What are your biggest challenges & problems when it comes to outsourcing?

I think for me it's been just getting started and overcoming that first "mental hurdle" that has me thinking it's so complicated.

How about you?

Well, my first challenge was finding a good writer for my budget of $400. That didn't happen, so I upped my budget to $700. After some 60 applications, I thought that wasn't going to happen either, but somehow managed to find one decent writer.

Now that I have a good writer, my biggest challenge is training him so I can get the best work out of him. I actually spend more than half my time training this one guy.

I outsource graphics to Fiverr a lot. Here's a tip: check out many gig providers and find one that delivers quality and delivers it RELIABLY. Since it's only $5 a pop, you can afford to experiment.

The biggest and the most common problem regarding outsourcing is finding the right outsourcer. Period!

Depends. For me, I hire my Indian and Pakistani brothers , and i am able to negotiate a good price without any language barrier.

Hey Snow, It's better to hire a decent writer (such as myself and others in the Warrior for Hire section) who don't need training.

    Hi DanteRomero

The main problems with outsourcing are:

You need to tell them everything in details and test all their work.

They make mistakes which can be very serious especially in website building.

Some may charge a lot of money.

I think you have to be super clear with your instructions no matter where you go?

Yeah, communication complications and keeping things within budget are definitely biggies.

But, I've found I can get around those things once I learned how. Can get used to doing "one shot, one kill" e-mails to avoid the back and forth... and do "test" sites rather than having them work on a live site, then copy it over (or similar for other things).

I think another one, though can be just organizing outsourced workers into a good structure or "machine." Once the systems are in place, they can mostly go on their own with little management, but just gotta get 'em setup first.

    Reliability.

Doesn't seem to matter what country they come from I have this issue.

Not sticking to deadlines, unfinished work, going AWOL.

I actually find that Western employees are the worst. They often feel like they can call the shots and work when they feel like it rather than to my deadlines.

Maybe they don't need the money so much or something.

I've had a few tell me "your work isn't my priority" and "I'll finish it when I have spare time but not sure when that will be".

Conveying exactly what needs done takes time as well. Even with the most detailed instructions, screenshots, examples etc it can take multiple times to nail things.

Yeah, I know what you mean. It's often worthwhile to invest a little extra to find the more experienced people. But it always takes a little sifting to find the right candidate.

I liked the model of starting with someone and then letting them work their way up with you rather than hiring for an expensive job outright.
