Another "Do you have to do it so you can teach it" thread

Ok...so I wanted to share an example to you regarding the fact that coaches should have had success with what they are teaching.

I think that is only half right.

About 3 years ago I was still involved in Professional Gaming and I was "working" as a gamer for an international team.

One of the head coaches in our team was recognized as one of THE best strategic planner and teacher in the world at that respective game.

When he did an interview with a magazine, at one time the journalist asked "So what made you so famous? What was the biggest success you had with this game as a PLAYER?"...

He answered "None, I was never really a good player, my aim is horrible and I can't focus well in tight situations..."

The journalist was speechless.

So...even tho as a player he was horrible, as a coach he managed to train several teams over the years and they all made it somewhere in the top 10 in the world.

Now, do you think this can be possible for a IM coach? Whats your opinion?

Being a teacher and being a practitioner are two different things. Most people mistake good practitioners with good coaches/teachers. It takes different skill to pass on information and than lead do it right.
So many successful sport figures fail miserably as coaches, and so many great coaches were bad players.
So the answer is that it is very possible and very logic in my opinion.

Another example: I used to play the bagpipes with a local pipe band. The best piper in the band was always made pipe major - leading the pipe corps, choosing tunes, working with the drum major etc...

Problem is, the best piper wasn't necessarily the best people person, so there was always turmoil. To paraphrase, many successful pipers fail miserably at pipe majors, and so many great pipe majors were not the best pipers.

It'd be ideal if a coach had walked the walk, and had the skills to communicate that information too, but without good people skills and the ability to teach what you know, you're not going to get far no matter how good you are.

I don't think I'd hire an IM coach who hadn't made any money though.

I don't think I would either... but on the other hand I also believe that the top earner IMers are not necessarily the best coaches just because they earn the most. Coaching is more than just "showing it while taking a peek over their shoulders".

It's very possible, a coach has different qualities than the people he coaches.

With IM if you have the knowledge and the qualities of a coach you could coach many succesful Internet Entrepreneurs.

Teaching is a skill. Of course you can learn the pedagogical
principles in a classroom but some people are 'born teachers'
because they have the patience and the love of seeing other
    people learn.

I've taught for many years at different levels, from kindergarten
to college so I'm not surprised at the breakthrough that my
coaching clients make and the eureka moments they experience.

To teach and motivate others take more than being able to
perform the skill you are teaching yourself.

I think my practice would be much better if put into coaching rather than my own action levels.

My passions are all levelled with being a teacher but unfortunately I haven't quite found out where to get started.

So I have planned to earn enough and then step aside and teach rater than do.

I didn't ment hiring an IM Coach that hasn't done a dime online...just somebody that isn't that successful using the methods but he is more successful teaching them.

You've confused me because I don't see anyone that has mentioned this either.

All aside I'm sure there are many out there with a lot of succesful strategies under their belt that are just missing a vital element to make it happen faster.
