I sold 6,000 copies of a historical fiction novel last year on Amazon's Kindle. I would do it 5-10,000 words, and you could do the "Internet Marketing" niche but its very competitive.

Books aren't judged by the number of words but by their quality. That said, you're probably going to want at least 2000 - 2500 minimum.

From what I understand, IM books don't really sell that well on Kindle unless you do your own promotion and drive traffic directly to it. But if you're doing that you might as well sell it as an ebook on your own.

I know a few members here who does sell IM related books on Kindle, though I'm not sure how well those are selling and what kind of promotion they've done outside of Kindle.

The most important thing is presenting the information and not using less words than is necessary to present the information and not more than are necessary. That is, you don't want to add a bunch of fluff to inflate the word count, nor do you want to omit important information to lower the word count and get done faster.

For fiction (science fiction & fantasy), the SFWA uses these definitions:

      Novel: over 40,000 words
      Novella: 17,500 to 40,000 words
      Novelette: 7,500 to 17,500 words
      Short Story: under 7,500 words

Other genres will vary. Children's books are often in the neighborhood of 16,000 words. Young adult novels are often 50,000 to 60,000 words. Mystery novels are in the 60,000 to 80,000 word range. Some sources don't consider something a novel unless it exceeds 100,000 words.

For nonfiction, the average business nonfiction work clocks in at around 70,000 to 80,000 words. A chapter in a book might be 2,500 to 5,000 words.

First off, yes, you can write books on IM. If you specifically target IM/MMO, I hope you have a thick skin because reviewers can be brutal if the book isn't top notch.

And while the answer to length should be "as many words as it takes and not one more", that's not true for the Kindle marketplace. At 99 cents, you might get away with calling 2,500 words a "book". At the $2.99 to $4.99 level, you'd best be in the 10,000 to 20,000 range unless you have some stellar reason for being shorter.

Another thing that will get you crucified in this space is getting too promotional. The IM space has a pretty good concentration of reviews that say things like "book is just an ad for his big buck coaching program/home study course/membership site" couple with a one-star rating. That will kill your sales.

I have one book that overlaps both the IM and small business segments (the one in my sig). Beyond playing with the cover and description, I've done almost no promotion. That title sells 3-5 books per month, with occasional spikes.

Yes, you and anyone else who wants to can publish a book on Amazon's Kindle, but if you want to write in the internet marketing niche then be advised that it's very competitive, and if your book isn't top notch then you'll very likely receive some negative reviews giving one star, which can adversely affect sales.

I have several books on Kindle, mainly under pen names, in several different niches, but it takes a sustained effort to get noticed and generate a steady stream of sales.

The most important things you need (not necessarily in order) are

    1. Expertise in your subject.
    2. The ability to project yourself as an expert
    3. Faultless grammar and spelling throughout.
    4. Originality - no rehashed content.
    5. Something unique - controversy, wit, an alternative viewpoint, or something similar.
    6. The ability to promote your book effectively once it is published.
    7. A compelling description (i.e. sales page).
    8. An eye-catching ecover.

Got all that? Good, then you're all set. Good luck.
