Vacant domain ... How to make the most out of it?

I have a domain, but I am about 6 months away from having the content (ie membership content) ready.
The title of this thread may have been "misleading", as I do not want to make money off this site in the 6 months, but rather get it ranked well for my future keywords. I do of course want to make money off of it, but in the future, so I dont want to do advertising or anything like that on it.
Make sense?
So, if you were 6 months away from going live, what would you do to make the most out of that domain, so it would serve you better when you went live?
I see the obvious approach of writing some articles, putting them on the site, distributing to article directories, make some videos, backlink ... everything you would do if it was a live site.
But is there any tricks or secrets to make it work better, how to avoid penalties or improve its Page rank within the 6 months?
Thanks, I am not 100% sure of what I am asking lol its just this is my first "serious" stab at making a site really work, my first one was just to get my feet wet, get the basics down!
