How Long Did It Take You To Make Your First $100 Online?

I think that this is a really interesting question because it might show that making money online is not a quick fix solution. Well it wasn't for me.

My first earnings online was with Adsense. I jumped for joyed when I got that first 5 cent click. It took nearly a year to hit the $100 mark.

So How About You - How Long Did It Take?
  • How did you earn that first $100?
  • Are you still earning your online money in this way?
  • Do you have any advice for newbies?

I look forward to your responses.

I earn online as a freelancer. It took me about one month to get my first $100, and after that it was much easier.

I've had numerous $200, $300 days. I would say focus on big priced products because they require just as much effort to sell as small prices products. Also, test a product through PPC before you run a long SEO campaign, time is more valuable than money.

    Alright why not.

Q: How did you earn that first $100?

A: I built a website (a big one) telling people how to do a certain thing they were searching for online. Basically, I found a fairly non competitive niche and built a big website around it. It took me about a month before I earned my first $100 with that site, and I was making about $300-$500 a month with that site within a few months.

Q: Are you still earning your online money in this way
A: In this way? Absolutely, while I don't do much in that niche anymore - I still own the domain and it's nice and aged from 2007 with a google Pr3 now :-)

Q: Do you have any advice for newbies?
A: Build a list - I didn't build one for a few YEARS and realized it's easy to make 3-4 times as much profit by building a list in your niche. I now have lists in MANY niches and make money daily w/o much hands on work for the most part.

To give you an example, I had a youtube channel ranking nicely for a 40k searches per month keyword. I linked DIRECTLY to the affiliate product and made about $500 a week from this one channel. I decided to build a LIST and gave people a (legit) discount on that product (that the product owner had set up already) and was able to increase earnings on that channel to about $2,000 per week. All I did was build a squeeze page and offer the discount, no extra work beyond that was needed.

My first $100 was earned through affiliate marketing. I am still having a lot of
fun and success with it. My main method is e-mail marketing and I would
recommend everyone to use it due to its effectiveness, although many
marketers disbelieve in its power. I have two advices for newbies: when
looking for a product to promote, seek for those who are brand new and
its gravity are ranged from the minimum of 20 to the maximum of 75, and
when building a list of targeted subscribers to promote a product, you need
to make sure that you do not spam your subscribers by sending 3 emails
everyday, but rather one email in one or two days.

For myself, it took until this year to really pick up. I have been trying since I was 18, working at a bank, and seeing people with businesses that really drove me. Saw some small earnings with affiliate video marketing, but the real money came this year when I released my first few products, and creating a list of buyers.

Feels great and pushes me more each day to get out of bed and keep to saying "Carpe Diem" or "Seize The Day"

It can take some of us years to make in with an online business. Part of this is down to choosing the wrong path, not knowing enough about how things work and then just giving up when money isn't made quickly.

I earned my first $100 via blogging. Google adwords paid me for the ads that they placed on my blogs. I really had a lot of subscribers on my blog who were looking for special discount promotions so it's not a wonder why my blog had some serious traffic going on it.

I don't remember exactly how long it took, but I know it took months for me to make my first hundred. It took years to start hitting hundred dollar days. I'm just now getting to where I'm consistently over a hundred every day and have a handful of days per months that are over $500 and some approaching a thousand.

I earned my first hundred writing articles for other people working with a service that paid me $5 to $10 per article. I can't remember the name of the company now, but it was enough to show me there was money to be made. I got tired of being paid pennies per word written and started building websites and writing content for them and made a small amount of money off a large amount of work using Adsense and the Amazon affiliate program. I then spent all that money and then some on the latest and greatest link-building software and spy software before realizing there is no easy button software that's going to do everything for you.

I then started writing books for myself and went on to earn most of my first $50K or so on Kindle books and print books before expanding into other areas. I'm still making money on the Kindle marketplace and am still writing Kindle books, but have started exploring other promising methods of making money online.

The best advice I can give you is to choose a method to start with and learn that method, be it writing Kindle books, building a list and marketing to that list, creating content and selling it or some other form of online marketing. There are a number of legitimate ways to make money online. Don't get caught up by the promises of quick and easy money and expect to hit pitfalls on the way. Also realize that there are some helpful software programs out there, but a lot of the software being marketed to online marketers overpromises and underdelivers. Don't spend a ton on money of the latest and greatest software with all the bells and whistles unless it's something you truly need and will use.

Once you decide what you want to learn, take action. It doesn't have to be a lot of action at first and you don't have to spend a ton of money learning the ropes, but the best way to learn how to make money online is to do it for yourself. There's a ton of great information on here, but stick around places where internet marketers hang out long enough and you'll see so many methods of making money it'll make your head spin. You'll also see a lot of doom and gloom and people claiming every single method of making money online is dead. The best thing I ever did was step away from all of the online forums for a while to learn the ropes on my own.

Wow - it is so great to hear how long it took and how being consistent will increase your profits.

I earned my first hundred writing articles for other people working with a service that paid me $5 to $10 per article. I got tired of being paid pennies per word written and started building websites and writing content for them and made a small amount of money off a large amount of work using Adsense and the Amazon affiliate program.

Providing a service can be a great way to start because you know exactly how much you are going to earn and when you will get that money. Then you can move on to bigger and better things, as you gain experience and confidence.

I then started writing books for myself and went on to earn most of my first $50K or so on Kindle books and print books before expanding into other areas. I'm still making money on the Kindle marketplace and am still writing Kindle books, but have started exploring other promising methods of making money online.
I love how branching out into a new market area has proven to be such a great success for you - congrats.

It can be difficult to stick with something but it can be so worth it in the end.

Also realize that there are some helpful software programs out there, but a lot of the software being marketed to online marketers overpromises and underdelivers. Don't spend a ton on money of the latest and greatest software with all the bells and whistles unless it's something you truly need and will use.
Excellent point - It is so easy to get sucked in by the excellent sales skills of the marketer.

Once you decide what you want to learn, take action. It doesn't have to be a lot of action at first and you don't have to spend a ton of money learning the ropes, but the best way to learn how to make money online is to do it for yourself.

      Thanks for commenting Surlianto.

Affiliate marketing is a great way to start - the easiest and cheapest (free) way is to write articles for web 2.0 properties like Hubpages Squidoo.

They might not be as popular now but they can be a good starting point for the absolute beginner who doesn't have any money to invest.

Thanks again and much success in your business

The first time I made $100 bucks online is through freelance WordPress Design. It took me roughly 6 days. I knew how to do it because I had setup personal websites in the past. Honestly though, my skills weren't really that impressive... but I found out that they didn't need to be.

        My Strategy:

I found local websites in my area by searching Google. I targeted websites that were poorly done and mismanaged.

Next, I would use the email address on the page and send a FREE, detailed report about how the business owner could improve their website. I didn't make any offer... I simply provided value for the owner immediately. My suggestions were specific and quick; just a few rapid fire ways of making the site better (Layout, colour scheme, copy, etc.)

Finally, after just 4 emails, a small owner contacted me with a request to do business (that is a ridiculously high 25% response rate ). I was shocked... not only did he take my suggestions seriously, he also wanted ME to be in charge of making the improvements! He asked a price, and I said $100. I thought that I was way overshooting it... but later I found out that he was saving up for another designer that charged $1500+! Boy... did I kick myself after finding that out.

So, my suggestion for people out there is to leverage a skill that you already possess... and do exactly what I did. First, provide value with no strings attached. After awhile, people might come to appreciate the work you did for them and offer an opportunity. Leave room to be surprised... and don't necessarily chase the money. Instead, chase helping others and the money will come. I'm sure you've heard that saying before!

Remember: I was NOT amazing when it came to WordPress design. I was just more skilled at it than my client... and that's usually all that matters when you are starting out.

The next step for me is to switch over from freelancing to a more marketing-oriented income source. But freelancing is a great first step.

I've got my first $100 for 3 days, when i started flipping website in flippa 3 years ago.. Since i leave flippa, it's hard to me to get my $100 so now i tried to make my own product to sell here.

For newbies? Never give up to find what the best your incomes source fit in.

It took me around one month to earn my first $100 but it was fun. Though it was through a freelance job.

hmmmmm...about 7 years ago, it took me a year to get my first Adsense check, but when I found PPC in the Google Adwords days, I made $700+ in a weekend, then moved to product hijacking and now interviewing and building a list of loyal, trusted subscribers is my heart's desire and passion. There are so MANY ways to "skin the internet cat" that I love calling the Internet my "home." Great thread! Kristie Chiles from Georgia

Wow - that $700 weekend must have felt amazing!!

It is so interesting to hear about all the different methods people have tried. I am glad you have now found your ultimate passion in interviewing and list building . I am working on that at the moment.

It takes a while but I am happy that I have started on that journey of collecting subscribers.

      Thanks for your response

It took me awhile, but it was very shocking when I realized how easy it could have been done had I done something else.

You just need to know what you have to do. Oftentimes, people work too hard in order to make their first $100, but find a model you can follow and stick to it. Consistency is so important.

The hard part if figuring out which model is the right fit for you. For example, lots of people are making bank with Adsense but that just doesn't interest me at all.

Glad you found the right path for you. Congratulations.

      Thanks for commenting

Q: How did you earn that first $100?
A: It took me about two weeks to build a sales funnel (very basic) with only affiliate products. I drove some solo ads at it and with the help of my email auto responder, I made $100 profit by the end of month one.

Q: Are you still earning your online money in this way
A: Yes and no- same sales funnel concept, but now I market my own product.

Q: Do you have any advice for newbies?
Decide what you really want to do online. For example, if you just want to make a few hundred dollars or month or if you want to build a full business. From there, spend time studying what exactly you're getting yourself into.

      Hello Cat, excellent thread.

Mine was a content rich, info & How-To site. I already had the traffic, so when I set up AdSense and affiliate products in a store, my income started immediately. The first $100 was made in the first few days before I knew what I was doing.

This post is for those who have already made their first money.

Read through the forum every day so you learn where to post and how to ask for assistance. If there is a term or acronym you don't understand, go look it up on the 'net.

Pick up a couple of freebies and cheapies to find out what you need to learn. It's hard when you don't even know the questions to ask.

Including the time needed to learn the basic skills, I would say about 2 months. I first worked as a freelance Web Developer and I needed some time to learn to code, and also some time to find my first 3 projects (that`s right, I needed 3 projects to get to 100$). The thing is that I would charge at least 300$ for the same projects now.
In the affiliate marketing domain, I think it took me almost 6 months. The idea is that all domains require a learning curve to master them, but usually the harder it is at the start, the more profitable you will be later on.

    How Long Did It Take?

I'm not 100% sure, but I think I made my first $100 within the first 3 to 6 months or so of starting my first website.

How did you earn that first $100?

    Adsense.

Are you still earning your online money in this way?

Not anymore. Now I sell ebooks.

Do you have any advice for newbies?

Adsense is a good starting point because it's so easy to set up, but it's also much less profitable than selling your own products or affiliate products. Once you have a steady amount of traffic to your website, try adding new monetization methods other than just Adsense.

Wow, ding ding ding! We have a winner.
One of the first Thread "Resurrectioners" whose actual reserrection and what he had to say was legit and had something of value to add.

I guess there is always a first LOL

Thnx coolCrawler. It shows that you can take action with literally a few short steps and see results.
Of course it does not always work out this way, as 25% conversion is remarkable and maybe somewhat lucky. But it shows the potential

I made my first money online years ago with EBAY. I was probably 16 years old and eBay rocked!! I'm 32 now niches are getting harder because there are just that many more people working online.

Back in the day, I would go to Canal street in New York and buy sunglasses for $5 dollars a piece and sell them for $40 on eBay. That was the life - everything was so easy. My strategy was simple > buy low and sell high. The easiest and quickest way to make money online for me has always been just that.

Lately, however; I've been challenging myself into making money online in other ways. I'm very good at selling but I'm challenging myself to become an SEO - rank, earn, and flip sites. I guess we can call that selling too

    Great topic!

It took me about nine months... sort of.
I went from knowing absolutely nothing to launching my own digital product about nine months later, and within two days of launching I'd made my first $100 and never looked back!
