Twitter: Auto Following Then Unfollwing = Suspension

This from ReadWriteWeb:

Using third party software to systematically add a large number of social connections each day, then break those connections with anyone who doesn't reciprocate, is a method used by some number of Twitter users to create an appearance of legitimacy for subsequent new connections. Twitter's Doug Williams said last night that such practices will now risk account suspension.

Thanks for sharing that with us Anna. It's something I had only recently done myself (auto unfollowing those who don't follow me), so it's good to know.

  • Finally, no more twits on twitter

Seriously, come on, basic business principles. Provide great quality service that provides great value (that people want/need) at a great price, you cannot fail with this principle.

Or you could try the equivalent of walking up and down the street shoving flyers in everyone's faces HOPING they buy something???

Its more like they follow People so they can Shove their face on other Peoples Flyers. they always have the option to unfollow. but i guess thats where they like their Face to be.

And about auto follow and unfollow Large amounts is always a good idea

But it says "Large Amounts," so people are still safe auto following about 20 an hour.

Whether or not you've been doing this... or agree with it or not... it's better to be informed that suddenly find your account suspended without a clue about why.

I've been telling people this for awhile now.
Yes, it looks like Twitter is finally going public with what it's already been doing.

Great information thanks for sharing. I am not using that method, so all should be good on the home front for me.

      Good.

I do not auto follow people back. I only follow people that tweet on topics I am interested in.

Almost 1/3 of my notices of new followers are from people following me and unfollowing when I do not follow back.

      Automation makes it easier (worse).

If you want more followers, find a trending topic and post useful information. People searching for the topic will follow you if they find it useful.

Doing this will extablish yourself topic expert and they will be more likely to keep following you.

Great to hear. Now if they can have it that you cannot send out new stories (every hour on the hour).

Twitter was used 99% for spamming. So no surprise here

i have to be honest that i am also really only on twitter to do business.
worse, i like the way it is a sort of live classified.
i do know that a lot of the guys that i originally made friends with in my early days unfollowed me as soon as i started to tweet business.
now here is what i think that twitter should do.
    1. i think they should not allow links to be posted. by doing this it would force people that really have an interest in that persons "links", to the website, and then go from there.
    or
    2. perhaps twitter should have some sort of charge that would then allow that person to tweet that specific link, but he would have paid to tweet it for 30 days or something.
    3. maybe have a split system where if you want to tweet links then you are on another timeline.

i personally have made a decision to stop sending links, and only talk about the product or related stuff. if the person reading my tweets then have a vague interest in my product, then they will have to come to my website via my profile.
hopefully this will not only save me from being banned, but also keep my tweeting a happy and plesant experience.
i do agree that sometimes i can wait 5 minutes before i even see a real person tweeting. those of you sending all those same-old-same-old should start to use your noggin a bit

I use a program to go and manually unfollow all the people who dont follow me,and also to follow the people that I have not decided to follow yet.

    Do you follow??? LOL

Is that allowed? I was trying to get over the 2000 following limit.

I have built up to around 2000 following me and I am following around 2000 all manually,I am scared of using tools incase I got suspended or something.

But if their are any tools you suggest I use then please suggest them.

    cheers

All the more reason why you should not use many of those "Auto Follow/NoFollow" sites. Automation has it's place and there are many times when human interaction should be involved.

It is a social site and called that for a reason.... If I follow or unfollow someone it is done manually by my own hands. If I send a DM then it is done manually by my own hands. Many times I will remove someone for sending those "fake auto dm's" because the fact is if you can not take 30 sec to send me a personal message then do not bother to send me a message at all...

I Think Automation DM/Tweets are Fine with twitter. You control the choice of following or not.

of course if mr internet marketer chooses to auto tweet every min. then thats his bad.

But for those that Send auto tweets/DM's with informative content every hour, now thats what i appreciate

Automation itself is fine with twitter as long as it is not abused, that is why they allow API access and for people to create apps..

Personally myself though I do not do any auto DM's and for those that send me auto DM's they normally get removed. As I said if you can not spend 30 sec to post a DM to me then I have no need for you to follow me. If you are following me just to post auto DM's and auto Tweets then I see no use in you following me because the fact is I am not going to click on your links.

If you take the time to post a real message yourself to me personally then I will be more opt to click on your links if it is something that interest me..

You Get Banned For Sending Auto DMs?

I have set mine to "Hey, Thanks For The Follow"
          Would that hurt too?

I'm glad Twitter have finally got their act together on this. There are a number of people who have been using the site like a machine gun in a crowded room, thank god they'll be soon be sorted!

Why not take the time and send me a personal message instead of an auto DM ??? Every single DM I have sent has always been personally typed and sent by myself and not some auto system using the API...

Well, I get like 10-20 followers on most days. So, it's not very feasible to send the DM to everyone, everyday. I mean, Twitter doesn't allow mass sending (Well, any way that's a good thing).

    Great post!

I dont actually auto follow though as there is way too many spammers around that i wouldnt want associated with me. Secondly there is way too many porn related that again would look bad for me. So please dont do it - spend an extra 10 minutes a day on your twitter account keeping the quality going it is like just having dodgy email addresses on your mailing list.

Treat your followers like your second mailing list and it will make you money!

Well, I have auto-follow on but it doesn't seem to make any difference.

I use buzzom.com to follow back. It shows following and followed stats. So, it's easy to sort through.

      Great tool I must say.

I actually think automation is great PROVIDED you use it to add value. I hate spam but if there's a way to automate good tweets on good relevant content to your niche, that's the way to go in my opinion.
I tried it and my followers absolutely LOVE it. 1,000 followers a week, every week, to be precise. I'm actually providing value for them, I just don't sit by the keyboard for hours on end doing so.

I usually just delete these auto DMs without reading them- usually they are either "Thanks for the follow" or some affiliate link.

I also feel put off and don't tend to follow when I visit someone's Twitter page and the whole page is full of Tweets from the last 10 minutes and there are multiple pages of Tweets just from that day alone. It is like some people have nothing else to do all day except continually live every minute of their life through Twitter

    Cheers,
    Suzanne

That's not even an effective way to connect with the people. People who do it end up whith thousands of followers and flood of tweet spam. Those who auto follow you most likely auto follow thousands of others as well and are in the same situation. Therefore, your link will rarely get clicked
