WP - One theme active, while you work on another?

I activated a coming soon theme that has a countdown to launch the website, and then I would like to work in another theme and activate later. Is this possible?

    I haven't tried that yet but if I were you I am going to set a "coming soon" index.html (I may use a script for the timer) while I am working on my current theme. I will place it in my root directory. If I want to see my wordpress homepage, I'll simply visit domainname.com/index.php.

    There is a free plugin out there called Theme Test Drive which will let you work on one theme in the admin while showing another theme to your visitors.

      I just install wordpress in a directory of the main site and hide this directory from the search engines. You can then test out as much as you want without any possibility of doing something that messes up the "real" site.
