Can someone in the know please help me on this aMember question

Could I please call on your good selves to offer a little advice
For my upcoming launch next month I need a membership area. I had been advised aMember was good for what I need so I emailed them some questions.
This is the answer that puzzles me. First let me tell you how I would think the process would go ...
I will be using PayDotCom to handle the payments. So from the sales page I would expect someone to click to buy, then be taken to paydotcom to pay and then be taken to aMember to create their membership details to access the members area.
However aMember's reply to one of my questions states that thats not how their system works. They said that customers create their member details first and then they pay.
To me that doesnt seem right ??
I read a lot of people using aMember so can anyone either tell me if thats correct but its a fine way to do it or its not correct.
