Care to offer your opinion on my landing page?

Hi, group!

I'm working on putting a campaign together for Earth 4 Energy, and I have the rough draft of my landing page together. Would you please take a look and offer whatever comments come to mind? I have zero ego, so ALL advice is appreciated.

The Couture Hippie

(Note: The domain name has nothing to do with the site. It's just a spare domain I had lying around, and I'm using it temporarily for the purpose of showing you what I've done so far. Also, the menu links largely don't work yet.)

I'm wondering if I should make it more of a hypey sales page like How2Material.com, or more of a stern-and-serious-review like HomeMade Solar Power Systems | HomeMade Solar Panels | Residential Solar Power Systems | DIY Solar Power Systems | DIY Solar Panels.

I'll be eagerly awaiting your replies...

Thanks!
Stephanie

I like your landing page - clean and neat. Great beginning. Good luck with your site.

To be honest, this coming from someone who is very much into this type of thing, I would stay on your site. I wouldn't stay on the other two for a second. That's because for me I want information as opposed to being sold to when it comes to this type of thing.

I really like your site so far, I can't give you advice of whether you should be more salesy of not - but personally for me I don't think you should.

You do plan on somehow building a list right?

    ( maybe I missed it )

I'm very interested in the product.

  • Gardenbella: Thank you! "Clean and neat" is exactly the type of website I perfer to see, myself, so it's very encouraging to hear that that's how mine comes across.

Keyaziz: Thank you for the comments! That's two "no's" so far, so maybe I don't need to change my approach much, after all...?

TLTheLiberator: Excellent point. I had one on there, but then I took it off. I'll add it back in...

    THANK YOU!

  • Per the suggestion of TLLiberator and jpaduchak, I added an opt-in box. Should I be concerned that it's below the fold?

Not sure where you're going to put a opt-in graphic like that - above the fold.

Folks will naturally scroll down and see it.

      You could...

      - Either leave it there:

      - Have it pop up when folks try to leave without doing what you want:

      - Have it slide down over the page when folks arrive at your page:

      - Have it as the first thing they see, but your affiliates are not going to be happy about that unless you can prove that you have tracking of opt-ins.

But of course, you'll just have to test to see what works for you.

I am confused as to what is the main goal on that page...
To get subscribers or to sell the solar something?
Above the fold, before I see the opt-in form there are 2 links that take me away from the site to a sales page. If you want sales - then it's OK.
However, if you want to use this page to get people to subscribe to your list, then don't give them any link that takes them away from the page. Lead them straight to the form. And in that case put the form above the fold, or have another, smaller form above the fold, too.

To The Goddess...as a landing page...I like it. I might be a teeny bit more salesy to get the email address and maybe a teeny bit more .....salesy...Ie: "How many times do you dread opening that once a month electric bill? I know I did untill I started to put into some practical coomon senses alternatives"....or something like that...nothing hypey ...just drawing the reader in even further.. in the opening paragraph....but other than that...I think it looks nice.

    • Thanks, GaryEarle! I didn't intend to leave the text the way it is-- I wrote it in about 2 minutes because I'm just using it as dummy text-- so I'll definitely keep your suggestion in mind when I write the real text.

TLTheLiberator: I don't need to worry about making any affiliates happy-- it's not my product. I AM the affiliate. So my question comes down to, do I want to build my list by positioning the opt-in prominently and forcing people to sign up for my report to get to the sales page, or do I want to maximize sales by allowing people to skip my opt-in and go right to the sales page?

Dear, so you are the affiliate.

It can be argued that you'll maximize sales by building your list and then going for sales from those that opt in.

        It's your choice.

  • Pension Guy: I'm much more concerned about sales at this point, but maybe I shouldn't be-- and if that's the case, I'm certainly open to suggestions. I've certainly heard the refrain a time or two that, "The money's in the list."

    What SHOULD I be doing?

(For the record, after sign-up, the opt-in would redirect the visitor to the sales page of the product)

I would be more concerned about giving people quality content. Have an opt-in - write a mini series or add something that people would want to know in this niche. Then make sure you have at least 7 follow up emails to begin with, where you give readers more information about what they need to know in regards to home solar energy and promote your product with a link to it etc.

I would try to focus on quality content and building a list (because well then you can make more sales). The money will come and the sales will happen if you give quality.

I find when I focus on the content, my sales are MUCH better. I got into the habit in the past of getting obsessed about making sales and it would lead me no where.

Quality and value key in my opinion.

Excellent advice, Keyaziz! I can certainly put together a mini-course to be delivered via autoresponder, but, if I do that, will I need to re-do the site altogether to change the focus from the product I'm promoting to the mini-course I'm giving away (and will use to market the product I'm promoting)?

        THANK YOU!

Goddess....maybe this question should be asked....what do they get when the opt in from you?

And I also agree with keyaziz...once you have the list underway...are you giving them some tips on how to save? and then gently promote the product? AFTER youve established some trust?

    OR

Just send them to the sales page from the optin....if thats the case....you'll need just a bit more ...information on the landing page..my opinion....

and the only way to see what method is going to be more successful is to TEST both!

Test and TRack...numbers do not lie

    again...just my opinion

    Steph,

I know about this niche too. Did quite a bit of KW research, built a Squid Lens and a Hub page but haven't done the squeeze/LP routine yet. All in all, your site looks good.

    Two things;

    1) Check your site map link (I get a 404 error)
    2) Consider adding a Favicon (energy looking deal) it might help

      Thanks, Neil!

The links on my menu don't work-- I plan to implement them next.

I was totally unfamiliar with the concept of a "Favicon," so this is definitely something I'll check into!

Is it just me, or are low-competition / reasonable search volume keywords for this niche hard to come by?

  • TLTheLiberator: Uuuuuggggh... I was afraid someone was going to come out and blatently say that! I can certainly see the logic of building my own list.

Does this mean I need to rework the whole site so I'm "selling" my free course and not Earth 4 Energy? And that I have to start paying for an autoresponder?

You could simply test your original process while you're reworking another page & process so that you can split test to see which one works best.

There could be a big diff.

Aweber is only $19.95 and I think Get Response is a couple bucks cheaper.

But you should be sure you can generate visitors first and then you can get a auto responder account.

Excellent plan. So I'll finish the site, write my mini-course, write some articles, and then get to work on different versions of the site. If traffic looks good, I'll sign up with an auto-responder.

Many thanks to everyone that replied!

Okay..testing..and I'm sure you'll get a lot of various opinions....so here is mine

With the articles..you have the ability to send them wherever you want...I would have 2 ..almost identical versions of that landing page...1 being just a review page --a little more content empathizing with their problem once again...with links right to the sales page...and the 2nd page would be just like you have it now...with the optin...submit one article to drive to the sales page....submit 1 article..or articles..to drive to the opt in page...

    yeah I know...pain in the tushie....but ..after a bit..you'll see a pattern...once a pattern emerges....that's the road you follow..

personally...I would hope that the opt in would show better numbers....because once you have greenies on a list.....its not only solar panels you can sell them...but tons of other green stuff....all based on YOUR recommendations...Because you scour the web for only the best and the most useful products!

Testing to many..is a foreign concept....but I"ll repeat myself...its worth the up front aggravation

    Gary

I think the site looks pretty good but I would move the opt in box above the product review or have it so it comes up automatically when you open the page. Another thing I might take out is the $200 cost for panels. I think some people might be turned off by that and leave the page. Of course if you leave it in there you will get a more targeted visitor to the sales page but you want to get the most people to that sales page as possible. I guess you could always split test. Keep up the good work.
    {{ DiscussionBoard.errors[891910].message }}
  • Profile picture of the author DancesWithCode
Well, you would test by using a tracker that allowed you to do split testing between two pages, each with a subtle difference, like a headline change or a graphic change. Whichever one gets the most clicks/opt-ins is the higher/better converting page, and the one you should use going forward. But that doesn't mean you can't continue to improve it by testing other changes after that.

Keep your opt-in box above the fold. Your headline should focus on the benefits to your reader, and speak of a problem and/or solution to their problem. Your free report should speak to this, and you don't have to write it yourself. Just grab some articles, put'em together, and voila' - Free Report!

Also, focus on your free report and the problems it answers, basically tell them why should opt-in for your report, then follow up in your emails and your report with a masked affiliate link to the actual product you're promoting.

TIP! >> ALWAYS build YOUR list FIRST! That way, when you find another product in that niche, you can simply send a broadcast email to the list you've already built, for some quick sales.

Also, you can use an automation service like 1shoppingcart, or an email service like aweber or getresponse. I also own an automation service that I am relaunching this summer. Coincidentally, I am adding the split testing feature I spoke of above. The site is down right now, but it is called ProWebWare.com. This is my first Warrior Forum post, but don't worry, I've been around a while. I hope this helps.
