Aweber Help - Trying To Stop Double Opt In

Ok I need some help because I am really confused here. I was reading it is better to have single opt in for your squeeze page so that's what I tried to do.

When I log in to my aweber account and I go to:

List Options > List Settings >Require Opt In Web Forms I have it turned to off.

I went back to my squeeze page, entered my email, and I got taken to the custom URL that I put in, great. Then I looked at subscriber list and saw my email but says "Conformation Pending" which I thought I turned off. Sure enough I got an email asking me to opt in?

Am misunderstanding something here? I thought that is exactly what I turned off.

  • I know it's silly... But, did you click Save Form at the bottom after clicking the Off button?

Also, did you wait 5-10 minutes before checking your form. Sometimes it takes a few minutes for things to change over.
  • Yeah I did. I guess I'm just trying to figure out how do I get this to happen:

    1. Person signs up on squeeze page with their email
    2. They are taken directly to the offer
    3. My first follow up message sends

And then thats it, is that possible?
  • Once you select double opt-in, you cannot change to single opt-in.

    • This is just nonsense. Aweber has no such rule. Not only do they not have that rule, they start all campaigns as Double Opt-In...

Here's how you change from Double to Single Opt-In...

      1. Log In at Aweber
      2. Click the List Options tab, then List Settings
      3. Click Confirmed Opt-Ins
      4. Scroll down and click the ON|OFF button till the Off Box is RED
      5. Click Save Settings at the bottom of the page.
      6. Wait 5-10 minutes before testing.

    • Uhh.......
    • That's the right answer. You'll have to create a new list and make it single opt in from the get go.

  • Why does it say turn off / on then?
  • I don't make the rules, they do.

single optin is something very important when building a list
  • Thanks guys, I didn't realize about the waiting. I was literally going back and forth between on and off and testing under like a minute time, now that I waited its working.

So to confirm, you CAN Change the opt in option

    • Keep in mind too that if you have it set to single optin and you are testing it, you are probably opting into the form several times in a short amount of time. Aweber will see this as a bunch of optins coming in from the same IP address and will switch it over to double optin (they call it throttling) for an hour or so to "protect your account" from being spammed.

Just give it an hour or so and it will go back to single optin.
    • Not now since you've opted into that list.. As joseph7384 said, you'll have to create a new one, turn it off.. wait.. then test.. Once you have a subscriber on the list, you can't change it.

  • but isn't double optin better than single optin?
  • i only use get response because they allow single optin.
  • This has happened to me a few times while I am testing a squeeze page myself and opting in many times from my IP address, it is just a security measure from aWeber, real optins should be fine going forward. It has never been an issue for me.

    All the best
  • This happens when aweber sees multiple requests from the same IP address. I had this problem when testing my aweber forms.

Have a friend fill it out and see if that works. If not, I have one other idea.

EDIT: Sorry, just scrolled down to the bottom and see you got it working!
  • I think it depends on your niche. For me I am doing dog training so I think single works better.

Confirmed Opt-In is a process used to ensure that only people who want to receive your emails are subscribed to your list.
It works by sending new subscribers an initial message asking them to confirm that they want to receive your email. Subscribers confirm by clicking on a link in the email.
If you prefer, you can disable Confirmed Opt-In for people who sign up using a web form that you create and place on your site.
However, we strongly encourage you to use Confirmed Opt-In for your web forms.

That is the message you get when turning it off!

Thanks I never knew about this just did it my self.

  • i've only used double optin for 15 years, because otherwise competitors could maliciously subscribe leads and cause spam complaints/fines

    • I tried creating a new list and I cannot find where there is an ON/OFF on the Confirmed Opt-in Setting.

I want single opt-ins for the purchasers because some are not too savvy about opting-in in my niche.
  • I just sent them an email.

But the screenshot was from their own knowledge base. ugh.
