Just WHO are your buyers?

If I was to tell you that women do more shopping than men, you wouldn't be too shocked, right?

Its a pretty well known fact that in most cases, women are the buyers in the family. And while the internet is starting to change the face of shopping, the traditional ways in which women and men shop will take much longer to evolve.

Ever heard the saying "A man will pay $2 for a $1 item he needs. A woman will pay $1 for a $2 item that she doesn't need, but it's on sale."? Well, it's true, men like easy shopping and women like bargains.

And the same is true when buying online. A man doesn't want to spend hours searching and browsing the internet to see if he can get a better deal - he finds what he wants, purchases it and is on his way.

Women on the other hand, will find what they want, then continue browsing to see if they can get a better deal for the same thing somewhere else.

Men are time savers, while women are money savers.

So my question to you today is - who are your buyers? If you are marketing a product that fits a particular area - find out who is doing the majority of the buying.

Perhaps you are marketing an acne cure, is it the sufferer who is doing the purchasing, in which case it could be a male or a female - or perhaps its the sufferer's family member? And as is the nature of families, in this case its most likely (although not everytime) going to be the mother.

If on the other hand, you are selling a product about model car collections, you'll probably find that men will be your majority customer.

So if you know, or at least have a good idea, what can you do?

Well, if you are targetting Men - the best thing to do is make your sales page as easily accessible as possible - aim for the highest rankings and the easiest to use checkout systems. And let your customer know that they are buying the best thing their money can possibly get them. It might not be the cheapest, but they don't need to do that.

And for the women? Well, again, you'll have to ensure your site can be found - but show your customer that she is getting a complete bargain Give a comparison of competitor products, through in some freebies if you like, even make a (fake or real) discount.

You'll be surprised how eaily knowing your customer can turn around your sales!

I don't know if this is always possible, but for me I try to actually get on the phone a few times per month with an "average" type customer, and just learn about how they are planning to use my product. It helps me understand their goals, so that I can further refine the product to do exactly what they want. I've learned so much from talking to customers, and often they tell me things about my product that I didn't even know, or found a use that I would have never thought about.

It is okay to contact me! I have been developing software since 1999, creating many popular products like phpLD.

That's it! Learning from your customers is an awesome thing to do - you might think something is wonderful and they tell you it sucks - at least you can change it and hopefully it will help making better sales... always a great thing to do!

    Hi Suzy,

interesting post. I agree with you 100% that knowing your customer is the most important part in your business. If you know everything about every customer (in theory) you could have a 100% conversion rate. You'd know exactly how to build a relationship with them and what exactly they need or want. Copywriting, product development, etc. - everything is much much easier.

But, although I like what you said about buying habit differences between men and women, I think you can't make a general rule by which someone can make good decisions.

It's all about researching your own particular market, or to be more specific, researching the people on your own particular list and getting to know them. And then testing out ideas you get from the market research.

Test results are very often surprising and a complete opposite of what was believed to be better decision before the test was done.

Again, I like what you shared with us and it's definitely worth testing out.

    Take care,

    ~Davor
