Beachbody / Insanity / Px-90 Marketing Model

Hey guys, I'm getting ready to launch a series of fitness products with the first product going live in about 6 weeks, so I'm looking around for successful companies to model and it seems that Beachbody.com is the market leader.

Does anyone have any comments about how they go about marketing their products?

I heard from someone claiming to have the big boss of Beachbody in his mastermind group that this company makes $400 million / year, with 25% going to advertising, plus I myself have seen promoted videos and banner ads on Youtube for two of the products (Insanity and T25) so they must be successful to pay for so much advertising, but why does it seem that their marketing campaign breaks so many laws of IM?

For instance, there doesn't seem to be any email collection on beachbody.com or any of the product sales pages, nor do they seem overly concerned with capturing potential customers on their Youtube or Facebook pages . . . it all looks like getting as many clicks on the sales pages as possible and, if they buy, great . . .

I know that they also buy a lot of infomercial time on TV and have a sort of affiliate program where people who have bought their products make money when they sell products to others.

I would be very interested in any other info that you guys may have on what they do marketing-wise to dominate this niche -- thanks in advance.

If not, maybe anyone who has experience marketing similar products will have a couple of ideas on how to launch a series of get-lean / get-big / get-ripped infoproducts, build a brand, build a following, etc.

Once again, thanks in advance for all of your comments!

Like you said they have the advantage of a multi-million dollar marketing budget to ensure they get thousands of interested people buying their products.

Since you don't have that luxury, you should use more traditional methods of IM like building an email list to help you launch your product.

Perhaps you can give the first few workouts away for free to build the list, then charge for the remaining videos, diet plans, etc...

They use infomercials. You aren't going to compete with that.

There are some good copywriters in that niche on the forum. Also check out what Mike Geary and Kyle Leon have done.

The weight loss niche is just too competitive

      Thanks everybody for the comments

@kilco16 -- I understand what you mean, but there wouldn't be so much competition if there weren't enough "hungry fish" interested in buying such products. I am currently in the self defense niche where there isn't so much competition, but there also aren't so many interested potential customers, which poses problems in terms of PPC advertising, etc. (not enough searches per day to get enough clicks, etc.)

@drewfioravanti -- Thanks, I am always looking for GOOD copywriters, but I have also seen most of the copywriters here requesting help with writing the copy to sell their copywriting services, which doesn't exactly make a good impression.

If you have any names that could help with affordable copy for the fitness niche, please let me know, per PM, if necessary.

Also thanks for the tips about Geary and Leon -- I was also looking at modeling sixpackshortcuts.com and vincedelmontefitness.com

BTW, you're right that I can't afford infomercials (yet . . .) but, if my marketing is on point I should be able to start with PPC and quickly scale-up if it is profitable from the start.

@JohnRyserson -- Exactly what I was thinking. I want to start with an extensive social media campaign (workout / highlight videos for youtube, twitter, instagram, etc.) and a modest PPC budget and push the newsletter and social media interaction

Thanks guys, I'll let you know how this goes!

It is actually a Hybrid model that works extremely well for them. The hybrid being direct to consumer and Multilevel Marketing. They both feed off each other since people buy it from the infomercials, get good results, sign up to the MLM, and then do videos of how great it is. Beachbody then uses all those tons of testimonials to get more people to buy... Kinda a vicious cycle and one that is amazing to watch.

I have seen interviews where the informercials were not so successful until they started getting all the testimonials so on their own, I am not sure how well it works. But together, great results.

The model also works because the product actually works. I did 60 days of p90x and was in great shape from it except I did aggregate a shoulder injury. Its not like some slob schlepping over priced protein powders or magic pills like some other direct marketing programs.

As for successful models in the fitness industry, there are tons. Beachbody obviously being huge but look at 6 pack abs, very successful as well as more niche fitness related products. There are tons that focus on specific sports (football prep, hockey prep, etc). The key obviously is finding your niche and a need in that niche or a unique way of doing it any go from there.

Sports - Hockey, Baseball, Basketball, Football, Lacrosse, Cricket...
Demographics - pregnant Moms, retired dads, office workers...
Particular diets - Vegans, paleo, etc

What have I discovered about those successful products.

All mid to high price - $49 - $499 price point
      All video based
      Very good editing
      Very good audio
      On screen personality/not anonymous
High affiliate payouts - at least 50%

After you have your core you can monitize it further by dropshipping or private labeling protein powders, creatine and other supplements as well as tshirts and apparel. I would love to see the numbers beach body makes off of their protein powders (recovery drinks).

Yeah. Truth About Abs and Kyle Leon's products have been at the top of, or near the top of, the Click Bank marketplace for a long time.

Do yourself a favor and use the advanced search function...

Go to search: Advanced Search. Then, type weight loss, Mike Geary, and Kyle Leon in the keywords bos (not all at the same time ). Then choose "The Copywriting Forum" in the Search in Forum(s) box. You should find enough good information to keep you busy for weeks.

    And oh, yeah, it's P90X, not Px-90.
