Anyone care to offer some recommendations based on their own experiences? PHPBB is the only one i have played with a few years ago and seem to remember it being ok. I am guessing there are some pretty good ones around now, any thoughts or recommends??

Thanks in advance

Alan

Any decent hosting CPANEL will have one click installs for the most popular forum softwares. I know Godaddy does.

So does Bluehost. they have one click installs via MoJo marketplace and it is free with hosting.

I just look and they offer forums with these scripts:

      Vanilla Forums
      Version 2.1

      Simple Machines Forum
      Version 2.0.7

      MyBB
      Version 1.6.11

      phpBB
      Version 3.0.12

      PunBB
      Version 1.4.2

      Hope this helps

I have about 4-5 active forums, upon my experience ,here is my recommendation
    paid/premium solutions
vBulletin(Scalable, powerful functions, proven and being used by most of top forums)
Xenforo(Created by the developers who build the vBulletin software, newily arrived but solid features to consider)

    Free Software
    PHPBB(Scalable,free extensions,SEO friendly,advanced spam control)
Vanilla forum(In-build Private forum functions- best for private membership forum controls and mobile friendly)
    Punbb(Light weight,in-build SEO functions,used minimum resources,best for shared hosting,but not mobile friendly)

SMF (simple machines forum) is one I have used and I found it to be pretty good. There are a hell of a lot of themes to choose from and plenty of plugins. It's also available on cpanel as a one click install.

SMF isn't bad at all and I built up quite a great little community with that a while back. It was spamming that got to me in the end became too much work. But yes I'd vote for SMF.
