So I just opened a shop there and I'm in the process of creating my website too. I will be sending digital files by email, so I think it's a pretty good way to build a list or can I even do it that way? Do they actually have to "subscribe" or just by giving me the email, can I then use it to promote other items. Does anyone have luck with this?

It is better they subscribe as this will reduce spam because some may even forget that they gave you their email.
Using autoresponders helps to deliver your email straight to the inbox instead of junk/bulk/spam folder and will also help you to handle large mailings at once & instantly.

NO! A buyer is not a subscriber. The buyer is just that, a buyer of one of your products.

You cannot use their email address to contact them, or contact via convo, about anything other than the original purchase. Should you do so then you won't have an Etsy account for long.

If there is a (non Etsy) website link in the item that you sell and the buyer connects with you and signs up there then that's another matter, just don't try to build a list directly via Etsy.

If the digital files relate to hand crafted items - knitting patterns, tutorials - then they can be sold via Etsy. Though as they have now opened up to Chinese tat goods it's not such a great place to sell any more.

JCorp, they DO have their own autoresponder. You are not allowed to collect the email of your buyer directly from Etsy.

If they give you there email after making a purchase WITH YOU, then you can try sending them a link to a squeeze page where they can subscribe to receive other offers... BUT, make sure that squeeze page is enticing enough.

Also, if you can somehow get them onto your auto responder immediately after making a purchase with you, this auto responder being either self-hosted or through a commercial auto responder, then you've got their contact info and can email them anything you want. You control the process.

If Etsy has their own auto responder, they may have their own rules, so you'll want to check on what's allowed and not allowed.
