What Can You Learn From The Spammers?

by John Taylor 21 replies
Here are a few subject lines from this morning's in-box..

  • Be Better Than Average, Not Just Average
  • You Should Feel Excited About This
  • Open A New Page In Your Life
  • What They Don't Want You To Know

Whoever sent those spam mails clearly has some marketing
smarts.

This guy however..

  • Your email address has won you 1,925,567.00 British Pound.
I know for a fact that my email address has maxed out its
credit card and couldn't even affors to buy a ticket!

So, don't just delete those spam emails - see if there are any
subjects with potential first.

John...you get some classy spam at least.

      I get stuff like.....

      1. FBI CIA needs you to call us now or you will.......

2 We are watching you..right now and.....

3 Hey Vince...your bank account has been hacked... Note: (if it wasn't hacked...it will be when I log in)

4.Your Ex Wife's lawyer might be planning.....

      5. Jason Moffatt and your girlfriend were at Motel 6 and.....

      6. That porn site you watched last night was sent to your mothe..........

      7. That burning sensation you feel in your crotch area is due to .....

      8. That bag of dope you flushed in 86?.....we found it..........

      9. 27 ways to find the hooker of your dreams and.......

      etc. etc.

That's about the sum of what I get in my box......most of which I open cuz I'd hate for one of those examples above to be the real deal. That's the thought that wakes me up in the middle of the night in a cold sweat.

So yeah...I pick up a lot of trojan viruses....but at least I have peace of mind. Cuz one day..that so-called spam..is gonna be a real email...and I'm gonna be ready. And then, I'm gonna laugh at you'se spam haters for mockin' me.

In anycase, it often amazes me that some of the worst smammers out there are among the best copywriters...cuz they are forced to write shit that literally contains less words then a good old fasioned classified ad.

I should do a WSO someday...and try and reach these people....and turn their lives around......and use their power for good not evil....

But I'd have to spam them back to reach them?

A lot of spammers have excellent copywriting skills, which makes it even the
more sad that they don't put their skills to better use.

I teach all my people to open up their spam emails to get copywriting ideas
from them. I do and some of them are killer.

Maybe I should thank my local spammer for the education.

Wouldn't surprise me in the least if some spammers are learning their trade right here. There are a lot more people lurking than posting.

I was once horrified to learn that one of my students was using his new skills to commit armed robberies.

The ONLY spam I get has to do with a part of the anatomy I don't have. I don't think it matters what your name is. They are desperately fishing for men with small... egos.

One thing I did learn from spammers, or rather because of them, is that the new MS Live Mail allows you to block whole domains, which solves the problem of randomly generated names @ domains defeating my name by name blocking. It wouldn't let me block @yahoo.com, which is where 90% of the spam comes from, but it did let me create a message rule to do that.

In combination with my safe list, which acts as a gatekeeper, I've got spam down to about 1 email per WEEK, vs. the 50 per day I was getting.

The spam I get isn't so creative. Almost all of it I can instantly recognize as spam based on the subject line or sender, which means they've failed if they couldn't get me to open the message.

The spams I'm most likely to open are the ones that could be from customers:
    "help me"
    "money back guarantee"
    "please answer"
    and so on.

My favorite are the fake news events, like "Tom Cruise killed in car crash", which I think would be all over the news.
