Back in the day toplists were quite popular. And you could easily find toplist in any niche, join and start getting targeted traffic right away. Depending on the script used this was for traffic and not SEO. Today blogs have blogrolls but I don't see them being utilized the same way and I never see any linktrade requests here (or other sites I visit).
