I know that Spam is a major problem for all forums, but this is getting a bit over the top. About half the posts on the front page of this section are for 'new Deli call girls' or something similar.

Prior to the ownership change, these types of things seemed to get pulled down much more quickly and things were kept cleaner. Or at least that was my perception.

Is anyone aware of anything being done about this? I'm sure there are dozens/hundreds of people who would volunteer to be 'mini-moderators' who have access to immediately remove these types of obvious spam posts.

I hope something is done soon!

Michael

    Mike,

Don't worry. As soon as the moderators come over, they will get all of them deleted.

I wish I was one of the moderators here and have the power to delete them right now.

I agree. I'm tempted to volunteer but I know that nobody wants me as a moderator of this place so I'll just live with the noise until somebody arrives.

But man, I have NEVER seen it THIS bad.

Not that I've been on WF for nearly as long as you, but I agree! The first 3 pages of the SEO forum are beat to death with spam.

Yeah..The problem is waiting around for the moderators...Some of these posts are pushing 2-3 hours old now. This never happened before...I hate to sound like 'that guy' who complains about the new ownership, but this is a problem

About 80% of the main forum is spam posts.

Yeah, this is a problem. And if as one member said some of these posts are going on 2 to 3 hours old then we have an even bigger problem.

Well, I'm offering to volunteer to clean this place up, but like I said, nobody wants me as a moderating of the Warrior Forum.

        Geesh...what a mess.

Just so you know, nothing has changed as far as the moderators with the new ownership. Still the same group of us. This situation today has nothing to do with the change of owners.

This is just a case of none of the moderators with ban authority not being online at the moment. It will get sorted out soon though.

But do you need ban authority to delete posts? Certainly a moderator should have the functionality to check off a number of threads and kill them. If not, something is wrong with the system in general.

Deleting posts doesn't stop the problem.

I've deleting over 1000 posts so far in the SEO subforum. That is the only section where I have mod authority, but I cannot ban anyone, so they are free to keep posting until another moderator is available.

I'll be honest (atypical though my views might be ): the "Delhi call girl" spam - for all that it's an inconvenience - actually offends me a lot less than the articles pasted in by marketers whose sig-files are promoting something closely connected to the article they've posted to start off a thread in the Main Marketing Forum. One's direct and not pretending to be anything other than what it is, while the other's deceptive.

Call me a skepchick, but it seems to me that sometimes we complain about the wrong things, here.

            It's not damaging any Warriors.

I haven't seen any of the spam discussions mentioned but I'm sure they were here earlier. It might have more to do with the spam prevention plug ins being used on the forum as some forums are getting heavily spammed while others are not.

Hopefully, we can encourage everyone doing this type of thing to start contributing in a more worthwhile manner that builds up and strengthens the community so that everyone can share and learn more, not just start these spam posts to draw attention to a signature line.

I thought that in the past if enough people reported a post, it would go into a queue for moderator review and it wouldn't be visible to the 'general public'. I could be wrong on that.

Either way, I appreciate the update!

As far as I know, it still stays visible until a moderator does something about it. I could be wrong though. It's happened once before.

Unless it's changed very recently, if 3 or 4 different people all "report" the same post, it gets soft-deleted (removed) until reviewed by a global moderator.

This is naturally slightly impractical when one "wild spammer" is on the loose with 30+ posts. But here's the thing, guys: it doesn't matter very much when it's only Delhi call-girls. It's not actually damaging anyone. Within 2 or 3 hours there's usually a global mod online anyway, and then it's gone in seconds.

That might still be true. In my experience from what I see in the mod forum, things are usually deleted long before 4 people have to report it, so I cannot confirm it.

In this case, like you said, with one person posting so much junk, each thread is not getting reported 4 times. 1-2 times at most so far from what I am seeing.

              That's correct.
It used to take 3 reports to make a thread vanish until mods can decide it's fate.
It used to work quite well, but now people prefer to start a thread about it.

I've been moderator on three forums in the past and Admin on two forums - it's no picnic and no matter what you do....someone isn't happy with it.

Owners posted that new mods have been hired and are in the training. That's good because it meant they are going to KNOW what they are doing and new hires won't have dogs in the hunt.

Best we can do is support the new management while it gets all the ducks walking in a row. After all we have gained from this forum over the years, I don't think a little patience is too much to ask.

As I understand it, that was the problem . . . somehow the 60 wait got disabled for a while so the spammers didn't have to wait between posts.

Now everyone can see why it's a good thing there is a 60 second wait. It slows down the spam tremendously.

              Yes I saw that.
The qualification requirement may well decide the current mods fate.
The successful applicants will work in one office, meaning they'll all be on the same time zone, and the regular hours are Monday to Friday.

Great, instead of mods like we had in the past, now we're going to have mods like over at facebook who have no clue about Warrior or the people here following a rulebook.

        Alexa -

I think it has changed as I notice reporting doesn't seem to remove the posts any more. That's probably the big change right there.

It used to be a certain number reports removed a questionable post/thread until mods could look at it - now it may "flag" the post but doesn't seem to remove it even with multiple reports.

The new owners said they are "training mods" but people new to this forum won't be as good at moderating it as the members who have been flagging spam posts for a few years now.

Edit: The real problem is the access spam bots/spammers are getting right now. You'll report one but most of us aren't going to spend all our time on the forum cleaning up the neighborhood with in between 60 second wait-times.

Of course. Well, for what it's worth I've offered to help them, if I can, just because I'm online so much and during "European hours", but I'm not at all hopeful. And perhaps understandably. If even Mike Friedman can't remove posts like this, they're hardly going to let me do it.

I can remove posts in the SEO forum only (and did remove over 1000 threads today). I'm useless in here.

Someone is on the job right now though.

Wouldn't matter though. These are left by bots. Members are not fast enough to keep up with a bot. Only solution is banning and even the with the spammer using the right tool and some proxies that can be challenging to keep up with

Okay the Delhi girls might be pushing the real love part but the SEO section has love potions. Who can argue with that?

It has been an ongoing, massive spam attack by one person (bots) and it is being deleted by mods. I've been reporting it for hours and it is disappearing. Prior to the ownership, there were many such spam attacks and they weren't always deleted within minutes of being posted. It really depended on who was "on" at the time. The mods then didn't sit at a computer 24 hrs per day. There are paid mods here now, so you can rest assured that they are taking care of it, along with the mods who may have stayed on after the change.

I guess it wouldn't be much difficult to write a script to reduce the spam the forum is getting.

As far as I know, spammers post identical or very similar content in a very short time period. What I would do is to write a script that monitors if a member posts identical or similar post within a short period of time. Even if the spammer spins the content, such a script would be able to identify it from the links etc.

Once caught, that member will be temporarily blocked from posting again, recent posts will be hidden, the last post will be reported to the moderators. If it is identified to be certain spam after human-eye inspection, the member is banned etc. If it is not spam, the block is removed.

No real member would make identical or very similar posts in a very short time, so with the right script only the spammers will get caught and the real members will not get affected. If the script ever catches innocent members, it can be fine-tuned accordingly.

    Just an idea.

It's very annoying. We're going to have a dedicated anti-spam team and will be installing some device tagging software to block signups from spammers.

There were two banners on it previously (video, kindles). We're going to play with different designs and sizes. The War Room is completely lost on the site, and we want to bring attention to a few things.

IMHO spam threads on the subforums are now (after the ownership change) staying much longer than earlier. Is it because people are less motivated to report posts now? Not sure.

Throwing a captcha on new posts would probably eliminate the bulk of it.

Limiting the number of threads new members can start would alleviate the rest. How many normal users will start more than 5 threads a day? Not many... limit it to one new topic per day (no limit on number of REPLIES within that topic) until they get their post count up, that will give the mods time to catch up. Surely there's a way at the database level to calculate what "normal" use would be and then use that data to create a set of rules for new members.

I definitely like this idea a lot. No need for new members (or regular members for that matter) to be starting so many threads at a time.

Also, what does reporting a post actually do? Just send a notification to admins? I must have done this on 10 posts the other day from two spammers and no change was made for several hours.

captcha will chase people away like fireworks in a dog kennel.

Limit new users to "X"threads per day until they have 50 posts and 30 days.

What I do in my own little forum, which seems to work very well, is have "admin-activated" rather than "member-activated" profiles.

When people join, they get a friendly, automated email welcoming them, drawing their attention to the forum's rules <link provided> and asking them please to reply to the moderators (i.e. to that email) just to confirm their email address and that the forum's policies suit them, and then their profile will be activated so they can post.

The forum moderators (who are all real enthusiasts in the niche - I barely post there at all, myself, to be honest ), just receive the responses and activate the new members' profiles.

        "Spambots" don't reply suitably.

        Result: zero spammers.

It's only a little phpBB forum with 6,000 members: nothing like the size and complexity of this place.

In the last nearly 4 years, since I've been doing this, I think I've had one potential new member who "didn't like it" and sent a rude reply. We didn't need him, anyway.

(I don't suggest there'd be "zero" spammers here: there would still be some, but it's a simple enough system to use, and it would get rid of a huge proportion of the spam, I think.)

Yeah, I have seen them too and they are very annoying.

I can see them in other forums too but they usually get deleted VERY fast.

They post and then their posts get deleted. Then their accounts get deleted too so they are wasting their time.

What's really irksome to me are those, "how do I monetize/promote my site?" threads where they inevitably leave a link to their site right in their post. Maybe it's just me, but I find that extremely lame and annoying. I see several of those a day. Invariably they are promoting something in their sig.

Step 1: Search the forum for the 2,000,000 threads just like yours.
