If I buy an .org domain, does I have the same chance of ranking high if I had chosen a com domain instead?, or are .com domains considered more authority in google?

Sincerely
Karl

I am not a SEO expert, but I would like to add that .com domains are easy to remember and go for a .com

I don't think that .org will rank higher than .com

Incorrect, depending on how saturated a niche may be, an .org has as good of a chance a .com or .net. I've got many org's beating out .com's who didn't know how to build a decent webpage. Just a fyi

If a .com isn't available for the keyphrase I'm targeting, I tend to go for a .org or .net.

For some reason I've not had a lot of success with .info sites. I don't think Google likes them as much.

So long as you get your SEO right and provide good content (which is googles preference) then I doubt that buying a .org address would be detrimental from a search engine perspective but from a human point people seem to click on a .com before .org (well I certainly do anyway ).

I have several .org's and they do just fine. I tend to choose .org when I'm doing a more "helpful" kind of thing, like environmental or education niches, BUT I'm sure this is just a subconscious preference of mine and they would do well no matter what they are used for

Also you have the slight edge where people tend to look at .org's as less "commercial" for whatever reason, and maybe trust you more. You can even try it: say out loud "stop smoking dot com" and then say out loud "stop smoking dot org", you can feel the "dot org" has something that gives you that confidence for some reason.

Personally i use the manipulation of .org sites to my advantage. In most cases they outrank .com domains even if they are harder to remember (only slightly).

I never ever choose .net nor .info or .co.uk etc etc it's always .com or .org.

an .org domain is treated the same as a .com domain. Why Google will place more weight on .org rather than a .com?

I don't think so.. A company sells something doesn't mean it's not valuable to the community...

i don't think it makes a difference from SEO point of view...com or .net or .org are all treated same for SEO and content and backlinks is all what matters most to search engines.I tend to agree with hmbehrens in "believing more" in .org domains than commercial .com sites.I have seen people with .org doing just fine in same niche area as other .coms.

Just purchased a .net domain name from a broker who also had the .org name for 4x as much. Thought that was interesting (and maybe a mistake). He told me that .com and .org always go for more than .net. Had never heard that about .org before...

I have done testing on .org domain names when it comes to search engine results and clickthrough. For many things, the .org had worked better for me. My thought it that seeing a .org domain makes people think the information is free and more reliable.

Funny you should ask this question, because just 2 days ago I was watching a presentation by Nathan Anderson, who has developed a sophisticated analysis software that track these things, and he specifically pointed out the overwhelming evidence as reported by the software, as to the strength of the .org extension with search engines. I have since added a few to my portfolio as a result of his findings.

.com seems to be the most preferred if you plan on selling your site, otherwise it won't matter.

Most of these comments are anecdotal at best. There is a lot of controversy on whether extensions matter for the purposes of SEO. My experience is they do not matter much for a well optimized site. I will say that humans prefer and remember .com the best.

For the most part it boils down to relevant onsite content and backlinks from high authority sites. I have .info sites that have outranked .coms.

Definatly go with a .com domain name. It's not that much more expensive (if any) and it is simply given more authority that .org or .net. It's not so much with Google - I have a .org site ranking #1 in Google and Yahoo - it's simply a matter of preference of you and your clients. It's a no-brainer for a person to type in your domain with .com at the end. It's a little less obvious if it's a .org or .net.

If you really want a domain that's already taken then go with .org or .net. NEVER go with .info even though it's 'cheaper'. In the long run those extra dollars will be worth thousands or even millions.

Yes I think it "does"! How ever why not go with the ol' .com. It is well recognized by all the web and it only takes a little thought to come up with a domain name to use it. Google doesn't care.

I think many people are missing one of the most important points here.

Very often the .com is not available. BUT the .org is.

Also, this "taken" .com may not even be being used.

So, if it's a good name, that makes it even more of a possibility to use a good .org domain name.
