What's a decent email subscribe rate for a blog page?

I have a popular site and I put an email sign up form on the sidebar and then I tried it below each post. Each time I barely get 1 sign up per 2,000 visits. Sometimes less than that. These boxes are well designed - and I tried different designs too.

Does no one want to give their email away anymore?

I know I can give away some freebie, like the overdone ebook or whatever, but for now I just want to get an idea what a decent subscribe rate is for a run-of-the-mill blog post that gets a lot of traffic.

There are so many different things you have to take into consideration, such as niche, your content, the traffic, your free offer, your CTA, etc...

My mini sites usually get 1500 uniques per day. I get 50-70 optins so around 3-5% but my situation might be different than yours.

Where's your traffic coming from and how targetted are they? But really, it also isn't about just being targetted, because if your offer is sooo good... I mean so good, than most anyone would be interested in, making them targetted in the process.

So look at what you're offering, or what your angle is... would you sign up to it?

    It's all about fishing man.

What do you do if 2,000 trout fly right past your bait?

You try some different bait... Right?

Also, you might try something wildly different.

    May I suggest an opt-in pop-up form?

(Aweber and GetResponse can both handle this easily)...

*edit - since you're looking for raw statistics I can concur that my blog is getting 13.3% opt-in rate right now with a light-box popup. And, my popup is ugly as heck. Since I'm lazy, I won't bother rotating to see if I can increase that 13.3%. (I think there are too many variables for this data to be very useful, though. The best advice I can give, is to split test WILDLY different popups to see which one garners the highest interest. It's all about fishing... man).

    Over and out.

Yes you can try with Pop ups and interesting offer. If it doesn't worth more than sharing email Id, visitors won't share their email ids.

    10 - 15 % is cool.

1 from 2000 is pretty low actually. I think you are lacking a call to action in your blog.
Give them a call to action headline / graphics and test it out.

Yes, I agree. I'm much more confortable with 15%, overall, than with 10%, though.

I'm very happy if I can get to 20% of unique visitors. I don't often quite manage it, though. I'm more or less satisfied with 15% of unique visitors. If it ever drops below 10%, then I assume I screwed up, and I start looking for things to test/change.

(Those are overall figures: obviously, for search-engine visitors, the figures are lower.)

Ach, sorry ... should have read that bit first. I can't really help with that - have never tried it. I'm an affiliate marketer, so list-building is the primary purpose of each of my sites, and I can't afford anything run-of-the-mill.

Here's an easy formula you can use. Last month I saw just over 36% of uniques opt in.

      Here's how I did it:

I don't put an opt in on the side bar, people are blind to those things for the most part.

I write super engaging copy that is highly valuable and has humor thrown in. I really go out of my way to ensure you get a benefit from the page you're reading.

I put an opt in light box that shows up 20 seconds after you land on the site. This way I'm relatively sure you're interested. I cookie the light box for a 45 day no show.

I put a really well designed opt in at the bottom of the post. This has a headline, body of benefits, call to action and opt in. The graphics are good and the freebie is amazing, not a piece poo. Instead, something you'd really want.

Then my AR series is world class. I have people sending others to my sites just to join the list. Yep, the content is that good. Remember, I said the "content" is that good. I have people email and ask if I have another list they can subscribe to? Why? Again, remember, I said the CONTENT is that good.

There is your recipe for success.

      Thank you, Patrick
