Does anyone use Twitter to advertise their business and if so how well is it working for you? What works best?

I run a graphics business and only after actually having conversations with people on Twitter, did they come back to ask for advice and for work from me.

It pays to take the time to reply to peoples comments so you really need to give, give, and give some more before people will be comfortable looking at your offers.

Plus you need to be serious and entertaining in your comments. Also try to stimulate people to think.

Also it is easier to advertise in the background feature to the left and right of the main comments box and leave the posts for helpful information. When you do this, people will look at your ad in the free space to the left and right of the comments.

So many people don't use the background feature to it's fullest benefit. Just use any free graphics editor to do it with. I've done a few for some customers and it's helped them.

Twitter is great for soft-selling. Focus on building relationships and not on selling people something. That's what seems to work best for me.

Dan's content is irregularly read by handfuls of people. Join the elite few by reading his blog: dcrBlogs.com, following him on Twitter: dcrTweets.com or reading his fiction: dcrWrites.com but NOT by Clicking Here!

Dan also writes content for hire, but you can't afford him anyway.

Twitter is great for a lot of things. Brand building, networking, hard selling. All can be done, but your approach has to be different. Here's an approach I'm using for selling that's a bit more subtle than the spam approach that's being used now: A Plan for "Soft" Marketing on Twitter

Exactly. Twitter is not a direct marketing tool. It's a great way to build relationships with people and in turn they may buy or recommend your products. If you try to sell to people on twitter it won't work. (in a white hat world... some people have made money spamming people on twitter, but that's not for me)

There are many people making a nice income using the Twitter profiling system. I would recommend being very casual and not "over-advertise" if that is something you are looking to try.

Drover, thanks for that link. So, Hard selling gets your acct whacked on Twitter? Is that the ONLY reason to not hard sell or is it just not effective as soft selling. I personally do not have a Twitter acct because I did not know one could really make money on it. During the MySpace early phases I did OK there but I thought Twitter made revisions just like MS so I did not bother. Very interesting to hear that one can still make money on a social site.

Honestly it just depends on what you want to do. I've got accounts doing both at the moment because I've gotten really interested in Twitter and am just trying to work it all out, testing and seeing what works and how well. There are plenty of people spamming the hell out of it and not getting banned. Or just creating new accounts as fast as they get banned. Twitter has just barely started to tighten up, it's still very loose on banning people.

I wouldn't really say whether soft selling or spamming will make you more money there. It's more a matter of preference. Like other forms of Internet marketing, I know people who make a lot of money both ways.

I use it, but not as a steady stream of spamming. At least 10:1 comments to plugs works for me.

I find Twitter fantastic for engagement and getting your name out there. Since I really started going for it in around December i've built up around 6000 followers across 3 accounts and it really works for me.

I've written a couple of articles on Twitter, if you're interested:

I agree with Scrole, Twitter is not a direct marketing tool. You can however build great relationships with your followers and provide useful information and in turn you can generate great leads from your Twitter profile to your products or services.

Twitter can be used as a marketing tool, when you have the right method.
Twittering only affiliate links won't help. Start "sharing" helpful links with people looking for help along with retweeting carefully selected tweets.

This will help you building up relationship. Being helpful can also mean
to help with a direct link to the product that provides the ultimate solution.

I agree with Drover. Having multiple accounts on twitter is best. One for selling purpose only where you want to have many followers waiting for your updates and one for family use and one for customers update etc. Twitter do makes alot of money for internet marketers and I have practically demonstrated this to a seminar recently in Kuala Lumpur

But again, end of the day, you don't want to abuse the system so keep it natrual as much as possible and keep your trust with your followers rather than making their life hard with spam and they start unfollowing you.

  • I have just begun to use Twitter and I am still building a following. Reputable advice I have recieved is to use Twitter in the way it was designed; a SOCIAL network. Build relationships based on who you present yourself to be and provide useful interaction. Posture yourself as an expert or leader and relate to people as they reveal a need. In other words allow the thirsty to seek water. So I'm going to play it cool for a while. Twitter does have potential but I'm not going to use it as a classified ad platform.
