well you can make way much more on odesk and just write good letter, thats personal and you can get the job

Why do you want to get paid upfront? If you join oDesk or Elance, you might have to write first and then get paid. Personally I would never pay upfront to anyone if I am doing the business for the first time with them or unless they have solid reputation online or I am well protected by the system.

I find that most people simply run away with the money and never come back with work!

I don't think he meant it to sound that literally...
I believe he simply wants to get paid as soon as the job is done as opposed to waiting a whole month to get paid (or accruing passive income.) At least that's what it sounds like to me.

That is what I am saying - get paid when the job is done. Even I don't believe in waiting for a month to get paid. But usually employers do pay you as soon as the job is finished and in rare cases this kind of waiting is seen.
