Which file hosting site you use?

Is Megaupload suitable for hosting ebooks, pdf or zip file? I see most of the files are game demo or movie trailers on the 'Top 100' sections.

How about rapidshare, do you think it's good?

Any other good sites to share.

Thanks

I recommend and use Box.net | Simple Online Collaboration: Online File Storage, FTP Replacement, Team Workspaces ~ Free Version and Free File Hosting Made Simple - MediaFire.

In box.net you can set password to access the download, track the no. of downloads, make files public/private etc. Mediafire also has most of these features but limits the file size to 100MB each.

I've been using many file sharing services and below is my review according to the most I use daily:

    Premium:
HOTFILE : The best file sharing service regarding download speed/parallel downloads.
FILESONIC: Having problems with parallel download (always disconnected and you have to manual resume)

    Free:
RAPIDSHARE FREE: Excellent download speed but no parallel downloads
MEDIAFIRE FREE : Excellent download speed but no parallel download

  • I use Rackspace Cloud Files Storage because I don't
want to be associated with Warez downloads and
    piracy.

It's only fifteen cents a month per GB for storage and
eighteen cents a month for bandwidth out (downloading)
    per GB.

Bandwidth in (uploading) is only eight cents a month per GB.

Plus, downloads are blazing fast so your customers
will be tickled pink over that.

You can check it out here

UploadStation: great design, and it always works.

MediaFire would be my #2 pick.

I've been using PEER1 since they were Interland for my dedicated servers.

As Michael said, I don't want my content being associated with warez, piracy or porn. Plus, hosting your files on a third party system is nothing but a disaster waiting to happen. What if they go out of busines, get hacked, run over their bandwidth? then all your stuff is down with them.

Although PEER1 may be a little more pricey than some, their network is 99.9% reliable, you get 24-7 phone support and a dedicated account specialist.

Plus, you can run opt-in mailing lists (if you're not a spammer) and they have a delivery rate comparable to Aweber. They are very quick to nuke spammers, so their network is very trusted.

It's a great place to grow a real professional business but if you don't believe enough in your own product enough to choose and pay for the best, learn the hard way.

Rapidshare is the best. I use the premium account and can get
download speeds upto 6mb/sec. Really fast and cheap.

Think I pay about £6 per month. No problems with speed like
I've found with the other premium file hosting accounts.

MediaFire is the best one out there. No downloading limits for downloaders! Rapidshare really annoys me. Sometimes you have to wait 5 minutes to get my download

There are so many different hosting sites out there. However, I would use Mediafire, because if i remember correctly, there is no countdown to downloads. I find the sites better layed out as well.

I used mediafire a couple of years ago, after exactly 1-year mediafire will delete any files hosted for free.

Bad idea to use mediafire long term, I found out the hard way when they deleted 200+ .zip files that I had hosted on their site.

I think megaupload is the best for hosting because you can set passwords on your downloads (I cant say you cant do the same for rapidshare) and it is the easiest to use for new people who try to download things from you. The download page doesn't have a billion advertisements with random "download" buttons that take you to different pages and prompt you to buy their premium service. From a hosting perspective, rapidshare or megaupload are both good but in my opinion megaupload is better and cleaner for your customers who want to download your files.

A lot of posters mention Mediafire, and that it's free.

One thing to note: a premium account ($9/month) allows you to hotlink your files, which means the person downloading doesn't have to go to the Mediafire download page filled with ads to download the file.

Bottomline: free is great for simple hosting, premium is better for your downloading clients.

It's funny how the context of this old thread has change now that the Megaupload guys are sitting in a New Zealand jail. I guess the answer to the original question is no...Megaupload is not suitable for hosting anything. ;-)

Anyway, I use dropbox and amazon s3.
