What do these new forum icons mean?

13 replies
Maybe I'm the only one that hasn't figured out what the new icons and text colors mean.

I have an idea on some of them, but others I don't.

Would someone who knows care to comment on each one? I've added numbers just to make the discussion easier. Also, numbers 11, 12, and 13 represent post title colors (if you're color blind you may not notice the differences).

Please feel free to add other icons if I've missed some.

I really hope a mod or someone associated with the new site will speak up. I apologize if this is covered elsewhere - please give a link if so. Thanks.

    Good question, I always wondered what they meant as well. I've figured out a few however.

    1 = A regular thread that you have seen.
    2 = A thread that you have not yet opened, or there is another post in that thread that you have not seen.
    3 & 4 Are the same as above, except it represents a popular or trending thread.
    5 = A thread that has been jumped to another section.
    6 = A thread started by you
    7 = A closed thread
    8 = A closed, moderated thread.
    9 = I think this one is a re-opened thread
    10 = A locked thread.

    Honestly, they aren't nearly as intuitive as the old ones were. Here's my guess, and it's just a guess.

    1. A thread with no new posts
    2. A hot thread with new posts
    3. A hot thread with no new posts
    4. A hot thread with new posts
    5. Haven't got a clue
    6. A thread you are participating in (but not a hot thread)
    7. A closed hot thread
    8. Haven't got a clue what the difference between a black and red closed thread is
    9. Haven't got a clue what a red closed thread with an arrow means
    10. A locked thread that is not a hot thread
    11., 12, 13. Haven't got a clue what the different text colors mean

    Could someone also tell me why they seem to randomly show up? I often see just the old icons and then sometimes a mix of both. I just logged out, cleared my cookies, and all I seem to see is the old icons.

    12 seem to be threads I've opened today, comment or no comment the color stays the same for me
    13 are threads I've opened but didn't comment on yesterday

    There appears to be some random element to it. The star, for example, does not always show for me on threads I have posted in, and the link colors don't mean what I thought they meant.

    With the intermittent failure of the search function, it's getting hard to follow threads you've posted in. I suspect the two problems are related.

      ... and there still is no icon for threads you have participated in that are hot threads. The new icon set is little more than decorative graphics to match the new site design. Not much usefulness for navigation.

        Surely the admin team that introduced the various icons, the text coloring and the bolding into the new design for a reason. But it's been difficult for me to figure out exactly what each means partly due to the apparent inconsistency with the way they show up (or don't show up) in the thread.

        My hope was that someone from the design team would comment on or explain to the members what the intention is for each icon and color so that we don't have to speculate on their meanings and application. This could be done effectively in a sticky or even a FAQ of some kind that all new members could be directed to. Such an area would also be a logical place to post general forum rules that apply to all forum sections. Such a "starting point" wouldn't preclude additional rules that applied to the sub forums.

        Communication from the new admin team seemed positive for a short while during the design changes . . . maybe less positive lately.

        Nevertheless, this thread was not meant as a gripe . . . just a plea for more information. Those of us that post often and care about this forum need to understand how it works.

    Well, you already have a thread exactly like this in the suggestion forum where it belongs and where it is more likely to get answered by admin, if they actually know the answer, which they probably don't. I already asked there in Suggestions for an icon to show participation in hot threads and Alaister was confused at what the icon should do, so as I suggested, they are little more than design elements and do not function in the same manner that the original icons did and as most forum icons do.

    Due to the fact that a lot of people are color blind and that there is so little difference in text colors, text color changes should not be used in place of the way the original icons were used. You could tell instantly what the status of a thread was and whether or not it was one where you have participated.

      Ok ... great. Where's the icon for "You have posted in this thread" and the thread is a "hot thread"?

    These two images are icons for threads that I have posted in and from what I can tell there is no indication that I have posted there.
