How To Get Images Without Paying (yes, FREE)

These images are all FREE to use. Most, if not all, can be used without attribution, but with restrictions such as you may not use Images for pornographic, unlawful or other immoral purposes, or in a way that can give a bad name to depicted persons, or to imply endorsement of products and services by identifiable persons, brands, organisations, etc.

READ THE Terms of Service and License ON EACH SITE SO YOU UNDERSTAND THE RISK.

For example, just because the images are deemed copyright free or have a model release, that does not mean it is true. The uploader might have made a mistake AND the site will not be responsible. The owner of the image could come after you.

With that out of the way, here's how you find free images from 5 sources:

1. Go to Google and click Images. Type in the search box (in quotes):

"I grant anyone the right to use this work for any purpose, without any conditions, unless such conditions are required by law" [enter keyword]

2. Go to Google and type in the search box:

site:morguefile.com "You are allowed to copy, distribute, transmit the work and to adapt the work. Attribution is not required." [enter keyword]

Go to the following sites and type in your keyowrd in their search box:

3. wpclipart.com

4. pixabay.com

5. iconfinder.com

You can also go to this site: CC Search.

Make sure that the check boxes labeled "use for commercial purposes" and "modify, adapt, or build upon" are ticked.

Most Creative Commons images require attribution so please do make sure you follow the CC license terms. CC0 is basically the only CC license that does not require attribution.

If you make decent money on your site stock photo subscriptions are the way to go. I use depositphotos.com, istock (they have reasonable subscriptions as of April this year), thinkstock, and shutterstock.

You can also do an advanced search in Google images and select the licensing option at the bottom which grants commercial use. I do this once in a while too.

Be VERY careful using Google's image search. Google does not grant the free license, nor do they in any way verify the images in the search results are actually free. If you find a picture you like, go to the website where the picture is on and do your own research to make sure it is actually free. If someone slaps you for copyright infringement Google will not back you up in any way, shape or form.

I agree with your first point. Buy a subscription to a stock photo site. You can get great quality photos for a few bucks. I buy my images from Fotolia. Plus, I know I'm not stealing anyone's work.
