Do well designed Teespring shirts matter?

You all know this picture and these 2 designs. By dumb luck, I met a friend-of-a-friend who was really good with Adobe Illustrator. So I asked him how these two shirt logos were probably done. He was able to describe the way they were most likely designed in Illustrator, and generally agreed that while these designs were at the level of any skilled Illustrator designer, they probably were above the skill level of 95% of the folks selling shirts on FB.

And if you look at the first 10 or so pages of the top selling shirts on Teeview:
http://teeview.phatograph.com/?filter=sn

.. you rarely see any shirts comparable in complexity to these two shirts above.

So I ask... do high-level Adobe Illustrator skills really matter when it comes to having successful Teespring shirts?

High quality design is one very important element in a slew of important elements of a successful Tee Spring campaign.

You might be able to get away with mid level quality sometimes, but more often than not you need good design.

Good design doesn't simply stand on it's own, mind you.

    This also matters:

    Timing
    Saturation
    Ad Spend
    Reach
    Price
    Options

    Etc.

High quality design matters more than it does not matter.

Yes, GOOD design does matter... even if it's a simple text tee. Don't just come up with an awesome saying/phrase and put it on some arial text.

Make it look GOOD... and ask yourself, would you wear it? Would your cousin wear it? Wife/husband? Friend?

Yes a good design can make you sell tees but thats not necessary that design only matters but if you have good relevant text then your tee can be a best seller. For example FIFA is starting from tomorrow and if your tee says I SUPPORT ____. Then people who support that team can purchase your tee. You can use FB ads for selling

Of course design matters. But there are also other cases where design is great but doesn't matter much. For example selling shirts for a cause or for fund raising. People would buy whatever the design is. If it's just plain selling or business or maybe branding, design is really important. Another thing that can affect your sales is the pricing. I saw $19.99 shirts sell better than $29.00 shirts.

Yes, design does matter! But it's only one of the many factors for a successful shirt campaign. You'll actually see many shirts with a poor design but has a lot of sales. Sometimes, it's all about smart marketing.

I totally agree with this. I think it's all relative. I've seen 1, 2, 3 word average looking fonts sell like hot cakes. I've seen very ugly shirts sell great. If it has a great message that speaks to the audience, it will win every time. Although in some cases, great designs are extremely important as well.

What's the point of having a sig if no one buys from you?

Yes, a design does really matter a lot... even if it's a simple text tee.
Wether choosing a font or image, make sure it is a good one and does make the tshirt stand out loud.

The message that's being displayed is far more important than the design, in my experience. As long as the font looks like it "fits", the images used are at a high resolution and the colors all match, that's usually more than enough.

man the short answer to your question is NO

What matters is who you put the shirt in FRONT OF!!!!!!!!!
    i.e. Traffic!!!

if you put a poorly designed shirt in front of a SUPER HIGHLY TARGETED KEEN TO BUY SOMETHING audience... then you will make money.

    OR

If you put the best designed shirt ever in front of the WRONG audience who has NO MONEY well... you will make nothing.

So? My point is: Is much HARDER to nail "traffic" than to nail design.

You can pay anyone to do any awesome design. that's a commodity. But you can't pay someone to find you the perfect audience/traffic at the RIGHT price. That's the "skillful" part and is not a commodity.

    Conclusion:
    1. Dont focus on design
    2. Focus on your traffic source

do you think a better design would have more chance of going viral though? especially over a 20 day period? than a shitty design with the same message?

At shirts Design have much importance, it creates attractions, but the quality of fabric does also matter. Good quality fabric keep you design for long time at shirt and also keep it visible, it will never dull at quality fabric.

  • I'm not a tee-spring expert but I looked at numbers and some of the best sellers don't have high quality design I suspect the seller hit the right message to the right market. Again, I"m speculating!
