actually make money and its not 'dieting' articles. Its things that compare actual products in markets that you can reach the $$.. for example.. specifically comparing the mortgage program offered at Bank of America against what is being offered at Wells Fargo. You get the SEO/traffic because your leveraging those big names and your monetizing because your taking someone that is planning to go with BOA and you use an affiliate offer to push them to the competitor.. for a commission. Granted.. that specific example would not work for a lot of reasons.. but it illustrates the concept and naturally Im not going to give away any of my real secrets here.

      Maybe it is blogging in IM that's dead for those who don't come with fresh information and have a visually appealing blog ala Pat flynn or Derek Halpern, Viperchill etc

      If you are in IM and you are going to come with stuff that has been rehashed to death, forget about it. You won't get much traffic from SEs or otherwise.

      I think topic selection plays a huge part in the success of a blog. If the writer doesn't have the passion and/or if the market for his info is limited then he is going to be disappointed very quickly.

      Alexa - you speak about low open rates. I have a feeling most sellers in IM would have experienced that. I have 119, 490 messages in my inbox - at least 80% of them are IM. I rarely open them.

      And it's not because I got to their blog/squeeze whatever through a SE. Actually, many of those lists I got on through JVs, etc. It is just that hardly any of the info is fresh, the volume of daily email is huge and the programs rarely pan out as advertised.

      Point, if you are new to online marketing - maybe it is best to stay out of IM niche

    Ha ha ha! That is a funny question to me only because I failed so miserably at blogging when I first started trying to make money online years ago. He he he I remember creating a www.blogger.com blog and adding just one post and sat there so sure that I was going to make a profit from it! That was the funniest thing I ever did in my internet marketing career and it tickles me to this very day. All in all I would say YES! Blogging is still very effective in generating sales no matter the niche especially with Blogger and Wordpress sites. I'll probably get back to blogging one of these days though.
