New and unsure where to start?

Hello,

I am new to affiliate marketing and I am unsure where to start. I have begun an E-learning course on Twist and I am now at the stage of picking a niche. I have read different things, some say pick a niche and build around that whilst others are saying find a concern people have and build around that. There is so much information I dont know how to blog or whether to do a blog or static website. Keyword research I am finding very confusing and all of the keywords I am looking at are 'high' competition.

My question in short is how would you suggest I get started with picking a profitable niche that isnt too saturated and would you suggest a blog review site or static info site for someone who is COMPLETELY new to creating any sort of webpage?

Thank you !

    Hi,

and welcome to the warrior forum.

My first advice is to ask yourself how badly you want this to be a success. Reason for this is because i want you to write it down and use it as your motivation each day. The journey is long with many highs and lows. Be realistic in your approach. I found setting daily targets each helped me to remain focused. We certainly dont want you to be the 97% that quits when it gets tough. We want you to succeed, I WANT YOU TO SUCCEED.

As for finding a profitable niche then I suggest you find something you may have an interest in or something that has a strong following. There are loads of tools you can use to help you....

    Google keyword search
    Market sumerai software

I can go into detail with you about this as I got a few ideas and most of them worked.

pm if you otherwise good luck

    Owen

Don't be too afraid of high competition. Sometimes people will seek out a low-competition area only to discover that it's not competitive for a reason--there's no money in it.

I would say instead choose a niche based on your skills and strengths. What are you good at and what kind of people can you help?

I will double the above - competition = money. I there's competition, there is money to be made there. Instead of getting scared, you should concentrate yourself how to beat your competitors and be the best in your niche!

Any questions - just let me know!

There's also potential to be very disastrous for most people. High competition can also lead to negative ROI very fast!

Maybe it's a good thing the OP is scared, or should I say cautious? Beating high competition is very rare and very hard to do. Maybe he doesn't have $5,000 of testing budget to see whether high competition keywords would work or not?

To the OP. It's best to start off with Low to Medium competition KW's before going to high competition.

I advise you not to choose your niche according to "keywords".

What "niche-selection" all boils down to - in one sense - is whether you want to think about "the size of the pie" or "the size of your slice of the pie".

In my opinion, many people make the fundamental mistake of making decisions on the basis of the size of the pie. To me, this seems deeply misguided. What matters to me is the size of my slice of the pie, because that's what feeds me and pays my mortgage and bills every month. I don't want the extra effort of getting near those huge pies with crowds of people all over them. It's far easier for me to feed myself on large slices of smaller pies, and I eat a lot more that way.

The most profitable niche <---- more thoughts here, if they help.

This isn't such an important question, if you want to make money through affiliate marketing. What matters is how you build your list.

Here's the "key point": to earn significant, long-term money from affiliate marketing, and to build a real business, you need to do three things ...

    (i) Keep your potential customers returning to the sales page (because not so many people buy anything much at their first visit to a sales page, as you already know!);

    (ii) Make increasing sales (ideally at progressively higher prices) to the same "captive audience" who regularly rely on and trust your recommendations;

(iii) Establish the credibility and trust necessary to do both the above by earning's people respect as a provider of niche-related information.

In affiliate marketing, these are the big income-determining things. In terms of what you earn, these three things are simply "what it's all about". But without building email lists, of course, you can't do any of the three and you'd just be throwing away almost all the traffic you ever generate that doesn't buy anything immediately (which is, inevitably, almost all of it). It's almost like trying to run a bath without putting the plug in first: you're losing most of what you manage to attract.
What kind of way to run a business would that be?

What are the best ways to promote click bank products?

Is it a good idea to spend some time on building a mailing list ?

Learn while you are on the journey. The single most important piece of advice I can give you is to act now and fail and learn during the journey. If you have an idea, pursue it to the fullest and learn along the way.

    There is no shortcut.

The only way you will learn is to keep reading. I know it may be a slow process, but eventually you will start to understand and start implementing.

Also seems very hard for most people to accept. Probably due to so many "advising" otherwise.

Alexa's pie analogy is exactly what I tell newbies, only not nearly so succinctly.

I would love to see actual data on the number of successes who started small vs jumping into a niche they couldn't compete in. That would be interesting.

Perfectly stated Brent. And to be honest, there are not many successes jumping into a high competitive niche, very very few and far in between. I was one of them that made that mistake jumping into the health insurance niche thinking I would profit a high ROI on Adwords in just a short time. Talk about disastrous.

Well, that mistake cost me dearly. Lesson learned. All because I was stupid enough to take advice and believed a self proclaimed *expert delivering nothing but false promises, also who should not be giving that type of advice to newbies AND struggling IMer's.

Clarity is a HUGE part of IM success. I hope this post brings some clarity. It's so simple when you know it -- and darn difficult when you don't! I owe my mentors a world of thanks for bringing this clarity.

IM is actually pretty simple: you can sell only one of two things:

    1. Products
    2. Services

    That's it!

And selling products or services online happens in the same basic way for everyone, no matter what they're selling:

    Traffic > Opt-in page > Autoresponder series (or e-zine) > Sales page

That's it! It's just that simple. (We IMers tend to overcomplicate things.)

But no matter what your niche is, or whether you're selling a product or a service, do you know what your business model is?

A business model is the framework or skeleton of your business. Essentially there are three types of online business models:

    1. Membership-based model

A membership-based business model allows you to build a community of people (your members) who are as passionate about your subject as you are. Your membership fees can be monthly or annual, but either way, you're building recurring, passive income.

There are a lot of resources and information out there to help you build a membership-based business if you're interested in doing this.

    2. Product-based model

Selling products allows you to maximize your time and effort by selling items over and over again. This can be hard goods or it can be information products. Information marketing is it's own business model under the product-based model. Information marketing allows you to take your brain to the bank by creating a product ONCE based on what you know and selling it over and over again.

Affiliate marketing falls under both models. You can choose to market either products or services as an affiliate.

    3. Service-based model

Selling services can be great for 1) generating quick cash (as in the case of article writing or video producing) and 2) establishing your expertise and getting testimonials.

However, in the long run, your goal should be to offer services at a PREMIUM. The biggest advantage of IM is LEVERAGE. You're able to leverage your time, money and expertise exponentially online. We all have just 24 hours each day. Time to get ruthless about what you expect for those hours you spend in IM each day. Expect more of yourself and more from your business friends, clients, partners, etc.

What results are you getting for those hours you spend online each day? Ultimately, your services should be at the bottom of your funnel and cost the most since they involve your time and personal attention. (We all have a limited amount of time each day.)

The fun (and confusion) comes in with all of the endless mix-and-match possibilities of the above models. If you're just starting or still struggling to make money, keep it simple:

    Pick just ONE!

    1. Pick ONE niche. (Something you're interested in and know something about.)

    2. Pick ONE target market for your product or service. (Who will buy what you're offering? The more specific you are, the more you narrow it down, the more successful you'll be.)

    3. Pick ONE business model.

Now that you're clear about what business you're in, FOCUS! (And stop buying any info not related to your niche and target market, period!)

    F -- Follow
    O -- One
    C -- Course
    U -- Until
    S -- Successful

And remember: build a list, Build a List, BUILD A LIST!

In IM, it's easy to put the cart before the horse. Take a deep breath, step back and consider what type of business you REALLY want. Don't worry about getting traffic or buying that expensive traffic product until you know 1) what your business model is, 2) what niche you're in and 3) WHO your target market is!

Successful business people will tell you that MARKETING is more than half the effort that's needed for success anyway. So pick a niche, target market and business model. Then spend most of your time and effort marketing it.

If you DON'T have a solid plan or system, THAT'S when it's hard. A good system will shave YEARS (and save you big $$$) off of your learning curve

That's why I recommend investing in at least one good, comprehensive IM course (or mentor who will give you such a system) instead of jumping from one $37 e-book to the next. A lot of people here complain about not being able to make any money. But neither are they willing to invest in their business. (Buying a random bunch of $37 e-books doesn't count.)

The best thing I ever did was invest in a comprehensive IM course aimed at REAL business owners, not just other IM wannabes. Yes it was $1500. (It's no longer available.) But it was truly some of the best A-Z IM info I ever bought. Everything else I've learned (from the $37 e-books) since has simply been plugged into this system.

My two best recommendations for phenomenal IM training programs are Ali Brown's Elevate program (ElevateBizTraining.com) and Jeff Walker's Product Launch Formula (ProductLaunchFormula.com)

Get a solid plan or system and then work the plan!

    Hope this helps!

I like both Alexa's answer and Nightengale's... Actually, I think Nightengale beat me to the point I wanted to raise - which is - settle on a business model first. This is probably the most confusing to beginners, because rarely are the various strategies laid out clearly for people to understand.

And, as several others pointed out... keep reading and learning - you'll soon learn to recognize who in these forums has the info you want to pay attention to.

Start at the beginning with a clear understanding of your business model.

Decide upon the niche within your market you would like to build your online business, then dig deeper into sub-niches.

After you have decided upon your sub-niche, you need to create a plan of action with SMART goals and deadlines.

Read as much as you can here on the Warrior Forum. Learn to love the "SEARCH" button on the navigation bar and use it so you don't look stupid or lazy when you ask a question that has been asked over 1,000 times.

And, my final bit of advice would be for you to TAKE ACTION and BUILD A LIST as you grow your online business.

Whatever you do, make sure you build a simple website, and capture leads to build a list. I've been doing this for 10 years and I always regret NOT doing that from the very beginning. I would've had 300,000 subscribers by now making a few thousand a month just off affiliate sales.
