Looking to build a team of writers, where to look?

Hey Warriors,

I'm looking at building up a team of writers for my niche sites and also maybe a niche service later on.

I'm looking for help on building my team up from other warriors that have built there own team.

There's no limit to my budget that i have to invest, so there is no need to worry on that part.

Rather then me buying articles in batches of 25,50,100 etc.. I'm looking at building my own in house team that i can work with full time.

1: Where are the best places to look for full time/part time writers?

2: How to interview/test them to make sure they can write quality stuff and not crap.

3: How to weed out the problem writers to the better ones?

Your help is much appreciated,

Richard

I'd go to Constant-Content and just identify regularly-selling writers there, in whatever niches you want, and give them private requests of regular work. It's about as good a guarantee of genuine quality and proven reliability as you're going to find anywhere, I think. Realistically, you're not going to find people much better "vouched for" than that. It's perhaps a little bit on the expensive side, but you'll probably get what you pay for and might well be able to negotiate "discounts" for the promise of regular employment?.

If looking elsewhere, call me a skepchick, but I think you need to be really careful to check out independently verifiable references (i.e. people you speak to yourself, not just "available testimonials" which may not mean a lot, and/or articles which the writers may or may not really have written themselves).

I always know plenty of writers here, because people chat with me about getting work and how/where to do so, etc. I have no idea whether or not I might be able to help you (I don't write for others and have never myself employed a writer, so maybe not!), but let me know privately if you want to chat about this, "just in case" I can help.

        Here's another possibility:

        Writer Access

They have a writer ranking system (up to 5 stars) but other than that, I think you would have to pick some experienced and "busy" writers and test them out.

        Good luck,

I would say it depends on the amount of content you need. Content mills are good if you require a ton of work in a short amount of time. If you're looking for higher quality content, then I'd suggest searching for freelancers. The majority of top writers that I know avoid content mills like the plague for various reasons, so you may get stuck with lower tier writing if you choose that option.

Like Alexa mentioned, Constant Content is awesome. I've sold a ton of stuff on their in the past, but expect to pay a much higher rate than anywhere else.

      Richard -

Another way to proceed is to find several writers who are well recommended and then test them with small and then larger orders to see how they are with both quality and time management (deadlines).

I've known quite a few business owners with significant writing work to be done who have built a core group of writers who don't work exclusively for them but put that business owner's work as a "priority". Be clear and detailed on what you want from the writers - look for writers who are already known for quality work. You can create a quality team of writers without the hassle of an 'in house' team - it's another option.

Pay the occasional bonus and send work regularly to quality writers - and they will put your work at the top of the heap when you need them to.

I don't think there is a shortcut to finding quality people - you have to research and try them to find the right ones whether you hire in house or outsource.

I have a few sold, but cheap, people that I would send your way.. charging $5-10 bucks for articles but they are brilliant and I don't use that word lightly. PM me if you want their details. I have an inhouse team as well but listen closely.. if your 'plan' is to auto blog.. aka have them write articles, post them on sites, build backlinks to those articles and let them cruise.. think again.. thats the old way of doing it. Sounds like this is going to be a new project so 'bring it up a notch' and jump on the modern version of content marketing and its methods.. not the stuff you find in ebooks and what not. If you need help I'm NOT a mentor, can't sell you a PDF on it.. but I can point you in the right direction.

No, defo nothing like an autoblog. I'm investing in "Quality" niche sites, or improving the quality of my already established niche sites.

I was trying to cut the time down on how much time i spend looking for writers. I was a guy that just went from one writer to the next.

Just trying to establish a team that i can stick too.

Yeah i'd be interested in those details, Thank you!

Everyone, I tried to thank you all, but my thank you button has disappeared.

I've taken everyone's advice and will be putting it into action, Yes i do believe a lot of testing is in order to find the "Good writers", which i don't mind doing. After all, quality over quantity wins every time.

I'm drumming up a list of writers as we speak, whom I'm looking at contacting.

Is there any other places such as Constant Content, that i can have a look at?

Appreciate everyone taking the time to share very useful information for me.

Judging by your OP, quality is highly significant to you, and you're not looking for $10 articles from a third-world country?

The standards at the other "content mills" are likely to be so far below that at Constant Content that by comparison, they're probably not worth talking about, IMO.

The people at CC have done a proper literacy/grammar test, to be accepted, and had a sample article inspected, and you can even see what sort of articles they're selling to real, paying customers, and how often, and what proportion of their work sells, and so on. It's really going to be difficult to match that.

Yeah i am focusing on quality more then anything. I tend to be more successful with my current niche sites paying on the upwards of $40 per article if not more, not bashing the third world countries, I've had some really good stuff, however for my own niche sites, I'm looking at improving the quality much more.

However, I do tend to jump from one writer to the next. Time consuming, but at my own fault...

I agree with the Constant Content recommendations above. I was just accepted to their site a few weeks ago, and although I haven't sold anything yet (I've only posted a couple articles so far), I can vouch for the superior quality of writing that you will find there. Constant Content has a testing process that you must go through before being allowed to submit articles, so most of the writers there are good at what they do. Even after becoming a member, you must go through a strict review process before each new article is accepted.

Anyway, get a hold of me if you're still looking for writers. I could probably help out.

There are some excellent writers on elance and other freelance sites - look for top ratings (no excuses) - length of time they've been writing for the site - variety of testimonials/reviews from paying clients.

Don't know about other sites but on elance you can invite top ranked writers to submit a bid for your job. You should be willing to give details about the type of work - how much work you need - and some info about the topic/niche and emphasize your focus on quality work.

I have areas I enjoy writing in and a few that bore me to the point I won't take on a project in that niche. I think most writers are like that and there are some that can and will write on any subject. I never bid on a "blind ad" (no topic/niche given) - just my luck the person would want 100 articles on "cell phones" and I'd go bonkers from boredom.

There are many very good writers out there - all you need is to find a few.

        Hi Richard,

I've used Constant-Content as well as iwriter.com. I have to say, I've had better quality and turn-around with iwriter.com - I still turn to them often for help on a variety of projects I have on the go.

An even better idea is to get in touch with Ywanda Black of InkwellEditorial.com and Carol Tice over at MakeaLivingWriting.com. I believe they both send out job leads to their subscribers on a regular basis. There's no doubt they both have a very large and talented following of freelance writers who are always looking for work.

Hope this helps! And good luck with your search.

Consider also using offline or local sources for finding writers. For example, I've obtained most of my best writers from local universities. Their competence can be checked relatively easily by asking for some term papers, thesis, dissertation, etc. But don't be "cheap" when buying articles from them; you are also paying for their expertise on subjects they've studied for years.

I agree. Freelancer is also a good place to hire a team of writers.
And I think they've expanded their network after they bought WF. You can look for writers in the Warrior For Hire section as well.

Other sites you could try are the following:
      1. Staff.com - more focused on full-time hires but they also employ part time writers etc.
      2. iWriter
      3. Guru.com
      4. Odesk

Getting a few private messages as well with some advice, so that's good.
