Translating English articles to different language

Is it good idea to translate English articles/blogs to a different language and edit it little bit then publish them. How would that affect for SEO? Will google penalize my site?

It's not helpful if it's a machine translation, also, not worth the effort unless you are trying to attract visitors that are native users of the second language.
