A little product / ad revenue advice needed

Howdy :-)

I've been in the Internet money making game a while now but never been down the route of ad revenue or affiliate marketing. However, I helped a friend start a website recently, 3 months ago, and now he wants to monetise it. It's gaining 500 website visitors per day and growing fast, gaining 2 bucks per day in adsense, and he has a few clickbank products on there that are NOT selling. Quite simply, it's not exactly a money earner.

So, on the topic of ad revenue, does 2 bucks per day from 500 visitors sound about right?

On the topic of products, and I know this will vary wildly per niche, but would you expect 1 sale per 100 visitors or what for your average product?

A little advice on how to convert, good products to sell and where to get them and average ad revenue would be appreciated.

Cheers

    What's the site about?

I suggest building a list of eager email subscribers. You could be easily signing up 100 per day with that traffic, which is 36500 per year.

Good thinking - no, looking at the site there is no subscribe option. Sending out regular emails to a targeted list is always a good idea. ta, batman,

As for the site subject, I purposely left that out and would rather not mention, sorry, Happy to PM if you are that interested

Well it's difficult to give advice when we don't know what type of site it is!

For sure, however it's not my site, although hosted with me and SEO done by me. I cannot really mention it's link or it's topic.

I'm looking for averages, not specifics, to see if he is falling within what sounds right. 2 bucks per day for 500 highly targeted visitors seems low to me but i'm not used to dealing with web ad revenue.

Edit: Lets say the topic was: "Management skills" that's different enough but similar enough to give an idea without me giving his keywords up.

You should be able to tell us broadly what it's about. eg finance, travel, health etc?
Is it a topic where people spend money?

2 bucks per day is terrible. You could just sell banner space and probably make 10x that, and even that seems low.

Without specifics, it is very difficult to answer that question legitimately. With my own Adsense sites, I target the higher-paying categories and most competitive keywords, I use some very heavily tested and tweaked page design which increases Adsense conversions, and because of that $2.00 per day with 500 uniques would be very, very low for me. For another site, depending on its particular focus, $2.00 per day from 500 uniques might be all that one can expect.

No it's not a topic where people spend money.

      It's more of a resource

On a brighter note, it is a topic where people with money might spend a lot of money on a good product!

Then that should dictate the focus.

Indeed, it's about finding the right product then.

Correct. For Adsense over the long haul, I'd think an eCPM of $30.00 would be reasonable, so at 500 a day it should be pulling at least $15 a day. You could optimize the layout to increase Adsense conversions.

A solid product that converts well could be a lot more lucrative, because as you aptly stated if someone is going to spend money (at least in the "project management" and "management training" niches) they're going to be open to a pretty pricey product.

If the site isn't capturing contacts as yet, I'd recommend building a list with a free report that has a catchy title like "The 7 Dirty Secrets of Project Management" or similar.

Already emailed him about this. A good weekly newsletter will do the site a world of good.

Well specifics, or as close as to them as i want to get are topics such as

      "Management"
      "Management ideas"
      "Management skills"
      "Management books"
      "Management styles"

Based on that list, Adsense revenue isn't likely to be a big part of monetizing the site but it should return considerably more than $2 a day on 500 uniques. However, to really monetize the site, a focus on management TRAINING and PROJECT management are going to be the sweet spots. That's where the money is for the root keyword "management".

Now Steven, I had written you off the other day but seems I may be wrong ;-)

2 bucks a day is it i'm afraid, i'll pm you the site, topic and rankings if you want to take a look. I expect the key is in the right product and obviously 2k a day and not 500 would be good, which it stating the obvious I expect. My main query really is:

          1. you answered. £2 a day is low.
          2. Not answered. What is an average conversion rate per 100 visitors?

#2 is VERY difficult to answer, because it varies wildly. But for comparison's sake, one of my Adsense pages (not then entire site, but a particular set of pages within a broader site) focuses on the pretty competitive keywords "web hosting" and on that site I'm converting visits into Adsense clicks at a rate of close to 20% -- so that's 18-19 clicks out of 100.

But it all depends on how you build the content and the page layout. Both are critical to effective eCPM on Adsense.

Understood: My own website has good conversions but it is very targeted. Form fillers is what we need and we gain average 140 or so per day. From there they need converted and the average is 1 conversion per 30 or so form fillers. The problem here is there is no focus so to speak, yes it is targeted but it is very general and not exactly "click here to buy the DM boots you have always wanted"

I'm liking the idea of getting subscribers in and interested to see how well that works once a DB has been built up.

Cheers for the input Steven, very useful on all points.

No problem. See? I know what I'm talking about and I'm not such a bad guy, even if we did disagree on the semantics of another discussion. Better we should help each other than to be at one another's throats.
