AMAZING NEW INFO I HAVE NEVER SEEN ELSEWHERE. YOU'LL LOVE THIS

Hello Warriors,

Recently, I stumbled upon a new technique that totally
made an overhaul on my work system. I'm an IM and
I sell stuff online and normally need website designs
made for me since I don't have the time to do them
myself. Now, you are probably wondering...

What is this about?

Well, I decided to try something I had in mind since a
very long time ago. I went off to some local universities
and colleges (and even a couple of highschools) and
talked with their deans/Head Teachers/principals about
the following:

I decided to give away scholarships of different kinds
for the best students that created my websites/programs
that I needed and even for a 150 page essay (which I made
an ebook).

You probably tell me, Peter...why would you go for all that
trouble?

Well, it was no trouble at all and it was just as easy as talking
with a few people here and there. You can even do this via
email since I did it for 1 school and worked out pretty good.

What was the outcome of all of this? (What was it that I did)

I started this scholarship give away in late January of this
year and basically made contests which included scholarships
that ranged from $250-$1000 for the winners to be announced
in late April/early May.

The contests basically included a winner amongst the best designers,
product creators, and essay writers.

Now, to make it for my benefits, I stated in the scholarship entree
form that all submitted work would become property of my
company and that it could be used in any way I wanted and all that
blah, blah, blah stuff.

I decided to do this because I wanted to contribute to the needy students
from school. If you ever went to school, you know what Im talking about.
Of course, by doing this Im basically paying the same that I would pay a
freelancer from out of the country, but instead, I gave it to some students.

My outcome was that not only did I get amazing results, but I got plenty to
choose from for about another year. By this I mean, that since all the
work submitted by the students is now my property, I can use a lot of the
designs (which I really liked).

The only hard part was deciding on the winners. Aside from that, it
turned out to be an amazing project of mine. I had a total of 317 projects
submitted and a total of $2000 awarded.

Today, I have designs and products made for the whole year to come,
and I only paid $2k for it, and best of all, I gave some students the
opportunity to pay for books or other things they need.

They were happy because they got an award to show for a resume,
and I am happy because I got what I wanted and even more.

This was only a small project but I can see this growing as my
business grows. You can benefit from this if you need something
made just like me and best of all, you get a positive mind about it.

To sum it up:

I got products made (which were amazing in return because everyone
wants to win something by creating their best), I paid a very low price
overall and I gave the opportunity to a student out there.

This might benefit you in a way or it might not, Im just here to offer
something valuable to you all just like you do to me.

That seems like a very interesting idea. I can see how that would work very well in many niches. Thanks for the great strategy!

Ya, it could definitely work for different niches, and since you are
implementing the concept of competition, you'll get their best
      efforts resulting in amazing results.

Just so you can have an idea, I received several essays that literally
hit me in the face. I did not know how super extensive research could
      impact the information written about.

If you end up using any students work that did not win I suggest you pay them for their hard work and reward them... even if it is just to pay them from the profits that you generate from their work.

I thought about this, but decided to do something the teachers asked me
to do which was to offer a letter of recommendation to every student that
submitted work. Plus, I will probably get more work from the same students
that I actually use work submitted from.

Now, this is only from what happened to me (specially in colleges). They said
that is it unfair to give money to students that were not winners but instead
to award an "Outstanding Award" to them. So thats why I took the above described.

Now, since this was a new project for me, I will polish up some stuff in
      the future.

I did this in a medium-big city and I can see how good
can it turn out if implemented in smaller cities. I bet you can
make it to the news as..."Charitable institution promoting studying"
and from there, even more name branding.

Now, if you go for super cities, then you can get amazing results.
This of course, provided this formula:

    Small city=less schools ~~~~Big city=more schools

Great angle and love the approach. You didn't just think outside the box, you came up with a whole new shape. 'Grats on the innovation and results.

I know you said their teachers suggested you write letters of
recommendation, but if you are profiting from somebody elses'
work, I believe you are morally obliged to reward them better
in some way. Even if it's just giving them some book tokens,
or buying them beer and pizza once a month.

Excellent idea however. Well done. I like originality.

      Hi,

BTW, there's no need to use all CAPS in your title. It's deemed as shouting on the internet, which is rude. Also, I don't see anything particularly amazing about it, and some people feel that over-hyping is rude - especially when it leads to a pitch for a WSO.

Also, this is not particularly new. Offering a competition prize to gain user generated content is not really a new concept.

I decided to give away scholarships of different kinds
Can you tell me what kind of scholarships these were? I imagine that when dealing with Deans, head teachers and other people who are in the know, they would have to be completely above board, worth having and legitimate and totally and transparently (in the eyes of the Dean/teacher) within this concept -

I decided to do this because I wanted to contribute to the needy students
from school. If you ever went to school, you know what Im talking about.

And gave the rest of the students an opportunity to bang out 150 page essays etc for little more than a tilt at helping to fill your sites for nothing for the next month, at a time when they have already got the pressure of coursework and exams weighing heavily? The first person to think of slave labour was innovative too, but that's not to say it was a good idea.

Head teachers and principals already have enough to do without fielding the amount of calls from wanna-be IMer's seeking cut-price content that would result if this idea were to take off, not to mention all the re-sits they'd end up organizing for the students who'd been distracted from their coursework by the idea and found themselves with mediocre exam results because of it and the realisation that you can't eat a letter of recommendation.

I'm glad you get a positive mind from it, but it wouldn't sit well with me. I'd rather outsource overseas, where my dollars are worth more than they are here and help to put food on the table for everybody that contributes towards putting food on mine.

I went 3 years into architecture school (then I stopped because by the 3rd year I was making a decent living online). During high school, I did tons of work for other people just to try and get a scholarship...it certainly never, ever affected my grades because that's part of school...doing projects. During college, it was even more popular. I remember during my second year at architecture school, some door making company offered $1000 for the best door design they got as a scholarship. A good friend of mine won the scholarship contest but to all others that did not, we had another chance next year.

That company also endorsed that if we were not the winners, they could still use designs submitted by students in the future without notice, and this is the way it went. I never complained or anything, because when I entered the competition it was explained to me that could happened.

Well, thats why I did. I tried working out money rewards if I decided to use someone else's projects as well, but being colleges, I was told not to since this evaded the whole purpose of the actual winners.

This is only what I did. The deans surely liked it because all in all, they are there to help students out, and they felt this helped them out. Of course, some schools denied my offers because they were too low paying for their standards.

This is just my story, some people might like it, some others. I was thought in school never to try to please everyone, because I would never be able to do so.

This was sort of like been there done that type of thing for me.

Thanks for your honest feedback though

In all fairness...this is the way scholarships work. They all want you to create something or write a ton of stuff for peanuts...

No one actually offers substantial money in the scholarship game so you have to write, write, write, write to get anything over a grand.

I think his idea is pretty damn good. I'd do a little more than 2k for all the kids but hey, it's a start. Don't knock someone for sharing an idea that no one talks about on here.

College kids need money and he needs content...as long as he's not misleading about it then he's not committing anything morally wrong in my opinion. Writing a ton of stuff for scholarship breeds discipline in high school kids...any graduate knows they'll need to it to get through college so it's a good start to reality...

      Cheers,

I am sure doing more than 2k the next time I do this, but like like you say, I did not know how was it going to turn out and it was a start form me. I actually did the following:

        1 prize @ $1k
        1 prize @ $500
        2 prizes @ $250

I would probably do 4 $1k prizes next time I do this or even more (who knows), and Im sure it will be beneficial to the lucky fortunates.

There is an easier way when it comes to getting multiple submissions to choose from on design work:

99designs Leading Designer Marketplace for Logo Designs and More?

Anyone interested in the concept introduced in this thread is going to love that site because it produces a similar result... with professionals submitting their work and you get to choose the winner.

Plus you don't have to set up a scholarship program just post a project and let 'er rip :-)
