Would you tell your Grandmother exactly what you do?

When I tell people what I do for a living, I always get questioned further. My first response is never good enough. I used to think it was because people were genuinely seeking understanding but im beginning to think it's more skepticism and with a raised eyebrow.

You all know that we have a reputation that's not always positive. I'm curious:

How proud are you about what you do online?

How honest are you with what you do?

Have you ALWAYS been proud and honest...from day 1?

    I see this as a 2-sided coin . . .

Do people genuinely not understand what you do? . . . or . . .

Do you not communicate what you do so that others can easily understand?

Every business owner ought to be able to say exactly what their business does in 15 seconds or less. Can you meet this test?

In answer to your questions: Extremely , Completely, and Yes.

Hhmm...I'm not really sure how you came to that conclusion when I never said I was dishonest or not proud of what I do, because I am. Perhaps you're saying IF i was proud, i should have no problem getting family to understand what i do immediately without them being concerrned about things being legit??

Btw, you didn't answer any of the questions.

Try this. Next time someone asks you what you do tell them you broker human organs on the black market. Then, after they recover from the shock tell them you sell stuff online. All of a sudden being an Internet marketer will take on a huge air of respectability.
Ha! Love it! Not sure I could say that to granny, but I do love it.

Thanks for answering. You're right. I'm almost certain it has less to do with my audience and more to do with this ^ ^ ^

Steve I also think it has something to do with the perception people already have of IM...I mean before we even open our mouths to tell them what we do.

Does it sometimes feel as though you have to reverse their negative perception FIRST?

      Love that idea !

If somebody seems that they are not capable of understanding me (about any topic, not just IM) or not willing to understand, then why should I struggle to make them understand ? To make myself feel frustrated and angry ?

Unless the person is paying my bills, buying my groceries or giving me some kind of benefit, their "understanding" is not required.

A lot of people didn`t understand what Thomas Edison was trying to do either, but how many people today have electricity and light inside their homes ? And at the same time, he made some cash and got himself in the history books.

Don`t worry about what people think or "understand"... they will think whatever they want to think regardless of how much you try to explain. Just enjoy the fruits of your labor with somebody who understands or at least does not obligate you to "explain what you do".

I understand the point. I would be here all day if I began to identify the people I'm talking about, but my spouse would be one of those people who has a negative perception of IM, unfortunately.

Just to emphasize, I say grandmother because I'm pretty sure it's tough for most of us to NOT care what people think who mean so much.

I still wonder what % of IMers don't feel the least bit guilty when they go into details with relatives about what they do day in and day out.

I know what you mean, bro.

Mine also had a negative perception of IM when I got started.

She thought that I was going to be taken advantage of by dishonest people selling me eBooks and such that would not help me. She thought that the only people making money online were big corporations who had lots of money for advertising OR people who were very sneaky and dishonest.

Her perception changed when I started getting regular checks in the mail every month from Clickbank, Amazon, etc.

Now, the problem with her is that if I DON`T get checks in the mail, she starts asking me questions, and thinks I might be goofing off and not working hard enough.

But... let me ask you a question : Does your spouse give you benefits ? Mine gave me some benefits last night, and right now she is preparing lunch... plus she likes to earn her own money too, so its not all bad.

As long as your spouse is giving you some "benefits" then no worries. When you start making more money, consistently, she will most likely change her perception of IM / MMO.

Vid Yo, I should add he was a business man, but one who never used a PC.
However he read a lot, even when he was almost 100 years old (until he passed away).
I was/am very proud of him.

Why would they feel the least bit guilty?

I come from a long line of entrepreneurs. Grandma taught me to be one, so why wouldn't she be proud?

As for the general public, I say I'm a "secret agent."

Grandma isn't the one you should be concerned with. It's the mug you see in the mirror. How do they feel about what you do?

A psychiatrist and a proctologist decided to go in together as partners on a new building rather than each build his own clinic. The only difficulty turned out to be what they should tell people who inquired about their new partnership.

"Simple" seemed to be the best way to go, so they just decided to tell people they did "odds and ends."

I used to question some things back when I was promoting CPA offers like crazy. When I first started out the industry appeared to be legit, so I went all out with Adwords, Yahoo and Bing. Then a few months later the "free trials" that used to be 30 days started shrinking to 21 days, 14 days, 7 days, etc.

I was shocked when I found out that most of these offers were sucking people into continuity offers that were extremely difficult to stop. No one would answer the phones when customers would call in to cancel or if they DID answer, most of the time they'd be placed on hold for what seemed like an eternity.

How do I know? Because not only did I promote them, but my wife also joined a diet offer through an infomercial and it took her 3 months to get the payments stopped. Actually, the bank had to intervene because the company simply wouldn't do it. From what I understand there were a couple hundred customers at her bank that got taken.

If you're actually reviewing products, giving honest reviews, doing your best to help people and being honest all the way through the process, I don't see any reason to be ashamed at all. On the other hand, if it's a scummy product and you're aware of it from the beginning, no, I wouldn't want either of my Grandmother's (both are deceased) to know.

As fate would have it, I lost my Adwords account shortly after those offers took a turn for the worst. It hurt really bad financially at the time, but it was really a blessing.

Just to be clear, not all CPA offers are bad. The industry has really had to clean up its act since then. Still, it's not something I'd want to put all of my efforts into.

My family (including the wife) are happy as long as I'm bringing in money although they all get concerned about how much time I spend working online. My friends, well that is a different matter. I used to get a kick out of showing them how much I was making, but that was a flaw in my personality. Now I keep quiet about what I do, if someone asks I say I'm an information engineer, if they question me further I tell them it's far too boring to talk about.

Refer to Joe Stewart's post...that's why. I completely agree with the 'man in the mirror' suggestion. That's the first person to be concerned about. Still, family matters.

There will always be skeptics and haters, especially if you work online or own your own business. Many are jealous of the perceived freedom that you must have by 'working at home', imagining that it's all lounging on the beach all day and having big fat paychecks rolling in. Most will not believe that you work hard if you work from home or commute, when in fact many of the largest corporations employ freelancers and tele commuters, if only to save costs. Just be strong in your own convictions that what you are doing is right and ignore everyone else.

Yes, you're definilely right and people who judge you too.
And the reason is simple: "every body creates his reality"
You have to decide if you want to make your own way or just walk on those already made.
I think that's a huge step you have to face(no one will, can do it for you).
If you want to make your way(and i hope that's the case), just follow great advices given above....

Most people who ask me.....well I do not get into the specifics because it is confusing for them.

Basically, I tell them I do Consulting through a Newsletter of mine and that I teach and sell services that enable people to increase the Productivity and Profitability of their small businesses.

        Something like that.

        They usually respond , " Oh cool " !

I don't have any living grandparents, but my mom knows what I do and I have no problem telling her about my work. She doesn't always understand the technical side of it and is still in awe that I'm able to make so much money without working a "real job," but I'm not ashamed to tell anyone what I do for a living.

As far as being proud, I'm proud of what I've accomplished so far, but feel I've still got a long ways to go. I've been honest about what I've been doing since day 1. There's nothing shameful or dishonest about what I do, so I have no problem talking about it.
