The best way to check a domain before buying it

I never buy domains from anyone, when I need a domain I just register one.
However, there is a domain I really want to buy from some one but I have no experience buying a domain this way.

We already agreed on the price. What is the best way to make sure I don't get burnt on this deal? I guess I should check all possible problems with this domain. What is the best way to do that?

Also what is the process?

I'd appreciate some guidance on this.

Check out one of the domain registers and see if they can help. Usually they have domain name buying services. That way, you won't get burned.

Hi Joel, At first check the social portfolio of that buyer and if he is a real business person and you don't get scammed.Check the domain age, backlinks and make sure the domain is not blacklisted. If you want you can use escrow.com for completing the whole process. You also need to check domain register and you can also buy through an auction like flippa.com, sedo.com or godaddy auction but seller needs to be interested though it'll cost some extra money.I hope it helps. Thanks :-)

Joe - I would insist on using an escrow service like Escrow.com. Sedo.com and Afternic.com also have built-in escrow services, but for the lowest fee and best service, Escrow.com is my favorite.

That way both parties are as protected as possible. If the seller is unwilling to use escrow, be very suspicious.

You may also want to verify that he/she is the rightful owner, by having them change something in the WHOIS record for you to see.

It's a good idea to check the domain at http://archive.org to see what the domain was used for in the past. DomainTools.com also has a feature that lets you look back.

If there is any content at all on the domain right now, search google for the domain in quotation marks to make sure you see at least one listing for the site. If not, that may be a strong indication that it was blacklisted.

In addition to the above posts, you can also check the domain history. If it had been used before, check google for some possible records.
