What is the attraction of these new style sites the big boys are starting to use?

Just to name a few.

ok they look cool but I don't like them

They fill your screen witih an image or video, ask you to join or optin before you know anything about them, make it hard to navigate and learn more.

I don't get it.

I totally agree.... I'm not a fan at all.

No personalization.....no visitor involvement....no trust building. Just an in your face form, and some pretty background image.

I'll go against the grain and say I like them...it's a format that fits well with mobile / tablets. Images are the new paragraphs

Sounds kinda like what we Internet Marketers do with our squeeze pages.

There's a difference. These pages are their home pages

Normally you don't make your home page a squeeze page. If you do you include an enticing offer and at least tell a little about it.

These pages are their home pages, they give almost no information, are in your face wanting you do sign up before you know anything about the offer, the company, etc.

Marketers should take note as this is what most of them do.

Provide value first and then (only then) allow them to optin for more information.

You know what's even funnier Ron... they probably paid some marketing 'experts' thousands and thousands of dollars to come up with those minimalist designs. I think companies as big as Paypal probably assume they can get away with it and don't need to do much explaining. But yeah, definitely lesser known brands should be providing a lot more information to their website visitors.

Agreed, you have to sit back an adjust. It's a turn off for me. I am on a desktop most of the time; however, I think it may look decent on a laptop. I don't know what you're using, but most people use laptops as I understand it. It's the larger screen where I think it's an issue. What's the display like on mobile devices I wonder?

The difference between you and them is that they are well known brands that can afford to have a huge squeeze page on their homepage. People already know about them, so all they want is to make it as easy as possible for people to sign up.

This thread makes me happy. I felt like an dinosaur for not loving the new style so I'm glad I'm not alone. I too also dislike the total absence of info, just a signup/login. But as already stated, I guess if a site is large enough they can get away with it.

This thread makes me happy too.

Lots of competitors debating the minutia of
whether a big image is a good thing or not.

Means us grafters can sneak stuff in front

A guy trying to sell to my company sent me an email with a link to his site. It was the style you're talking about. I got a vague notion of what the product (a kind of competitive intelligence tool) did, but no actual info on how it worked, specifically what intelligence it offered etc. I am pretty busy at work, so I tried searching the site for maybe 60 seconds and gave up. Emailed him that I'm not interested.

Too bad for him. My firm spends nicely into six figures on stuff like this. But I figure there are plenty of alternatives to his product. I'm not going to waste my time guessing what he's trying to sell.

I hope he is really happy with how much his site looks like PayPal

^^^This exactly! For example, PayPal - if you don't know what that is then you shouldn't even be on the site to begin with. For these well known brands, I think that is the next step for them to stand out and I think it works.

Wow! So if you don't know exactly what a company is or does or have questions then you shouldn't go to their site?

I guess I've been wrong all these years. I thought that was one of the reasons you go to a website.

          Whatever your opinion,

companies on the scale and sophistication of PayPal test and track everything.

One can be confident that it is accomplishing the desired result better than the old design.

I don't believe they would just willy-nilly change the home page.

Of course, what works for PayPal may not work for you - or me.

They are most likely here to stay. As one person already pointed out its driven by mobile devices. multiple pages with touch navigation doesn't work well and maintaining two designs is just a big headache.

LOL Paypal, Ebay, Amazon, Facebook - how many peope have no idea what these are and need to go to the website to understand that? Google can explain enough, I'm referring to well knows companies like that. You said that they ask to join before you learn anything about them, I would hope people are educated enough to know what Amazon does. I agree with you, for the majority, I don't think these types of websites are good.

I agree that most people have a pretty good idea of what companies like Paypal, Ebay, Amazon, Facebook do. But that doesn't mean that people still have questions about them and websites used provide information should be easy to find.

Then there's always the problem with smaller companies like Udemy using that type of site. Seriously what percentage of the population have any idea what Udemy does?

            Anyway good discussion, thanks.

I personally like them. They are clean cut designs.

The fact that so many "big boys" are starting to use it tells me that it's a formula that has been working (guys like Paypal and Udemy aren't in this to lose money after all, and they certainly build relationships with their customers)

Udemy's especially is really great, it explains the site in one sentence and then provides the visitor with a search bar to start going immediately. Same with Paypal, provides you with the option to get started immediately.

These companies understand that today's consumer has no interest in bullshit, we've all been marketed to 100 times by the time we find their website. We don't care what the story is or the sales pitch or any of that stuff, we just want to know what the product will do for us and if we are interested we'll go from there.

I see no problem with it

But that's the thing though, you don't get to know what the product will do for you since there is no info at all. Just an assumption that you already know who and what they are and ready to sign up.

I miss the time when sites were built in 2 versions, one for computers and the other for phones.

They remind me of full page "image" ads the ad agencies love to use. The ones that tell nothing about the company, no call to action, no reason to purchase or learn more. Just some photo or something with a company name and slogan.

Ad agencies love them because there is no tracking so no one knows how effective they are but the ad agency still wins awards.

Maybe that will be my sales pitch. Start offering sites with almost no information on the home page and very little information to the big brands and charge a mint because they are special and different and need to follow any proven sales techniques.

I dislike these things purely because of the loading time, and because every. single. video page causes my Adobe Firefox plugin container to crash. I tolerate them though, because the web is becoming less of a desktop/laptop medium and more of a touch/streaming media.

Paypal, Ebay, Amazon, and Facebook have global brand recognition. Even if you don't know what they do, you are willing to trust them with your e-mail address. "TimmysAuctionSite.biz", not so much. Timmy needs to sell you on a reason to hand over your e-mail.

Also, the average person automatically trusts a brand if it is mentioned on TV. CNN and MSN can't go 10 minutes without saying the words "Facebook" or "Twitter". So, in the person's mind, these companies can't be a fly-by-night company, so why not just give them some personal information?

      Sheesh!!!

I realize this is a little off-topic, but...

Mobile technology is fine ... if one can use the darn thing. My only mobile device is an S3, which I only really use for texting and phone calls - at the moment.

I do ALL of my word-processing and internet on my laptop. Why? Because the keyboard is massively more user-friendly for my liking, and fortunately I don't need to be on the move too much. I hate (with a passion) the size of smartphone keypads, and touch-style typing (don't mind for texting) and that my fingertips are too large for the size anyway. My S3 fits comfortably into my pocket(s) - a larger one would be too cumbersome. Also I like being able to type on real keys, and write articles/content in "typewriter" fashion.

I love the ergonimics of my laptop and PC; they fitand suit me.

Yes, yes, I know I'll probably (have to) use more and more mobile in the passage of time, but mobile devices are simply too small for me in terms of everything I need to do on the Internet or wordprocessing.

The image draws your attention and funnels you into a deeper level of the site. From a visual standpoint it doesn't look like you have as many options as you actually do. Once you perform the most obvious action you are funneled into a deeper level of marketing tactics for the product or service. It isn't about style as much as it is about functionality. The function to sell you. Effective in my opinion.
