Get away from GoDaddy.
Hostgator is a reputable web host, and will meet your needs.
And even if they are bit more expensive - pay the money. Having cheapness as your main criterion for hosting will guarantee that you keep having problems.

(And if you have domains registered with GoDaddy, I'd strongly suggest that you move them elsewhere. To somewhere like namecheap.com

No matter which host - permissions are never set automatically. By default the files and folders are not writable on any normal server/host because that would be suicidal.
However, you can easily change the permissions with your FTP client.

I have used hostgator for sometime now and have no complaints

It seems many people are happy with Hostgator. I have always used Startlogic for my hosting needs.

Hostgator and Hostmonster are both good choices, or you can get a reseller account if you want to have a separate control panel for each site you build.

You can join HostGator for a cent here and see if you like them.

I don't know why everyone hates godaddy?

The user interface is quite slow on their site but use filezilla as ftp then it works fine.. never ever had a problem. Plus you get the deluxe hosting option and you can put any amount of domains under the one hosting.

I'm sure hostgator is great.. but not sure why godaddy is so bad?

I switched from GoDaddy to Hostgator 2 yrs ago. So far, I've 7 websites on one Hostgator account and have never contacted their support .

I personally didn't use this site for a coupon, but did get one elsewhere 2 years ago. After the 30 day trial I was sold.

I've tried several hosting companies and Hostgator works best for me. I buy the domains at name cheap then point them to Hostgator. You can buy the baby package for like 3-4 dollars then cancel it if you don't get on with it.

I recommend Hostgator. I use this hosting for all my sites. They have great features and fast support what you cannot find in every hosting company.

All suggesting Gator ..try godaddy too.. best and reliable...

Don't go with bluehost - servers are down too much IMO.

Havent tried HostGator...Mojohost is good though.

I see someone mentioned problems with Mac ftp clients:

Filezilla, Transmit and Fetch should all handle any of your needs to change permissions. Just navigate to file, ctrl-click -> and choose get info - the file permissions are in there.

People say they want good hosting but they don't want to pay for it.

Reseller Hosting - Business Hosting - Joomla Hosting | Rochen Host is a very good host. They host Joomla's website. They cost a bit more... but they are worth it.

The people who keep singing the praises of HostGator have not experienced really good hosting. And I can say this because I do in fact use HostGator as one of my hosts. And there are better hosts... you just have to pony up a few more bucks a month.

I agree with using Hostgator. In addition to a great set of easy to use tolls in the cPanel interface, they have very responsive support. I have never waited more than an hour to have any issues resolved.

Here's my observation:

Hostgator - for newbies with a budget
Hostmonster - cheaper - domains are $10 a pop
BlueHost - Good Support - if you want to talk to a live real person over the phone ASAP.

Sure you can. The only hitch with htaccess is that when it's first created there's a delay of up to an hour to wait for their cache to get refreshed. Annoying but it's not "can't change permalinks".

I do recommend HostGator over GoDaddy though. The advantages of CPanel and Fantastico are great plus. I do still use GoDaddy for about 10 WordPress blogs and dozens of plain HTML/PHP template sites but I won't be adding any new sites there. I mainly keep it around for IP diversity.

I think host gator would work.... Just call them before you sign up and make sure they have every thing you need.

I use Hawk Host and Apt Host and have been pleased with both of them. I use Hawk Host for most of my websites and have been very pleased. The few times I've needed to ask tech support anything, I've gotten a reply to my email within 30 minutes. They don't offer phone support but I haven't needed it.

You can check out hostjury.com for reviews of hosting services. The ever popular Hostgator ranks really well with them as well the ones I mentioned.

i use godaddy mainly, but am branching over to hostgator too. i like the cpanel that comes with hostgator better than the godaddy interface.

the fantastico feature to install WP on hostgator is instant, whereas with godaddy you have to submit the install request and then wait till their server gets around to it.

Hostgator definitely. Have never had any problems and you can always get in contact with their support via live chat on their website 24 hours a day. I love being able to solve problems as soon as they arise. In my opinion, nothing beats Hostgator.

I have used everything from yahoo to go daddy , 31x , yeah been around a while lol.

I tried 3 1x for the great price . They never updated the servers so a first grader could hack my sites .

I really like host gator . Their support walked me through going from shared to reseller to dedicated . That is not easy to do when dealing with a hillbilly that utilizes sub-domains. .

Namecheap+Hostgator is a winning combination.....take a look at how many on this thred think so.....!!!!!

HostGator is good. I use Arvixe, they're a little bit cheaper. These are the only two low-priced companies with very few negative reviews, I did weeks of research.

I've been using a HostGator shared server for about 2 weeks now, and I can say a few quick things:

1. Site Loading is average speed. Not fast or slow. Average.

2. Customer service responds VERY QUICKLY. It's like there is an army of reps just sitting around bored.

3. You can get a dedicated IP address, unlimited sites, and unlimited bandwidth for $15 per month, month-to-month. I chose Host Gator mainly for the dedicated IP address. I don't want to get google slapped for some spammer who happens to be on my server...

4. One click Wordpress install is really simple. I build 10 Wordpress sites at a time, and the WP install time is about 10 mins total.

If you are planning on building a "portfolio of websites", I'd highly suggest Host Gator. However, if you have a site that is projected to get loads of traffic (be honest with yourself here) I would choose Media Temple. They are $20 per month, but it's grid hosting so you're site will not go down with huge traffic spikes.

Combine Media Temple with Amazon S3 and you can take on any amount of traffic imaginable.

Use Host Gator for your secondary sites, and Media Temple for your primary sites.

(Note: Don't cheap out on hosting and go with some random person to save $7 per month. Your entire business rides on it...)

P.S. - I have looked at just about every Registrar out there, and I've settled on Moniker because they have $4 domain privacy and straightforward $8 per domain pricing. No weird gimmicks, 2-year registration pre-fills in the shopping cart, or surprise $10 per year privacy charges like GoDaddy. Plus, they might just treat you like a human being when you call in.

Well, I used to swear by Hostgator right up until recently.

Now I swear I'll never use HostGastor again and I'm in the process of relocating my sites.

What happened to me, I think, is that I had the bad luck of getting stuck on an oversold server.

Too many customers on one shared hosting area.

For about 6 months I was having ongoing downtime. Over and over again.

I'd talk to support and every time I'd get the exact same canned response:

"Our technicians are aware of the problem and are working to resolve it. I have not been given any specific details of the issue so will not be able to advise you further. We apologize for any inconvenience."

I have it memorized so that tells you how many times I heard it.

Highly frustrating.

I was saying for a while I'd have to relocate as they didn't seem able to resolve the issue.

Then the last straw got laid on the camel's back.

One of my sites was doing about 3000 uniques per day.

Mind you I used to have a site on HostGator that was doing 20,000 per day without a hint of trouble.

Got up one morning and without any warning whatsoever HostGator had just blocked access to the darn site!!

The site was completely disabled with an "Access Denied" message where the site used to be.

They cited excessive CPU usage. Mmmm....okay.

So then:

• Why was I not given any forewarning?
• Why was I not asked to look at reducing the CPU load?
• Why was I not given an opportunity to resolve the issue and get the site back online?
• Why was I only offered an upsell to dedicated hosting as the only possible resolution?
• Why was there never any problem when I had a much, much busier site on a different account (and different server obviously).
• Why was there ongoing downtime up until that point?
• Why was I previously told over and over the issue was the server, not my site/s?
• Why was there no apology for the instant severance of access to my site and hence the revenue it was generating?

To my mind the issue was that they had over-sold the particular server I was on, hence the ongoing downtime.

Now if they'd handled it differently I might feel differently.

If they'd given me a chance to resolve the issue, got the site back online THEN said you must upgrade your account to maintain this traffic level...it's extremely likely I would have gone ahead.

But as it stands I can't trust them with my sites.

What if I had just spent a month working towards a big promotion and then Hostgator just spat the dummy without warning?

I'm now switching over to these guys:

Here's what I like about them.

After the site got blocked by HostGator my partner Daz tweeted about it, highly upset.

Within 5 minutes we got a Twitter direct message from them saying if they could help they would, and they'd love to have us with them.

How good's that!

They DON'T pretend to offer unlimited bandwidth etc.

They make a point of saying the don't offer what can't be delivered upon.

You get a clear outline of exactly what capacity your account has so you never get any nasty surprises, like sudden site shutdowns.

I jumped onto live chat and you know who I got to speak to? The CEO & founder. Beautiful - no more canned responses.

I asked if it were possible to easily upgrade from shared hosting to VPS to dedicated hosting.

The answer was YES, without so much as a nameserver change. Upgrade anytime with no service interruption.

So I can shift over to these guys, upgrade to a VPS before some big promos I have coming up, and it's all sweet.

Hostgator did not provide the service that led me to constantly recommend them.

I'll never recommend them ever, ever, ever again.

But if Host Duplex turns out to be as good as I think they'll be, they'll get my recommendation every time.

I've got 5 domains with them so far, and they are absolutely brilliant. Very quick to sort any issues, and don't try and dissuade you if you wish to cancel a chargeable facility. I removed Domain Privacy from 2 of my sites which costs me just under £8 per year, and there was no quibble at all from them... I emailed the request, they actioned it, and in quick time

Facility wise, they seem to have everything. All auto install, just need to head to the cpanel (site control panel - option when logging in), and select the facility you want (Fantastico, Wordpress, phpBB3 etc.)

Cost is about £160 for the first domain (main domain) for 5 years, a 2nd domain totally free, then all subsequent domains are under £8 per year.

Thoroughly recommend them

Above anything else, I would just like to say that I'm one of those ever satisfied clients who use HostGator. I haven't also heard any complaints with my subscribers using this as well so it's highly recommended for an average to advanced Internet Marketer.

Sometimes I just wonder how Hostgator has such strong market position! They rock. I use hostgator for 2 of my shared hosting accounts. They never disappointed me!

And yes honestly Hostgator is a reputable company. They just work in volumes, but they are doing something right if all these people are with them. However, I'm not a fan of their marketing tactics. Try uploading 300GB of data on their unlimited plan and see what happens.

I went to their site and got into a live chat with what turned out to be the founder of the company. Turns out he is located in my town, Iowa City IA. We actually setup a time to meet in person tonight at a local bar. I just got home after a very enlightening and powerful couple of hours of discussion on shop talk about hosting, marketing and business building.

Let me tell you, it is exciting to be able to sit across the table directly from the founder of the business you are thinking of getting involved with that will have a very deep impact on your business stability and growth.

Sam filled me in on his company, how he got started in business and his rather successful prior launches that he ended up selling for quite a chunk of change. In his own right he is very successful business person and is someone, if you ever get the chance to meet you should. He is one smart cookie.

I am wanting to move to a new host and I talked with Sam about how hard it has been to find reliable consistent hosting and we actually talked about this thread a bit and various experiences I have had with competitors and various things some of you have brought up here and in similar threads.

He actually stepped me through his company and how he set it up and how he prepared for growth and designed his company from the customers perspective. Because of his background and previous success he was able to purchase out right the best equipment where many of the competition lease theirs. He talked about how stable his datacenter in chicago is and the support staff he has working for him.
How he trained them and steps he put into place to very quickly grow his staff on demand and get new ones trained and in place very quickly.

Let me say I am extremely impressed by Sam, as an individual and successful business person but also his company as a whole. This guy is definitely someone to watch and keep tabs on and his company is geared for some amazing growth.

My main concerns with hosting is reliability and stability when it comes to traffic surges. As mentioned here in this thread, people have experienced flat out suspension or account closure for just things like this. Sam addressed that issue to me and explained how he developed and planned out his company and the hardware and software he has put into place that make it almost impossible for a heavy trafficed site to go down. The expandability of his service, ON THE FLY, to address high resource intensive sites and processes by pressing a button on their end to expand out to new nodes and cpu's on the fly. This really impressed me and set my mind to ease that as my business grows, no matter what needs I may come up against that Sam has a solution that either reduces the down time if any or eliminates down time all together. It really is amazing the hard work and planning that went into his hosting business. Which by the way is the ONLY thing he does, he breathes, sleeps and eats hosting... He is a machine if you will, when it comes to hosting and really knows how to put a successful company together.

Plus he is a really awesome guy, saying he is nice is a gross understatement. I had check and money in hand to pay the bill and seconds before I got it into the bartenders hand, Sam grabbed it and paid it. Which the bartender smiled at, it was kinda funny actually. LOL

I actually met this guy. literally just hours ago. Indirectly / directly ? through Kezz's recommendation in this thread. Went to the site. A chat box request came on the screen. I thought great, I would like to know about their options and had some concerns.. Few hours later I was sitting across the table from the Founder of the company himself. That's how things work sometimes here. LOL

Founder of hostgator isn't going to come and meet a potential client / customer at a local bar and spend a couple hours of his time to address questions and concerns. I am not saying everyone would get one-on-one face to face time with Sam, just isn't possible. BUT he man's the help support line, ticket system and live chat himself along with his employees and staff.

Like said above, when it comes to support this company has it going on!

I just am totally amazed the freaking founder spent his own time to come meet up at a local bar to talk shop and will be helping migrate my sites over to a really more than decent hosting plan which for the money beats the hell out of anything I have seen in my 18 or so years being online. Which includes when I ran my own hosting, I thought I new a thing or two about hosting. Until I met Sam. Holy crap. LOL

Anyway, you all decide on what hosting company to go with by doing your own research and checking things out. I know specifically what I need in a hosting provider, as well as all of you for your needs and let me tell you if you are on the fence when deciding on what host to go to. Spend a few minutes and go check out Sam's site and get into a Live Chat with a rep from his company, more than likely it will be Sam himself. I am just totally amazed at this guy and what he has put together.

Hostgator or Fatcow would be a good option for you

I give Hostgator another vote - I have used them for years and never had a problem. I know one of my customers had an issue with one of his sites becoming 'unavailable' due to such a high traffic load, however, he contacted Hostgator support who then helped him install a plugin that solved the problem and he had it fixed up within the day. I'd be pretty happy with that!

I know there are some reviews about us on webhostingstuff.com, hostsearch.com, and the webhostingtalk.com forums. While we don't have nearly as many reviews as other companies, you'll be hard pressed to find a bad review.

Kathy, I couldn't agree more with you. It doesn't mean every web host that offers unlimited is bad but there is no such thing as unlimited. It's a marketing tactic plain and simple. If you push it, you will hit a limit.

As for Terry, those are Very generous and kind words. Unexpected. But do know that I sincerely appreciate it.

Hostgator is ok. However, there's better hosts out there if you're willing to dig a little deeper, you might check out webhostingtalk.com.

Well, if you want plain old vanilla hosting using cPanel, then look for hosts that offer cPanel hosting. Hostgator is one. There are thousands of them.

cPanel is software from a third-party company, and it costs the hosting company to offer it.

Outfits like GoDaddy, DreamHost, and others save a TON of money every year by using their own proprietary control panels.

Also, GoDaddy is targeting the 95% of users who don't know squat about hosting, don't care, and will call their Support number for help. Why? Because their Support team is incentivized to up-sell customers! If their SUPPORT staff doesn't meet certain SALES quotas, they get fired. Don't be surprized if their solution to some strange problem is to up-sell you to a VPS hosting solution.

Everything about their web sites are designed to facilitate up-sells. There's no easy way to do anything on their systems without being presented with some kind of up-sell. They make spammers look like pikers, IMHO!

If you're comfortable building YOUR business inside of a system that constantly reminds you it's THEIR business that's making yours work, go for it.

That's like having your landlord constantly pitching you for upgrades to your apartment just because you're living on their property and they can plaster advertising everywhere.

I just am getting started in the IM field, but I use Hostgator.com for my hosting and I have never had a problem with anything from them.

I still use GoDaddy.com as my place for domain names though.

The hosting is important so...
If you see most people recommend you HostGator and..
I recommend it too because I have webhosting at them and the support it's great!
In 3 years I didn't see anything going wrong.
I mean something like server is down, the support is not answering or other things that I would not be agree with it.

I like wordpress hosted with hostgator.

GoDaddy is horrible and they have horrible support staff. The servers are always very slow and the staff don't give you good support. HostGator is better then the other ones but it does have long response time.
