Search Google for "royalty free images" you can get good quality inexpensive images with rights to use them.

Most free images may have copyright issues.

  Just wondering what kind of trouble you can get into?
  
  Most of my sites are Amazon review sites, and for them I think that I am right in thinking that you can use the product images straight off Amazon to promote products.
  
  For other articles then I google my keywords and add creative commons or royalty free. I'm always happy to credit the owner (because thats what good informative sites do right?)

These types of images are called "Royalty free images" and a simple google search will bring many result. But make sure you follow all their terms and conditions or you can get in trouble.

Hello,

When using images of recognizable people for advertising not only should you make sure you have a properly licensed image but you should also make sure you have an image that has been model released.

Pixabay is a decent source for obtaining public domain images, some of which are also model released.

It depends on your end use --> under fair use doctrine an image "may" be legal to use.

But for advertising, marketing and many other end uses you need check the license terms and obtain an image that has suitable terms for your use.

The Google Image Search images are not owned by Google so you need to check the terms of the individual images. Google has filters to help filter the images by license type but they still do advise to check the terms of use with the actual image source.

Even if the image has a proper license you may also need a property or model release depending on the image subject(s) and your use of the image.

It's called copyright law and violators can be punished up to the amount of $150,000 per image, per violation.

U.S. Copyright Office - Copyright Law: Chapter 5

Most countries have similar laws...

As a general rule US copyright extends 70 years beyond death.

The problem with using images found through Google Images it that it finds almost all images and not just images meant to be sold, shared or given away for resuse. This makes it hard to contact the actual owner of the image and hard to find the actual terms of use. Google does incorporate some filters into the system but the filters are not foolproof.

If you want to be sure of your rights then purchase a stock image with an appropriate license, if you want a free image that you don't need to attribute then find a proper public domain image.

Microstock image sites make images available for just a few dollars so that is one way to be safe and not spend a bunch of money.

If someone owns that image, they can sue you if they find out.

You need to make sure that you are doing things right and have permission.

Most of the time, the person who owns that image does not care if others use it or not.

I use Getty images now. The embed option is awesome. Like these are great for a blog, but not for commercial use. Also, Pinterest clones are available, but they have less pictures ready for you. Getty has 32 million images. Quality is better than FLICR, but I also use flick river. Most of the pictures are based on creative commons.

Been using 123RF for a while now.

Pretty good database and reasonably priced. Loaded $20 a few months ago and the images still keep coming

Personally wouldn't touch free images now, the quality (and licensing) from some of the paid sites makes it worth it..

I'd be careful with the images you use as you are using them for advertising and a lot of stock photos will only allow editorial usage.

Personally I use 123RF (Stock Photos and Royalty Free Images from 123RF Stock Photography) and they'll dictate whether an image is for editorial or for any use. It's only $1-2 for the image size you'll be looking for and means no worries about infringing on copyright laws.

Getty images is good but you need to follow their guidelines as they are happy to send fines out to people who misuse their images and a few thousand for just 1 image.

They also own istockphoto
