Back to the drawing board!

Hey all so just over a month ago someone on this forum approached me with an offer of being my CPA Mentor, I won't mention names but this guy robbed me of $2100 which has really set me and my family back. I am currently going through the motions of trying to claw it back via action fraud/ visa dispute/ paypal, but anyway I was pretty much ready to give all of this up but I have decided to dig deeper and not get beaten by some scammer.

It's back to the drawing board for me but I need to know that I'm heading in the right direction.... Thus far I have learnt quite a lot about building sites/keyword research etc yet I cannot seem to get any of my sites to rank. This is a problem for me. SEO seems so hit and miss and all the waiting around is disheartening especially after months of link building and social media stuff. Has anyone out there got some clean cut advice on how to rank and get traffic with low to medium competition niche websites? Any advice would be massively appreciated. Harry

Is this person selling anything on this forum? Do they have an ad here?

That's terrible news, I'm really sorry for you and it really saddens me to hear stories like this. Hopefully your bank will be able to get it back for you, I trust you have spoken to them? SEO is somewhat of a "swear word" to me these days, the best means of driving traffic IMO is from Youtube videos...how long that will last, I'm not sure, but if I were you I'd be looking in that area.

Yep really got scammed and it winds me up jus thinking about it, how could I be so stupid! This guy is a real scum bag. Definitely a lesson well learnt.... I am currently experimenting with social media traffic using scheduling software to drive traffic
To small Adsense sites... It's been running for a couple of days so nothing major yet. I've been watching Jay Wessmans videos for a while now and this guy talks about SEO like its nothing. He also makes it look really easy but after sitting there hour after hour trying to build links and all that stuff only to have my site either not move or actually lose rankings is a bit much.

You're not alone, I got scammed back in 2006 out of $5K for useless mentoring. So I feel your pain. I gave up after that for about 3 years then jumped back in and I'm glad I did. Now I'm finally seeing the fruits of my labor.

I do SEO and I can tell you, it is always a moving target. It is hard when you have no road map to follow. I'm not trying to sell you my services but you need to know who your top competitors are for your money keywords and then do what they are doing.

You can find that information by going to numerous sources MOZ, ahref, Majestic SEO, etc. but it's a lot of hard work. Or you can keep doing what you are doing shooting in the dark and hope you get lucky.

There is a lot of good information here. Use this board as a good resource to learn and try to focus. It's very easy to get lost in all of the wild claims. Just find something and see it through. This is not an easy road, but if you stick to it and learn you will eventually make it.

          Best of luck.

Really curious about how he was able to scam you.

As for your niche sites. How many pages of real content do they have? Cause if, after working on them for months, you've only got a dozen or so pages on each then one of your answers is to stop doing so much link building and actually put a lot of content on there that goes after very long tail keywords that tie into your niche. You could also "think" the competition for your niche is low to medium when it's actually higher than that. I see that sort of thing all the time.

If at all possible you can get profitable buying traffic in your niche pursue this. Yes, organic search traffic and free social media traffic is great, but it's unpredictable. Put together a plan to profit buying traffic and you have a business. It's not easy, but it's a great way to build your biz because you don't worry about traffic. As you start generating free traffic just from content in the long run your ROI will only improve.
