Is Alexa rank still worth it ?

I have seen people having 15k Alexa with 200-250 visits per day ( Blogging niche) ofcourse.

There are many tools and programs to dominate Alexa too. A guy with 10k Pageviews daily is having 300k Alexa wherease another guy with 200-300 visits is having 15-20k Alexa.

Alexa is doomed ? :/

P.S - Please excuse me if its in the wrong section.

Well, Alexia undoubtedly measure traffic to your website, but how it track the traffic; there is no certain idea for folks. Different aspects are measured when Alexa is measured for any domain.

It's never been worth it. Alexa rank means almost nothing, but unfortunately marketing executives are so clueless that asinine thing like "dominating Alexa" could be something that someone talks about.

Alexa ranking does have an impact on the traffic, but may not be apparently suitable for the SERP purpose.

Can you please explain this supposed mechanism? I see no way for Alexa ranking to have impact on traffic. They're not a search engine or site that people use. Well, except for vanity reasons.

Alexa ranking is NOT accurate. It counts the visitors with Alexa Toolbar installed... Also... Why do you pay so big attention to Alexa as this value is USELESS!

This question about my poor, useless, pathetic namesake seems to be asked about once a week, at the moment?

For most people, most of the time, it's complete nonsense, in my opinion.

All it really measures is the number of visitors a site gets who have the Alexa Toolbar installed and running in their browser at the time of their visit. And internet marketers are just about the only people who use that.

And even that, it can measure only terribly unreliably and randomly. Which is why it's a complete waste of time. They can't measure any other traffic. The only way to monitor traffic reliably is through a site's server logs.

The last time I looked at my own "Alexa rankings", I checked out two of my sites. One, which is a private blog only really for my rather widespread family and gets almost no traffic at all, had a really low "Alexa ranking", meaning that they think it "gets enormous traffic" (but not according to my server logs!), and the other, which genuinely gets so much traffic, in floods, that I have to have special hosting for it, is apparently nowhere to be seen!

It really is as unreliable as that.

But when you look at what it's actually measuring, that's not a great surprise.

These things are of possible, slight, debatable relevance if you're (i) selling a website to someone who for some reason "believes in it", or (ii) selling advertising space on a website to someone who for some reason believes in it. For anyone else, and any other purposes, I think it's more or less a total waste of time, signifying nothing.

Clarified in these threads, among others ...

Does Alexa give total traffic qty?

      (newb) Is Alexa important?

      How important is Alexa ranking?

      Importance of Alexa.

How do you find the guru sites that are highest ranking in Alexa?

If you're playing with adsense earnings methid then it is not necessary to keep your alexa rank up but if you're going out for sponsored reviews or direct advertisement then it matters a lot as advetisers needs a source where they can find your site will be helpful in targeting customers.. I also agree with your idea that Alexa is somewhat fake kind...

I suppose you're talking about Alexa here. I've heard that they have separate tracking tool that you can install on your site. You know, the same way every other analytics tool works. That's the only way to make Alexa statistics accurate, but if you're really using that part of their offering you should make it clear.

Usually Alexa rank means data gathered via the browser toolbar. It is one of the most inaccurate ways to do visitor tracking.

Please do read the thread, and stop deluding yourself. If your stats are this inaccurate you can't make any valid conclusions about the direction of development and marketing.

Not that I think Alexa rankings are worth anything, but they do use more than just browser plugins for their stats.

    From the horses mouth:

Alexa's traffic estimates are based on data from our global traffic panel, which is a sample of millions of Internet users using one of over 25,000 different browser extensions. In addition, we gather much of our traffic data from direct sources in the form of sites that have chosen to install the Alexa script on their site and certify their metrics. However, site owners can always choose to keep their certified metrics private.

Our global traffic rank is a measure of how a website is doing relative to all other sites on the web over the past 3 months. The rank is calculated using a proprietary methodology that combines a site's estimated average of daily unique visitors and its estimated number of pageviews over the past 3 months. We provide a similar country-specific ranking, which is a measurement of how a website ranks in a particular country relative to other sites over the past month.

Take Alexa ranking as a generic indicator, but not as the end all be all statistics. A better Alexa ranking is just showing that the site has more traffic. This is debatable, of course, but a site with a ranking of under 100k MUST have some kind of traffic going through compared to one that's ranked in the millions.

The amount of traffic a site get doesn't dictate it's worth too. A site that gets 100 visitors a day that converts is worth a lot more than one that gets thousands of visitors a day but rarely converts.

Bottom line: consider Alexa ranking as a general indication, nothing else.

Today i think am gonna be a little bit weird by saying Alexa is not completely useless, it actually holds some value to me.

    1. It tells you your ranking in the world from the gazillions of websites out that. Isn't it accomplishing after a hard job to find out that your website is among the top 5,000 in the world.

It's like Bill Gates, Warren Buffet and the likes checking on forbes to see their ranking in the world's richest. This does not directly bring in the funds but rewarding to know their hard work paid off not only just making money but been on top.

I'm afraid website buyers might be using this basically useless metrics to judge the value of a site.

    2. Alexa kind of offer you an opportunity to quickly spy on where your top competitors are getting their traffic from. Great for people who don't have a clue or want to imitate.

No, it's nearly worthless in SEO. It doesn't directly react to anything you do on your site. It doesn't take backlinks in account. It's got nothing to do with rankings.

Alexa can sort of report trends after the fact but even then it's very unreliable due to fairly small number of users. It's even more pronounced if it's a small site.

Let's put it this way. Of course it is fun to rank in Alexa but a high ranking is not directly co-related to how much revenue a blog generates. It is almost an indication of how often a site is "updated". Get it? We get offline businesses contact us and the first thing we do is check their websites Alexa ranking. So what do the rankings shown in Alexa say. Well as I said it shows how often a website is updated but also how much time has been put into the site over say, 3 months and last but not the least, how authoritative a website really is. Don't lose sleep if your Alexa ranking is bad but if its good brag about it. Why not?

    There's nothing wrong with Alexa.

I use it one a site where I sell direct ads. The numbers are CERTIFIED. This means the counts are accurate since Alexa knows what traffic is hitting the site.

It's easier to sell ads on an Alexa certified site.

Is Alexa rank a reliable metric for traffic measurement - NO.
Does it have any importance - Yes, to some extent.

Let me give an example. Alexa rank of WF is 262 and that of Jvzoo is 671. That indicates WF is more popular than Jvzoo which is true.
